I completed my top 50 songs for this year a couple days ago which can be found here: http://joodithandlemonade.tumblr.com/post/14283859791/top-50-2011-reverse-order-countdown
Top 10 songs (reverse order)
10. M83 - Midnight City
9. Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie xx - I’ll Take Care Of U
8. Clams Casino - I’m God
7. Birdy - People Help The People
6. TV On The Radio - Will Do
5. Frank Ocean - Thinking About You
4. The Weeknd - Wicked Games
3. James Blake - The Wilhelm Scream
2. Bon Iver - Minnesota, WI
1. Daughter - Love
2011 was very interesting. I couldn't deny the massive rise and addictive tunes of artists with the likes of Frank Ocean, James Blake and The Weeknd (especially Frank Ocean and The Weeknd as the type of music they produce usually doesn't attract my attention).
I'm currently doing my top 10 albums so will post it up when I'm done.
In the meantime, what is everyone's top 10 albums and top 10 songs for 2011?
Update
Top 10 albums (reverse order)
10. SBTRKT - SBTRKT
9. Cults - Cults
8. Giraffage - Comfort
7. Nicolas Jaar - Space Is Only Noise
6. James Blake - James Blake
5. Bon Iver - Bon Iver
4. Clams Casino - Instrumental Mixtape
3. Frank Ocean - Nostalgia, Ultra Mixtape
2. The Weeknd - House of Balloons Mixtape
1. Daughter - Wild Youth EP
Daughter took out both #1 this year for me (which is a first). Caught me off guard, hooked me in and made me fall in love with it over and over and over again. Can't really explain why.
EDIT
New questions -
Bands/Artists to watch for in 2012?
Albums you're looking forward to in 2012?
-
Albums:
1. Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds
2. Radiohead - The King Of Limbs
3. The Decembersists - The King Is Dead
4. Kasabian - Velociraptor!
5. Foo Fighters - Wasting Light
6. Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues
7. The Living End - The Ending Is Just The Beginning Repeating
8. James Blake - James Blake
9. The Strokes - Angles
10. The Black Keys - El Camino
Songs:
1.Radiohead - The Daily Mail
So the studio version hasn't been officially released yet (will be on the 19th), but they have played it live on a few occasions, and it featured on their "From the Basement" broadcast. When the horns and guitar come in halfway through I just can't help but smile.
2. Noel Gallagher - AKA...Broken Arrow
Just about any song (except for "Dream On") from this album could be placed here, they are all just as good as each other, but the chorus from this song places it just above...
3. Noel Gallagher - AKA... What A Life!
The somewhat repetitive nature of this song and the pounding piano appeal to me greatly. Could listen to this on repeat for ages. Also, Noel has a much better voice than Liam Gallagher (eccentric front man from Oasis) IMO.
4. The Black Keys - Lonely Boy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_426RiwST8 Enough said really.
5. Foo Fighters - Rope
Raw and energetic rock, with Dave Grohl's perfect vocals.
6. Radiohead - Separator
Definitely a song that requires multiple listens for you to hear its true wonder, as it is with most post-OK Computer Radiohead. Great for just sitting back and relaxing.
7. Kasabian - Re-Wired.
Worth a listen just for the strings outro.
8.The Decemberists - Rox In The Box
A heavy folk vibe, with fantastic lyrics.
9. Red Hot Chilli Peppers - The adventures of Rain Dance Maggie
I was interested to see how RHCP would be after John Frusciante's departure. Josh Klinghoffer impressed, and of coarse Flea's bass is epic.
10. Cage The Elephant - Shake Me Down
I didn't particularly like this song at first, but it came to life once I saw some live versions on youtube. The studio version didn't capture the true essence of the song.
I didn't find myself liking much music that came out this year, most of the songs/albums from my lists I expected I would like from past experience with them. Apart from Noel Gallagher, his album absolutely blew me away, and James Blake.
-
Not too sure why but I didn't really get into The Black Keys. I've revisited it twice but maybe I'll do it again as everyone seems to love them.
I did enjoy a few songs from Radiohead's The King Of Limbs but I thought the remixes completed by various artists was heaps better (ie, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4hljPQshAU). Heaps of great artists like Caribou, Four Tet etc were involved.
Kasabian Melbourne gig early next year. I've been thinking of going, the atmosphere will be great!
Did enjoy Fleet Foxes' Helplessness Blues as well
-

If you get the chance you definitely should go. I've seen them twice and both times they were amazing. I'll have to miss their Melbourne gig though, have a school leadership camp :(
EDIT: 100th post :)

Not too sure if you'd like this/is your thing Mao but they played this live at Madison Square Garden a couple of days ago (2 hour long session). It goes alright:

I listened to the live broadcast :P I'm cool like that...
-
james blake self titled was so disappointing. his EP work was so much more exciting.
i can't name a top 10 album list because there's been so many good releases this year
my #1 is nicolas jaar - space is only noise
i also really liked the atlas sound LP too
-
^I'm giving his CMYK EP as per your recommendation: it sounds so different compared to the s/t. Don't really know how I feel about it just yet
-
Adele -21
I think thats enough said. 8)

- Gotye - Somebody That I Used To Know
-
Am I the only one here that's never heard of these songs before :o
-
Am I the only one here that's never heard of these songs before :o
nope, you're not the only one. haven't heard of 90% of the stuff listed.
EDIT: two of my favourite albums of 2011 are 'helplessness blues' by fleet foxes and 'sinners never sleep' by you me at six.
-
Singles in no particular order
Worldwide Choppers - Tech N9ne ft. Yelawolf, Busta Rhymes, Twista, Ceza, JL, U$O, D-Loc & Twisted Insane
Ex'd Up - Culture Shock (Sunny Brown, Lomaticc, Baba Khan)
Levels - Avicii (I promise it was before it got overplayed)
Sun & Moon - Above and Beyond
Trouble on My Mind - Pusha T ft. Tyler the Creator
100% in the Bitch - Porter Robinson
Got Me Wrong - Mantra ft Parvyn Kaur Singh
Otis - Jay Z & Kanye West
We All Try - Frank Ocean
Chammak Challo - Akon ft. Hamsika Iyer
Would do Album's, but probably don't have top 10, my 4 top played are
It's Just Bars - Fraksha
Watch the Throne - Jay Z and Kanye
Culture Shock 2.0 - Culture Shock
All 6's and 7's - Tech N9ne
-
Levels - Avicii (I promise it was before it got overplayed)
I can't stand Levels anymore. I liked it too when it debuted but then Florida or whatever his name is went and ruined it. Now everyone samples the vocals and people shuffle to it?!
Damn mainstream.
-
watch the throne was horrible imo
the beats were average considering how much money was spent on the production and the rhymes were even worse
such a let down, especially after my dark twisted fantasy
-
Yeah unfortunately I have gotten sick of levels by now, but it still makes my top as I loved it for the majority of the year.
Watch the Throne does have some wack beats I feel, but (including Otis) there are some gold tracks in there IMO. I hate a few of the tracks but for me a few make up for it. Namely That's My Bitch, No Church in the Wild, and New Day.

Kasabian Melbourne gig early next year. I've been thinking of going, the atmosphere will be great!
If you get the chance you definitely should go. I've seen them twice and both times they were amazing. I'll have to miss their Melbourne gig though, have a school leadership camp :(
EDIT: 100th post :)
TRANSGRESSION ARE YOU GOING TO KASABIAN ON THE 28TH BECAUSE I WILL BE THERE. SOLOING IT, AND YOU KNOW WHO I AM SO SAY HI IF YOU SEE ME. DOOR 6. GET LOOSE GET LOOSE. /yelling
(I just realised I'm actually seeing them 3 times within 5 days: 2 BDO's and a sideshow)
Oh and I better contribute to this thread. Not sure if I can rank them since I like them each in their own way. Going off what I've personally bothered to listen to last year as well. I know Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Laura Marling made a lot of people's lists but I haven't bothered since I don't expect they're to my musical taste, etc. Anyway on with it:
Arctic Monkeys - Suck It and See
Cage The Elephant - Thank You, Happy Birthday
PJ Harvey – Let England Shake
Explosions in the Sky - Take Care, Take Care, Take Care
Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - (self titled)
Kasabian - Velociraptor!
Battles - Gloss Drop
Lykke Li - Wounded Rhymes
The Kills - Blood Pressures
Thee Oh Sees - Carrion Crawler/The Dream
Other mentions:
Alex Turner - Submarine EP (Do EP's count?)
The Strokes - Angles
Yuck - (self titled)
Tom Waits - Bad As Me
Miles Kane - Colour of the Trap
The Vaccines - What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?
The Grates - Secret Rituals
Foster the People - Torches
As for 2012 upcoming/expected releases. I'll be checking out (not limited to)...
Queens Of The Stone Age
The Mars Volta
Muse
The Hives
The Temper Trap
No Doubt
Band of Skulls
Franz Ferdinand (not sure if releasing or recording)
Uh and are Yeah Yeah Yeahs 2012 or 2013? Nick Zinner's doing his orchestra thing at the Sydney Opera House on the 22nd of January I think so it seems like they're in no hurry.

@Toothpaste
You have a great taste in music. Are you going to BDO? Noel Gallagher + Kasabian + Cage the elephant + The Living End = DROOL. Sadly I can't go due to school leadership camp :'(
Anyone going to Noel's Sideshow on the 31st? I can get a ticket, but will have to solo it.
EDIT: Just noticed that you were going to BDO lol.
2 BDO's and a sideshow
-
BDO is great. 8)

Nice! I'm going to Noelly Noel's Palais show (also solo) and shall be in... ROW A. Brain exploded when I got the ticket. I hope everyone ends up standing because I find seated gigs really awkward especially when I'm going to be right in front of Noel Gallagher yelling out lyrics.
I'm going to BDO in Sydney (won these) and Melbourne so I won't have any clashes. I'll also be able to diversify my schedule to check out lesser known artists. Plus a Kasabian sidey and a Noel Gallagher sidey as mentioned.
The Arctic Monkeys/Miles Kane shows last week were fantastic too. Especially the one at the Palace. Festival Hall was stinky. Here's a picture I took to show how close I was (brag):

2012's going well haha.

Albums (the more well known artists) I'm looking forward to
...
Justin Bieber - Believe
Huh?
Yeasayer have a new album coming out? Awesome! I can never get over 'O.N.E.' I'm listening to it right now
Albums I played over an over again in 2011
Beyonce- 4 (fuck the haters, I think she's amazing. Probs not her best, but still, pretty awesome anyway)
Coldplay- Mylo Xyloto (Princess of China & Paradise <3)
David Guetta- Nothing but the beat (I know, whats wrong with me, but I love 'I can only imagine')
Demi Lovato -Unbroken (LOL. First half was shithole)
Selena Gomez- When the sun goes down (Again LOL)
Ministry of Sound -Sessions Eight
RHCP- I'm With You (Still havent got it, but I heard it. A friend bought me their oral/visual history book for my birthday)
I cant wait until RHCP tours Aus, but I heard tours have been postponed coz Keidis is having foot surgery or something.
I need to get Stronger by Kelly Clarkson.

Oh damn. Haha nah, I haven't spoken to him in ages. It should be fun (and sweaty) regardless.
