Title: Actuarial Studies - Am I alone?
Post by: acinod on January 27, 2012, 12:39:01 am
I actually know NO ONE who plans to major in Actuarial Studies at Melbourne. I remember going to the info sesh on AAD and although the turn up was alright, a few kids were leaving even when the speaker just told them maths was important (like what did they expect?). I think a lot of my 'cohort' is going to be international students.

All my friends are doing med and I am in this strange world called Actuarial Studies all by myself.

Anyone know anyone else that has also chosen this journey?

A dozen kids from my school will be at UoM BCom, of whom two are planning to major in Actuarial Studies.
The rest are doing either Accounting/Finance or Finance/Economics

The actuarial cohort I know has plenty of local students in it. I wouldn't worry too much, as you'll make friends with the people in your classes.

I'm gonna do the first year for actuarial but i'll be doing the calc2/linear algebra pathway. I'll decide if i want to continue or do finance/eco or finance/accounting at the end of the year.
But yeah there were a lot of ppl at the AAD lecture...

Uh every year you have about 5-6 kids from MHS who plan to go down the actuarial path. It's more common than you think. Besides, first year actuarial is almost exactly the same as every other major so there's no need to stress out yet.

Do the actuaries hang out with the actuaries in uni? Or do the Bcomm hang out with the Bcomm? Or is it totally random? I feel this way too.. If I choose to go the Actuary path, one thing that scares me is the lack of diversity within the course and I'll be with too many international students who don't understand much English... I'm blindly stereotyping, yes... but that's how I feel... unless someone knows better and would care to share their experience.

guys, you're doing the BCom, it's not just actuarial that's filled with asian internationals, it's the entire course....

But seriously it's really not that bad at all, the majority of my close friends that i hang around on a regular basis actually don't even do the Bcom, i count about 5 maybe that do, the rest do everything from science to the JD and are ppl that i met randomly, or met through mutual friends. I really wouldn't stress, i promise you if you're really putting yourself out there and looking for friends, you'll have more than is good for your marks :P Regardless of course or major. Go to uni events. Smile.

Also sidenote: international kids are really not that bad at all, naturally some stick to themselves (i mean how would you feel in another country where english is your second language?) but if you say hi and make an effort they're just as nice as local kids, and definitely nicer than a good few local kids that i know

If you're doing actuarial, it's all internationals all the way down

I know quite a few non-internationals who are doing Actuarial. Bizarrely enough, most of them are Caucasian

Maybe not this year since so many kids got into Monash Med...but at the actuarial lecture I saw 6 MHS kids of which at least half of them I know for sure were there because they cbf getting off their seats after the Economics lecture.

^Isn't that a bit limited to Caulfield uni at Monash? There didn't seem to be many fobs at Clayton.
