Title: English Language 3/4 in year 11?
Post by: jmosh002 on January 25, 2012, 08:39:11 am
I am considering doing this just so i have english as a backup the next year if i didn't do well. I haven't done 1/2, and i will also be taking english language through distance ed in year 11 - alongside my other 3/4 subject, maths methods.

Do it, it's a good subject. I did it alongside English in the same year so it's no big deal, the subjects are very different in terms of how you learn the content/skills but helpful for one another nonetheless!

I wouldn't jump straight into it in year 11, especially if you have absolutely no background knowledge.

But that's just what I think from personal experience. I'd recommend you do it in year 12 after unit 1/2 though. But really it's up to you, if you think you're up to it then go kick butt! XD

I would be fine with doing that, but the only problem is that i can't do the the 1/2 for english language, so i would be doing it through distance education and they don't have 1/2 English language. Do you think i should just do normal english 1/2 in year 11 - and then do english language 3/4 in year 12. Do you think that is a better idea?

English Language is fine in year 11. I did it without 1/2 as my 2nd 3/4, and it was used in my primary four as my English subject (and I ended up with 99.95). Seriously, it's fine. Just be prepared to learn the metalangauge.

Yep I did English language without 1/2, picking it up in Year 12 is fine. There are a handful of subjects that are advised that you shouldn't do the 3/4 without the 1/2 such as straight English and accounting (off the top of my head) and your teachers should advise you accordingly. Year 11 English is very important IMO there's a lot of skill based things that you need to master so that you're 'mature' enough for it in year 12, whereas English language is pretty much content-based, not stacks of skills that you need to constantly develop on, with the exception of the essay. In comparison though, 1 essay versus 3 is one way of looking at the two! Hope that helped.

Woo fellow muse admirer? (your 2012 aim haha)

In relation to the actual question here, go for it if you're willing to pick up the metalanguage etc.
