Where can i buy cheap, good value whey? Preferably a bricks and mortar store in melbourne. Looking at NOW whey isolate but any stores are fine.
Also what whey do you guys use? What's the best one and why?
Im considering buying for the convenience, i don't wanna bring a jug of egg whites to school to consume after gym XD

From what I've read, Optimum Nutrition is pretty much one of the best brands. Cheapest I've found it is at BPG Supplements (aka Health4U) at 320 Chapel Street - conveniently close to MHS I guess. It's $75 for a 5lb tub. Not sure how it stacks up in terms of gains and whatnot, but I've found that it mixes a lot better than most brands. Don't generally need to drown it in liquid to prevent it from tasting like sand.

I know you weren't being serious, but egg whites are quite inefficient for protein/dollars :P Best to make a meal of it and omelette them.

$75 for 100% Gold standard whey? That's really cheap, I think I've been there before but it was 85. Is it like a really crammed store?
I would go with ON Gold Standard, great value for money and decent protein. I did buy from ASN in richmond, but if shops are selling for $75 I'll definitely shop there.

gold standard is the shizzz!
i stand by it! awesome gains!

Yeh, $75 for gold standard. It's $75 when I went there about a month ago. And yeh, BGP (or BPG, I forget) is basically the MSY of protein. It's ridiculously crammed up and once for me to get out of the store, someone walking in had to backtrack through the entire store and out just to let me out. The walking space there seriously only fits one person, and you're flanked on either side by towers of protein buckets. I think you'd actually die if you knocked something over in there.
-
How much is the 10lb one BTW? I may head down there tomorrow to check it out
-

It's been out of stock most times I've tried to get it so I'm not sure. Give them a call if you want. It's probably worthwhile doing so in case they don't have stock of even the 5lb one, which often occurs. From a quick Googling, their number should be 95291901.
-
yeah rang them up they're out of stock ATM of all ON stuff. I'll ring them back tomorrow to see if they have got it in. Reading some google reviews a few people complained about their customer service being really rude when you ask about prices :S, though i don't really care if it's cheap.
Unless the 10lb is <$130 there's probably no point in me getting it; should see if i can actually keep up my going to gym goal; does this stuff have a long use by date?

10lbs $140 of Gold standard

Use by lasts a long time too, shouldn't expire if you are using it regularly

I personally prefer milk and I also add bananas =P.
edit: Also I use a blender, cbf with shakers.
-
Most protein shakes don't pull off cookies and cream, strawberry, and banana off very well. Probs chocolate is the best to stick with in the future.

I buy unflavoured concentrate from eBay for about a third to half of the price of what you can find in brick and mortar stores. Unflavoured tastes like cardboard the first few times you drink it but you should get used to the taste, I did. There is also cheaper, flavoured concentrate on eBay if you cannot stomach unflavoured. Just search "whey protein concentrate".
The fitness/supplement industry is full of ridiculous and unmeasurable claims and fancy packaging pretty much wherever you look. The cows it comes from and process of extraction of whey is literally the same for every brand of protein on the market and the only differences in final product are what has been added in by the individual company. Protein is protein and the only real differences you can find are between isolate and concentrate, and it would be a waste of money to buy isolate anyway since none of you are dieting down to 5% body fat or have serious cholesterol problems, I presume.
Save your money, avoid the gimmicks, and buy from Ebay.

I use protein direct ( http://www.proteindirect.com.au/ ). They were the cheapest non-dodgy looking place for the kind of sizes i needed (i dont plan to go through bags and bags of the stuff, theres a lot of evidence that says protein supplements either dont do much at all or the boost is kind of minmal, so i half the dose a lot of the time).
Careful of the ebay stuff, you have no idea what it could be loaded with or where it came from. Just sayin' screwing up your body will hurt you more than an extra $20 bucks. Really you have no idea what they could adulterate it with or any impurities in there. Remember, this is concentrated protein, they take the whey or milk or what ever their base is and concentrate it down, this also concentrates down all the other crap in there too...cholesterol (quite high in some proteins from whey for instance), fat, pesticides, heavy metals, ect.
Make sure if they provide labels to check how much protein is actually in the protein. Whatever is in the bag isn't 100% protein.
See:
Even in the natural/unflavoured whey the difference between the amount of powder in a scoop and the amount of protein in that is about 10 grams, thats pretty significant, its a 25% loss roughly, 25% of your money is being spent on filler or whatever other stuff is in there.
32.5g of protein in 41g. (~79%)
No idea why chocolate takes up so much more room than the other flavours but the same principal applies here. In a 5kg bag of flavoured vs unflavoured, there'll always be more protein in the unflavoured one. I still got flavoured but chose vanilla because a) vanilla rocks and b) it had the least difference in protein content between it and the unflavoured variety.
33.1g of protein in 45.5g. (~73%)
So, if one company is cheaper than another, it could be cheaper simply because theres more filler. You can pretty easily divide how much your paying by how many grams of protein are in the actual pack and this is what i did to compare. Its a shame not all companies publish things like this though.
All good with the protein direct stuff though, very cheap, literally melts into the water so you dont need to use a concrete mixer to stir it and no unwanted health impacts.
Here is also a good list - http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/where_to_buy_supplements

Very nice, $70 for 5lbs and 89% protein by weight.
Compared to what I am using now ON gold standard.
$85 for 5lbs and 79% protein.
"100 Percent Whey Gold Standard is made of an exclusive blend of: - Micro filtered Whey Protein Isolates - Ion- Exchange Whey Protein Isolates - Ultra filtered Whey Protein Concentrate - HYDROWHEY Hydrolyzed Whey Peptides."
Also it has 4g of glutamines in each serve ( I know you can buy glutamine supplements on their own).
So worth switching over?
Have you ever tried the natural? I wonder if you add it to water would it just taste like water??
-
To be honest, as i said, im not hard-core about it or anything. I'm mainly an endurance runner rather than a body builder per se, so i dont go bananas over it like some people.
Never tried natural but i don't think it would taste just like water. It still would probably taste like something, what that something is i cant say but i'd wager...vaguely milky? It's basically milk they've distilled down to get the protein out of but i hear it isn't the nicest taste in the world. You could probably stomach it though if you dont be a little girl about it, i've never heard about unflavoured protein being impossible to drink, just not so nice.
For me, i just wanted it nice and conveniently pre-flavoured.
I did a fair amount of research and i think its definitely worth it. Even if it cost slightly *more* i would still by it. As i said, if you're concentrating the protein down, you're concentrating the other shit down as well. 89% to me simply represents less crap and high standards. It also shows integrity to me that they're willing to actually give you this information.
Theres a lot more on my pack, i can snap a couple shots if you feel like you could use them.
Definitely one of the best suppliers i reckon though.
-
Nah it's all good :)
I'll check them out after I'm done with my Gold Standard
-
what's the ON gold standard %?

79% I mentioned it 2 posts above :)

Hey keo ,
What are thoughts on iso 100? It is likely to be my next protein, how is it taste wise and mixability ?
Thanks :)

taiga you're a legend.

It's looking like I might not be able to get an ATARNotes specific discount, but more likely is a discount for another group which I can pass on to you lot :)

Guys just a heads up chemist warehouse is doing pretty well for Whey proteins this week.
Best I saw was 60$ for USN 100% Whey 2kg. Macros are 24/2.8/3 for protein/carbs/fat.
Read reviews before buying.

Ive used honestly maybe 8+ brands and types properly ... meaning for a long period of time
I can say so far i am most happy with vital strength hydroxy ripped or launch from chemist warehouse ... its 50 bucks for a kilo .. but its good stuff.
taste good , mixes great and ive seen results with them.
having said that .. the reality is supplementing dosnt do all that much anyway ... so yeah
as a general statement . i think they are all the same . as long as they have more than 65g protein for every 100g .... dont waste 50 bucks for a couple extra grams... realistically your body wont absorb that much anyway.
supplements are ok .. dont rely on them or expect them to do anything magical.
dbol , sten , anvar , prop , winstrol , clen , synthol .. you may see magical changes ... but i highly dont recommended them.
-
Of course they are anabolics, and you have no idea how your body will react to them.
And is it true once you stop cycling the muscles deflate? Meaning you have to keep cycling to keep up your gains.
-

you have to keep supplementing and keep training to keep you gains anyway lol.
if you think you train and get a good body ... and it lasts forever . your craaaaaaaaazy
i notice loss of gains within a week of no training/no supps.
everyone's different and some people lose faster than others.
I am against anabolic s ... but I also against proteins ( contradictory since im taking one atm ).
I honestly think the individual should spend at least 3-5 months training to get perfect routine and diet untill they supplement.
go complete natural until they plateau .. then start supplementing ..

Bloody hell, A1 are sold out of the Optimum Nutrition 100% Gold Standard Whey Protein.
Anyone know another store I can buy it from ?
I would prefer to buy it straight up and not from a website :) (unless its very cheap :P)
Edit: If anyone is selling theirs give me a PM.
-
5lbs or 10lbs? If 10lbs its cheaper online, $140, supplementden.com. If 5lbs try ASN in richmond, $85 swan street.
Avoid GNC at all costs haha
taiga, how is the discount thing going?
-
Which flavour do you think is best ? :D
-
Which flavour do you think is best ? :D
Personal preference, but ON is known to have shocking strawberry flavor.
If you stick with chocolate/vanilla type shakes it will be alright :)
-
These guys have some awesome supps for really really cheap
Also for the next two days "NOBULLPLEASE" gets you 10% off on anything on their website (No they do not sponsor ATARNotes, but it's a great deal)
http://www.nobullsupplements.com.au
93% is crazy and apparently it tastes decent.
Can also get BCAA's and Glutamine (amongst other things)
-
Wow 93%, that's ridiculous haha

Been hearing a lot of good things about the Dymatize ISO-100.
This website has it for very cheap (5lb for $53) but I don't know if they deliver to Australia or not.

I've heard good things about it too, would love to try it one day.
They probably don't ship to AUS but if they do the P+H would be huge

Ok I just purchased some WPI from nobullsupplements
The promo-code didn't work though unfortunately. I saw some guy on another forum saying he used it yesterday so maybe it ended yesterday.
I got
1kg mango
1kg choc-honeycomb
1kg coffee
Will let you guys know how it goes!
(Yes I know I double posted)
-
Please do :)
-
Ok so my order from nobullsupplements arrived today!!
Packaging is very plain (as you would expect), just a food seal-able bag with label on front and back.
I've only opened up the mango powder at the moment and it's appearance is plain white. On the label is says one serving is 40g (37g of protein) but the scoop provided gives a 30g serve. That's if I line it off horizontally, maybe if I made it a heaped scoop it would become 40g. But I'm planning on only using ~26g servings because I only need about 25g of protein for a serving.
Mix-ability 9/10 Mixes really well, might get a few tiny little clumps but really not that noticeable
Flavour 9.5/10 Wasn't sure what to expect with mango flavored protein but it was actually really decent. I would recommend this flavor to anyone curious. When I mixed with milk it tasted like a mango shake, but when I mixed with water tasted really... watery haha.
Texture 10/10 Goes down really well, no problem there. Didn't feel sick after drinking it either, I felt it was rather light compared to Gold Standard by ON.
Use by date: December 2013. So that's ages
I'm yet to taste other two flavors but I'm sure they will taste great, you guys should definitely get some if your considering protein. Payments and what-not were trouble free. Came in a fish-oil tablet box haha.
Me and my friends are all buying off my account, hopefully we will reach $1000 by this year so we get discounts :)
