Well, it's holidays and I'm really bored and I've been upping my guitar skills lately!!
So anyone else here guitarists as well?
Hmm, I've been thinking about who the best modern fingerstyle guitarists?
-
I've been slacking off heaps in the past year. Need to find a teacher to learn from again. Might even transition to classical so I can learn some Paco de Lucia
-
I like fingerstyle, but not classical, like at the moment i'm trying to transition from playing by tabs to playing by ear, like as in someone can just give me the chords of a song and i can arrange it in my head for both the melody and the bassline, it's more efficient than learning from tabs i guess :D
I'm also thinking of getting an electric, but dunno if I should, right now, I have a Takamine EAN10C-TBS
-
Been playing guitar since I was 6 and got to like Grade 5 but then stopped because PIANO IS SO MUCH MORE AWESOME!
Anyways this kid: http://www.sunghajung.com/
-
Frusciante.
edit: + gabriela from Rodrigo y Gabriela. Check out 'Hanuman'.
-
Haha, do you guys know Tomi Paldanius?! he's awesome as well! :P LOL!
-
Fingerstyle? Andy Mckee. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsD6uEZsIsU
or Tommy Emanuel. I don't play much classical guitar, although some Bach violin concertos are good to play.
And yes Acinod, that kid is amazing haha. In a lot of his earlier videos he looks depressed, but as he got older he seems to enjoy his guitar much more.
Best guitarists in terms of lead guitar: Chris Cheney
However, for overall general awesomeness my favourite guitarists are Matt Bellamy (muse) and Johnny Greenwood (radiohead), for their use of effects.
Oh and Don Ross (acoustic solo) is amazing as well.
What guitars do you guys use? My acoustic is a Maton ECW80C, and electric is a Schecter C-1 classic.

My first guitar was some 10 year old guitar I stole from primary school. No jokes LOL
Then bought some cheap one in Vietnam :P
Finally settled on this Spanish guitar handmade from some fancy wood....
And just bought a yellow ukelele yesterday for $5 WOOT! :D

Tommy Emmanuel is great for fingerstyle stuff, and he's Australian.
Bruce Mathiske is also fantastic, the same sort of style but he's lesser known. I saw him play in Geelong and it was great!
Ricardo Gallen is a classical guitarist whom I say play in melbourne, fantastic player. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZegaLI4M_w
Joe Pass's solo stuff would also be relevant for fingerstyle stuff. When you consider he is improvising most of what he plays, it is quite phenomenal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9VWSFjpuTM
As for other some guitarists....
Guthrie Govan - Fusion
Shawn Lane - Fusion
Al Di Meola - Fusion/World
Bireli Lagrene - Gypsy Jazz - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yfQN8-tVlQ
Pat Martino - Jazz (He had a brain aneurysm in his 30s after already becoming an accomplished player and then had to re-learn how to play, becoming arguably even better than he already was)
They are some of my favourites and just off the top of my head, but it is important to listen to as much different music as possible.

Watch the related videos as well. My god...

I don't play acoustic much myself though

LOL. I'm lucky enough to have lovely friends who bought me a $100-ish uke for my birthday. Lots of fun to play :D

But Tom Morello is amazing :D.

i'm jelly ;)

Al Di Meola - Fusion/World
Absolutely love him. If I were to pick any style I could perfectly mimic, it would be his, especially when he plays on his acoustic

Any of you post on UG here?
-
^ back when I was about 15, but haven't touched my account in ages. I made ~100 posts in total there, compared to >1000 on AN...

I like when he plays his nylon string like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7WQVC1Eiu4
I love that stuff, I bought a Yamaha nylon string because of it. Now I play at a restaurant near where I live. $100 a night ^_^.

It's handy when you know the restaurant owners... honestly if you just get a loop pedal or some backing tracks (I use a loop pedal) then it's quite easy and most restaurant owners would like to have you play, so long as you play music appropriate to the restaurant haha..

lol, I'm imaging some guy set up in a fancy restaurant shredding to a metal backing track now
-
Why not just bring the whole band in? haha you could play some Norwegian Black Metal.
-
Start a 10-man AN band. All of them guitarists
-
What could we be called?
-
Tommy IMO is a true master of fingerpicking guitar
-
no one can top T.E
-
Lol at the Tommy E worship though I can't really fault anyone for that. He is really good.
John Williams is another great guitarist. I should really learn to fingerpick soon, giving up electric

-

-
Did i mention I have his signature ;D ;D ;D ;D
I believe you did, yes.
Did I mention that I've been to a guitar workshop lead by him? An intimate crowd, only ~30 people. He gave me a set of strings ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Did I mention he's my dad?...
-
Did I mention he's my dad?...
Yes, son?
-
Hehe..
Have you seen any videos of him playing with his brother Phil?
They are amazing players and a comedy duo!
-
Jason Becker as a teenager http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87Iz3RHZNDQ
unfortunately he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis when he was 20 and now can't talk, is wheelchair bound and can't play guitar
Also dimebag darrell, buckethead (brian carroll), yngwie malmsteen, michael angelo batio, chris broderick, bumblefoot (ron thal), John Petrucci... and the list goes on
-
* Matthew Bellamy
* Angus Young
* BB King
* Hendrix (had to list anyway)
* Slash
-
If you have Hendrix, you should really have Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler as well
