Ok, so we've got the minor ATARs and whatnot out of the way, time for GAT results!
Any predictions?
-
Better than at least 70% of the state. That being said, idk how GAT results work.
I just know that MHS is awesome.
-
so what time would you expect it to come for suburbs close to the city?
-
I've always thought it was delivered with your VCE statement in the mail?
-
I've always thought it was delivered with your VCE statement in the mail?
That's what max meant...
Should be later today for you inner-suburb guys :)

edit:

The GAT statement will show a student’s raw score out of:
40 for written communication
35 for mathematics, science and technology
35 for humanities, the arts and social sciences.
Hmm, so three sections. I really am not too sure how I went, GAT was too long ago lol.
-
Gonna guess:
31
32
26
This is so much more important that ATAR guys, get onto it!
-
I just got my results. Better than any of my actual study scores! Comparison of study scores to GAT...
GAT Standardised Scores:
Written communication - 41
Maths/technology/science - 46
Humanities/arts/social sciences - 40
Study scores:
Lit (last year, really didn't try at all) - 24
English - 38
Biology - 34
Food and technology - 37
Australian history - 36
Methods - 21
Yeah, completely hopeless at methods. But apparently good at maths. Methods is what let me down, too. I got the ATAR I needed, 80.05 I have, but the course I REALLY wanted had a 25 prereq for methods. Dx
And, yep, they look to be done pretty similarly to study scores:
Proportion of students on or above:
45 - 2%
40 - 9%
35 - 26%
30 - 53%
25 - 78%
20 - 93%
-
Nice work! :)
-
Haha my GAT scores is a complete joke. Didn't try at all and left like 1 hour early.
Standardized scores
Written Communication 29
Maths/science/technology 33
Humanities/social sciences 31
-
Haha my GAT scores is a complete joke.
Haha, aren't they all?
Yours isn't that bad imo
-
What's considered to be a good score?
-
What's considered to be a good score?
Getting 40+ scaled in all three is pretty good, but to be honest, it doesn't really matter that much :)
-
Written Communication: 36
Mathematics/Science/Technology: 44
Humanities/Arts/Social Sciences: 34
Wow.. i knew i did good in the maths questions but im
shocked at humanities since i literally guessed half of them... :o
-
44 in English, 32 in GAT
44 Methods and 44 Spesh, 35 in GAT
47 in Bus Man, 34 in GAT.
Woops.
-
I actually tried in my GAT and I ended up being disappointed with my results
Written Communication - 28
Mathematics/Science/Technology - 35
Humanities/Arts/Social Sciences - 35
-
Written: 43
Math/sci: 39
Humanities: 34
This has made me even more angry :@
-
Digging out last year's GAT scores to compare...
-
Why has everyone got their results now...? Mine hasn't come :(
-
Why has everyone got their results now...? Mine hasn't come :(
Me either Jane :(. Blaming the postman, ever since they switched the guy everything has been coming a couple of days later than it used to.
-
Whats the purpose of the GAT, did it affect our study scores??
And for the written communication part, would that score be a fair reflection of how we would go in vce english?
-

yeah I'd like to know this too...I would be thrilled with a 36 for english

Neither have mine :( My postman is so unreliable though...comes at different times on different days, sometimes expected mail goes missing...

I got a 38 without trying last year, got a 43 with trying this year, and got 36 in english. Take it as you will, i reckon it is fucking bullshit.
-
Does anybody else's letter smell funny? Mine smells like pepper.
and lol, they give you the option to apply to get a statement of marks for the GAT.

Meh, glad I wasn't sick for english...
-
Woooh! Got mine. I got SO MUCH mail today: VCAA results, VTAC certificate, letter from Monash, vouchers from RACV free2go AND a bracelet that my friend bought me <3.
I did much better than last year:
Written: 49 (37/40)
M/S/T: 50 (35/35)
H/A/SS: 50 (33/35).
The Written communication score just makes me angry I didn't do better in English :( EDIT: Now I REALLY wish I'd been sick for the English exam...would've gotten me a 99.95 :'(
EDIT: These GAT scores are further proof that my brain works well, I just don't work hard enough :( Whoever said genius is 1% what you're born with and 99% hard work (or whatever the saying is) was right.
DOUBLE EDIT: I've also learnt that I would've done pretty well with humanities subjects. I <3 history.

the gat for english doesn't correlate at all for real english scores.
ALthough i didn't try , I ended up with <20 for the written communication part of the GAT.
but i ended up with 49 in english.
YOu can't really use the gat as a measure, although true you probably would have gotten a higher score than 43
-
Written communication - 38
Maths/technology/science - 34
Humanities/arts/social sciences - 48
Definitely stronger on humanities than on maths.
-
@Jdog Nah, I mean, they use the GAT scores for derived examination scores, ie. I would've probably gotten a nice high derived exam score. A 47 in English would get me a 99.95...
-
gr... i'm pretty sure our mailman just doesn't bother rocking up on mondays, was meant to get Bio statement and GAT today, gotten nothing yet
with statements I faxed mine on friday and didn't receive it.
I rang VCAA they said they sent the first batch off today, so we can expect them tommorow maybe :)
-
man, GAT results are stupid. A comparison between my 2010 results and my 2011 results would indicate seemingly random results:
2010 2011
Written Communication 34 50
Maths and Science 41 37
Humanities 50 36
THIS MAKES NO SENSE! My worst score became my best score and my best score became my worst score and none of them are indicative of my study scores. Derp?
-
^ I believe bazza's talking about "statement of results" whereas Jdog is talking about "statement of marks"
-
35 Written - got 44 English
44 Maths/Science - this is actually kinda accurate
36 Hums - what's a humanities subject? ;)
LOL :)
-
41, 44, 36
Two sections same as rohit, i feel special
-
Written Communication - 35
Mathematics/Science/Technology - 50
Humanities/Arts/Social Sciences - 50
...ok. :| Very proud of my English score now haha.
-
Don't who was marking my GAT but they must've been high when they marked my humanities areas, 40? really?
(As in, that's high, not being arrogant and saying it should've been higher :P)
Edit: after 5 attempts my post finally posted, "some posted blah blah blah"
-
Has anyone actually needed to use the GAT for a subject before?
I heard that the derived score is still quite a bit less than if you were to do the subject...
How exactly does it work if you get a 50 in written communication, could you expect 45+ in English as a derived score then?
Any experiences??

Yes. Yes. Yes.
They also take into account SACs, if you performed poorly in SACs then you might not get that high, but if you had A+ SACs then yes.

I believe you are referring to the Multiple Choice marking machine being "high". It must be a Mac.
-
Is it true that the GAT affects Literature directly?
I heard it from a friend :P
It it seems to be true because my friend didn't try, and was expecting 40+++ for Literature and got a lot less, and I was only expecting 38-42 for Lit and got a 44 (but I did really well in written communication gat)...

Had to get a bio derived in 2010 unit 4 exam. GAT results were fortunately high (something like 49 in science), but I beat my derived in the actual exam. they definitely also take into account SACs and they may consider Unit 3 exam results and even teacher opinion (which seems really subjective and unfair since your teacher might just look at your trial exam results to give an appraisal). the reality that it is possible to do better in the actual exam shows that the derived score may not account for your disadvantaged circumstances.
Edit: having trouble with indented quoting (new to this forum, :P), can anyone show me how?

Standardised Scores
Written Communication 40
Mathematicas/Science/Technology 40
Humanities/Arts/Social Sciences 40
So I'm the SAME FOR EVERYTHING! How does that even make sense???? Maths is my strenght and I suck at english.
But top 9% for everything sounds pretty good to me :)
-
Maths/Science etc: 44
Humanities: 28 -> I did four humanities subjects, got 50x2 and 45x2...
Written Communication: 38
-
41/44/38
-
I got an average (well, on this site at least) score for M/S/T and I'm doing 3/4 Physics and Methods next year. :-\ But then again I scored highly on Humanities on the GAT and yet only got 38 in Revs. Perhaps the GAT isn't the best indicator...
-
Written communication - 25/40 = 34, Mathematics/science/technology - 30/35 = 40, Humanities/arts/social sciences - 22/35 = 35. ... seems pretty accurate to me since my writing piece was literally a joke ehehehe ;D
-
going by GAT scores science/maths is my lowest when it's really my best rofl, my essays were the biggest meaningless shortest bullshit i've ever wrote
-
TBH I had fun doing the GAT :) Maybe I'm just weird.
-
So will your teachers have your GAT scores? I kinda moved houses and towns so I can't exactly get my results otherwise.

im telling you now, forget about the gat, it means nothing....
i didn't even get a score for written communication part (it said <20) and ended up getting 49 in english . Noone treats the gat seriously, eg, i walked out as soon as we could, so don't worry about it
-
^ Would they be sent to your old place? Get the people to forward it to you, maybe.

Any ideas what to do if GAT results have no been receieved? Friends around my area have already got theirs but nothing in my mailbox :(
-
Waaaaah. I only got my statement of results.
I really want to see my GAT marks! I got early 40s last year, and I think I did pretty well this year!
I know it didn't account for much... but I still want to see...
Just because, you know. I used a total of 6.5 hours on GATs.

Have to do it next year again! Lame.

This too. Maybe my method of choosing random answers payed off. I'm still quite upset I didn't get a 50 in the written section, my lang. analysis was quality - "In this article, the author aims to persuade the reader. The end." ;)

The GAT is pure bullcrap imo.
I wrote a somewhat proper essay on the first informative piece... and then I made up jokes/was talking about the YS generation and didn't even finish the 2nd essay... 40 standardised score?
WHAT?
-
42, 50, 39
Am so happy with myself... was actually able to finish VCE with a 50 score.
LOL what a joke!

Humanities/Arts/Social Sciences: 30/35
Standardised Score:

Humanities/Arts/Social Sciences: 48
Loving the Humanities score... even though I didn't even do any... x_x (unless you count French)

LOL busted ;P
I only did it because I won at life! VCE the GAT!!! (Seriously, best scores I've gotten for anything all year.)
-
I should've just broken my leg and not done my Chem exam, might've got a higher result lol.
Ummm. Breaking a leg doesn't restrict you from hand-writing?
-
^ pain!

^ pain!
I think that's only valid if you break your leg DURING the exam, in which case, VCAA should probs give you a special award for such an achievement :D

Written Communication = 50
Mathematics/Science/Technology = 44
Humanities/Arts/Social Sciences = 44
Why didn't I just not rock up to my exams? I would've done far better...
-
39 34 29. my written components were a discussion about famous wolves such as in twilight, the three little pigs and little red riding hood followed by in depth analysis on fashion and explaining how rebecca black is a better role model than those in the fashion industry for young girls
-
How do you get your results? Are they mailed to you?
-
31, 17 and 24 which scaled to 41, 27 and 38...
I got a 46 in English and 43 in Legal.. it doesn't match up LOL. :P
-
Written Communication = 26
Mathematics/Science/Technology = 39
Humanities/Arts/Social Sciences = 39
Are those scores "standardised" such that they become the equivalent of study scores for the GAT? If so, can't believe I even got a 26 for written since I wrote like a total of a page if that.. I just wanted to leave. :P

41 written (45 eng)
50 math/science (47 methods 50 further 44 physics)

If the GAT doesn't affect our ATAR, then what does it do? If there are large discrepancies between a Study Score, let's say English, and our GAT results for Written Communication, would VCAA investigate it to see whether the person cheated in English?

No.. The gat can only increase scores.. It cannot make them go down
-
So let's say I get a 45 in English, but only a 20/40 for Written Communication. My study score for English will not go down? Then what's the point of doing the GAT then?

Say if something happens on the day of the exam (Car crash, extremely sick) and you aren't in a position where you can sit it. The GAT as well as your SAC marks and maybe practice essays will be used to derive your exam score. Also I think if you don't do very well in say English however you get 40/40 for Written Comunication they may increase your study score by a few points, it's usually only by a small margin but I guess every little bit helps.
-
So if I do well in my VCE subjects and I sit all my exams, then the GAT is pointless?
-
So if I do well in my VCE subjects and I sit all my exams, then the GAT is pointless?
Pretty much that was the feel from my school anyway. (Like half the kids walked out as soon as they could. But my school isn't very academically strong, so I couldn't tell you if this was the norm or not.) . Anyway it's just like a safety blanket if things fall through, I only tried because I would hate life if I hadn't and something had happened on exam day. Also what else would you be doing for those 2 hours that you didn't stay there for?

well yeah.. you never know if you break a leg on the way to an exam or you suddenly get sick so its like an insurance policy.
it also contributes a little if your study score doesnt match with what the GAT predicts but can only increase it
-
The GAT is also used to scale english when necessary. You'll just never be able to find out if it was.
-
What do you mean? So if I get a 45 English, and I got 20/40 for my Written Communication of the GAT, then my English study score would be scaled down????
-
^They wont get scaled down. Usually the GAT is considered
for a derived score should you, for any reason, UNABLE to finish
your english exam. Then they'd check your GAT scores at english.

Something tells me because of what happened with the English exam, they MIGHT'VE been more used than in previous years, in all honesty.
But we can never know.
You're advised to do the best you can on the GAT just in case. It seems like a waste of time, sure, and if you're the type to completely ignore a plan B when it's handed to you on a silver platter, then it's your choice. They can pretty much do whatever they want when it comes to tie-breaking and scaling, and the GAT isn't as used infrequently as people believe.

If the GAT is used to scale English, would they look at my Written Communication results from my year 11 GAT or year 12? Because I stuffed up my Year 11 GAT, and got 20/40 for my Written Communication, so is my English study score doomed?
-
^Definitely not doomed at all :D
Blitz all your sacs and do awesome on
your english exam next year (A+) will get
you above 40.
The GAT is used in some circumstances,
but they're used very infrequently, and not
as much of a big deal as people think

If they had to use your gat, which they probably didn't, they would use the one relating to the year that you did english. They'd only use this years results for english this year.
-
When I got my English and GAT result, I figured it must have been taken into account.
For the English Exam, I wrote 2 essays, the language analysis I took seriously but for my context 'Whose Reality' piece, I wrote this whacked up story about a chicken, a cow, and myself (as a Year 12 student) as the main characters. In summary, I didn't take it seriously AT ALL, but I ended up with an A, and a study score of 40. My 'written communication' section for the GAT I scored a 48. My situation might have been a bit on the extreme side but I think it's worth it to take the GAT seriously because it can't hurt in the end, and you never know what will happen :)
