Title: I DESPERATELY NEED ADVICE!! VCE Bio or Psych? Eco or Legal? PLEASE HELP ME OUT!?
Post by: hf123 on December 17, 2011, 06:25:20 pm
Hey all
I'm in the biggest sticky situation!
Ok, so next year I'll be in year 11.
My VCE subjects will be:
-English 1/2
-Methods 1/2
-Chem 1/2
-HHD 1/2
-Eco 3/4 or legal 1/2 (please help me out with that too?!?)
I HATE eco.. I find it soo boring. But I dont know how it'll be for 3/4... Can someone let me know? Also, I think legal sounds really interesting, and everyone I know that does it say that it's soooo interesting

- and either Bio 3/4 or Psych 3/4
With bio and psych, I've already completed bio 1/2, but Idk if I still wanna continue it. I've heard from soooooo many people that psych is much more interesting and easier too. I also find the stuff taught in psych really interesting, but I didnt do 1/2. Can I please have some advice on what will be a better choice?

The bolded stuff is what I need responses to. Thanks :)
Oh, and I don't know what I want to be exactly, but I chose methods and chem for that reason, as prerequisites.

Definitely do legal and psych. By the sounds of it you won't like bio or eco if you continue it. You only do VCE once, you may as well choose things you will actually enjoy! :) Also you don't need 1/2 psych to do well in 3/4, a little extra study over the holidays will prepare you to tackle psych on a level playing field with others who have done it before.

Psy=memorizing

Maybe you should do psy since you think it's intersting.
No point doing the sub you get bored easily and if
that's intersting, you will find it more easier to study with :)

Psych 1/2 has nothing to with 3/4, so you won't be disadvantaged. if you enjoy it more than biology you're better off doing it. there is masses of info you are expected to know, but it's not thati difficult to learn it all. i never spent much time learning the info, i read it once and remembered it, probably because it was fairly interesting.

Hello! I did both - and by all means do BOTH! They're great 'easy' subjects, although make sure you don't put too much pressure on yourself to be perfect in psych especially because it is a competitive subject by nature. Just have fun with them- both enjoyable subjects and not too difficult!

Short and sweet:

Bio > psych (I'm biased)

Legal > eco (a lot of friends got "dogged" by eco this year)

Psych and Legal - because they're way interesting than bio and eco and easier to score in as well, in my opinion :)

I loved bio and hearing from those who did both, bio is more interesting/easier.

As for legal and eco I have no input. :S

You're in year 11 next year, so year 11 in 2012. Which also means you're in year 12 in 2013. I'm pretty sure there won't be midyear exams from 2013 onwards, so I'd be hestitant about picking a subject such as biology, which is purely based on how well you can memorise tiny facts, in the event that midyear exams are scraped and you are forced to remember EVEN more information for your end of year exam :)

i did bio and psych and i found bio much more interesting and exciting and i also gotta higher score in bio. After the first semester in psych i got so bored that I didnt care if i got a lower mark.
psych = remembering LOTS of definitions and theories
bio =understanding concepts and then applying it

But of course this is only my opinion xD

I was about to switch from biol to psych
Thank god I didn't
Biol is really interesting, and I've heard nothing but bad stuff about psych, people saying it's really easy yet at the same time ridiculously boring
I cannot emphasise how boring they thought it was, but seeing as your friends all said it was interesting, it may have just been the way it was taught, but still, something for you to think about
The people who said it was ridiculously easy didn't end up scoring too well though btw

From what I hear, psych involves a lot more memorising, whereas biol involves a certain amount of memorising (much less than psych), but much more understanding and applying, so if you're good with applications, you have the potential to do better at biol

I didn't do 1/2 biol, but everyone in my class who did and said it was a drag, but they all ended up loving units 3 and 4, so I guess you shouldn't base your potential perception of 3/4 biol off of your experiences in units 1 and 2

It is pretty interesting though, definitely not boring, but I guess a lot of that depends on the teacher and atmosphere, just generally the what it was taught to you

Also:
In terms of prerequisites for courses, I think Dentistry at La Trobe requires Biology, but other than that I haven't come across any other courses that want biol (but I heard if you want to go overseas and in some cases interstate biol is required by a fair few - especially in the health science related courses)

Haven't come across any courses that want you to have completed psych
But Chem and methods on their own will be enough to get you entry into most if not all biology/psychology related courses

I've got nothing on Eco V Legal

Quick Summary

Biology - lots of facts to remmeber, and how to apply them
Psychology - lots of DEFINITIONS to remember, rote learning :)
legal - lots and lots and lots of things to remember, sort of psychy in a way.

I haven't done biology but comparing the amount of effort you need in both to achieve the same study score, psychology is 10 fold easier. Psych can have interesting parts and boring parts in the course (like most subjects) but there's definitely a lot of memory work. My cousin did both psychology (during yr 12) and biology (during yr 11) and he obtained a 49 for psych and 46 for bio. That in itself speaks a lot about the level of difficulty between the two. I've never done humanities subjects so can't say anything bout legal or eco. goodluck :)
