Title: Scaling for Yr 11?
Post by: serendip on December 16, 2011, 08:10:20 am
I'm a Year 11 doing a couple of 3/4s, and we don't get told what our scaling would be so I was just wondering if someone else who got the raw scores of 37 in methods and 40 in literature would be able to tell me the scaled scores? Thank you :)

Just a quick thing, your subject scales depending on how it scales next year. So lets say ur 37 methods scales to 42.04 this year, but a 37 methods next year would have scaled to 49 (for some unknown reason :p)

lucky for you, in that case, your methods would be scaled to 49, and not 42.04 :)
I don't know why vtac/vcaa does that.

I don't think it does.

Here's the VTAC source that I'm going by: http://www.vtac.edu.au/pdf/publications/abcofscaling.pdf

Quote from: VTAC ABC of Scaling
Studies are always scaled in the year in which they were undertaken
(this may not necessarily be in the year in which you receive your ATAR)

I'm almost certain that it is, based on the surprising scores of a few of my friends, who were scaled over and under for subjects they did inyear 11.

but yeah looks like we'll need more info from other students on here to be entirely sure D:

My methods score from last year was scaled the same as year 12s from last year with the same study score. Might just be coincidental if scaling was similar for both years.

Scaling seems to have been (slightly) different.

Methods this year, 40 went to 44. Last year, a 40 went to 45.

It makes more sense for it to be scaled in the year that you did it in. Lets say, for instance, you score a 40 raw in methods where everyone doing methods did well in their other subjects, and that year it scaled up to 45. But the next year, the group of people doing methods across the state where duds and did poorly in their other subjects. Then that year, methods would scale down a lot. A 40 raw in the first year is not equivalent to 40 raw in the second, because the entire cohort was weaker in general and it was easier to get a 40 in the second year. Therefore the student who got the 40 in the first year deserves the higher mark, as they most likely would have got a higher raw had they done it in the second year.

^ haha thats true, im basing it on the experiences of quite a few of my friends.

however, knowing vcaa/vtac, what makes most sense isnt always what is done by them :P

Haha this is also true.

However, I'm going to tend heavily towards scaled in the year undertaken, as that VTAC ABC of Scaling guide states it. They also restate the exact same words in the VICTER guide.

If that is the case, I'm not sure what happened with your friends. How much different were the two different scalings from the previous year to the year they got their scaled score? Is it possible that the source their using to compare to is incorrect etc.

If it isn't the case, I have no idea why VTAC would state it so explicitly.

I guess it would be easiest to confirm with someone who did spesh in year 11 last year. I'm not sure how many people actually do spesh in year 11 though. Are there any other subjects that had drastically different scaling? Most subjects seem to have only changed by 1 or 2 points.

edit: I just checked VICTER 2010 to 2014 for the same sentence, and it appeared in all. Because of that, I'm pretty sure that it's not a typo on VTAC's part. If it were a mistake, you would hope that they would pick up on it after publishing it 5 times.
