Post by: brightsky on December 16, 2011, 09:08:28 am
VN 2011 TOP ACHIEVERS LIST

Since I have nothing better to do, I shall be compiling, as I had done last year, a list of all VNers who achieved 40+ in any given VCE subject. Information shall be gathered from: Class of 2011: ATAR and SS ONLY . PM if you have been left out (in which case state your raw study scores) or want your name removed. (I might be a bit slow in replying to the PMs.)

Congratulations to all! Needless to say, thoroughly deserved!

I think the adding back in possibly might be due to multiple moderators updating the post at close to the same time.

Anyway, added in more users - if you were accidentally missed, just post here.

WOW!! Congrats to you totaled! :D

Chinese SL: 43
:( I felt disappointed when I got it (at 6:50am LOL), then happy when I saw the scaling report, and disappointed again when I realised so many others did much better than me. I don't know how I'm supposed to feel, because I didn't study as much as I could've, but then I can't imagine that I would've studied much more even if I could go back and do it again.

But anyway, congrats to everyone else on and off this list, you're all amazing. :)

In year 12:

English: 50

Latin: 47

Not sure about year 11, but those 4 alone would have given him an aggregate of ~210 (enough for 99.95)

There hasn't been a 50 in Latin in at least about seven years. Typically the highest score has been 47 - this year was unusual in that regard.

49, 48 and two 46s.

I'm just not sure there's ever enough people doing the subject these for a 50 to be achieved... Maybe one day!
Title: Re: VN 2011 TOP ACHIEVERS LIST
Post by: paulsterio on December 27, 2011, 09:29:54 pm
You don't just need more people doing it for a 50 to be achieved, you want to increase the standard deviation, this can only really be done by either increasing the number of really really good people who are just remarkably better than the competition (in which case they will get a 50) or increasing the number of really really dud people doing the subject, in which case those with 49s and 48s now will probably end up with a 50, but that also drags down the mean, so reduces scaling

I think the issue is probably that the mean is just way too high, I think the mean is like a 45.00 (from the scaling report)

Chemıstry - Good subject but not requıred for my course
Economıcs - Was a good optıon but the cohort scared me away, too loud, lazy and all the other thıngs a bad class has. Hıghest SS was 29.
Legal - The only class where I can cram trıal papers for other subjects, I only opened the book once thıs whole year, teacher was a jackass also.

It payed off for me , no regrets. :)

As long as you satisfy VCAA criteria - 16 units (8 from unit 1+2, 8 from unit 3+4, including 3 from English [may fail Unit 1 or 2]) - you will still get a certificate for completion of VCE.

If you fail to do so, you won't.

One student at my school missed 1 English SAC, he therefore failed units 3+4 (or just 4?) English and therefore "failed" VCE.

If you satisfy the criteria but get an N for 1 of the other subjects you will not receive a study score for it and hence it will not contribute to your ATAR (AFAIK, could be wrong)

That's correct, you only need to pass three units of English to receive an ATAR.

One student at my school missed 1 English SAC, he therefore failed units 3+4 (or just 4?) English and therefore "failed" VCE.

Are you sure that's right? We had 3 students get 0 for a SAC due to very stupid plagiarism, they all got ATARs and English study scores...

You're only allowed to fail one unit of Year 11 English, you have to pass all two units of Year 12 English, i.e. you have to have Unit 3 and 4 English to get the VCE and receive an ATAR.

Btw, getting 0 for a SAC is different to getting an N, they will still get an S for the Unit, but they will just get 0 for the SAC. Schools would much rather give out zeroes than to give N's...they don't want students to fail because:
1) - It does no good for the student - it's a bad thing
2) - Statistically it makes the school look bad

Are you sure that's right? We had 3 students get 0 for a SAC due to very stupid plagiarism, they all got ATARs and English study scores...

Ouch! Let me guess... the teacher copied a few sentences into google and something came up straight away?

Nah, they copied a VCAA example that was actually written by the Head of English at my school and was also on the school portal. Very stupid.

edit: another give-away is that two of them wrote the same essay for the same teacher -.- fail

Lol, if they're that stupid to do that then I guess they deserved to get zero. Like, I can't deny that if they cheat and have a really intelligent system that's witty and actually amusing then I find it funny (although unacceptable, I would give them credit for putting in the effort to cheat). But LOL! I wonder how they got into MHS if they'd do something as stupid as that! :P

They were actually decent students! Not sure why they needed to cheat in the first place tbh... (it was a context SAC too!)

Same thing happened at our school. Our second SAC (worth 50/200 marks) had one guy cheat by hiding an essay in his pencil case - he got 0 for that SAC. The really sad thing was, he was probably arguably one of our best English Language students in the school. I think he still managed high 30s despite that!

I'm banking on parental pressure to do well in SACs playing a part, especially if he (or the MHS guys too) were curry/asian!

not sure but I think you can fail one unit of English and still get a score for it

Yeah, they actually undertook the SAC but did badly, they still get an S. This guy didn't actually do it so received an N.

In regards to my original post I shall change it to say 3 units English (but must include units 3+4), thanks paul.

Just to clarify, the English requirement to pass VCE and to receive an ATAR is different.

From http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/faqs/vcecurrentstudents.html#H3N10051:

Quote
Regardless of how many units you do altogether, you must satisfactorily complete:

At least three units from the English group listed below:
...
At least one of these units must be at Unit 3 or 4 level. However, VTAC advises that for the calculation of the ATAR, students must satisfactorily complete both Unit 3 and Unit 4 of an English sequence.

From VICTER:
Quote
Eligibility for an ATAR
To qualify for an ATAR a student must:
•    qualify for the VCE
•    achieve study scores in four permissible Unit 3 and 4 VCE studies, including one from the English group

So to receive your VCE, you need to pass 3 units of English (with at least one being Unit 3 or Unit 4).
To receive an ATAR, you need to pass Unit 3 and 4 of English.
