Is it just me or does the amount we sleep seem like a major fault in how efficient we are as a species. I know you can argue that we need that much to stay rejuvinated etc. but when you consider that, with ~8hrs of sleep a night, you could lose in excess of 25 years in an unconscious state of nothingness, it seems like a big ol' waste of time. :(
The 'uberman' sleeping pattern seems more efficient, but still.... Imagine how much more you could get done with say, a few hours sleep once a week..or better yet..no sleep at all..!
Vietnamese man who hasn't slept for 38 years: http://www.theepochtimes.com/n2/science/sleep-ngoc-thai-tony-wright-randy-gardner-david-blaine-2855.html (I remember reading that in the time he saved by not sleeping, he built 2 dams and a shed by himself (or something like that))
I think there are drugs to help you rejuvinate well with just 3-4hrs of sleep, like Modafinil or Orexin if I recall their names correctly.
Or maybe we should just take meth. Then when it wears off, take more meth.
Thoughts? Especially med students. I want to eradicate sleep from my life.

Sleep is good! You get to live some wicked fantasies :P The feeling of being in a warm bed when you wake up on a cold and rainy morning and not wanting to get up. <3
-
If we cant sleep how do we get away from the horrors of humanity?
Liek death grief, war etc...
How do we as a species dream?
If we cant sleep, we simply can't be healthy, or find it hard to without the use of extrinsic substances..
If you don't like it tough, thats how we were built. =D..
Yeah.
But aside from that fact, sleeping is commonly another use for hibernation, it was used as a tool for survival, rather opposed to resting the body, if we can't hibernate, then pretty much we can't survive if the conditions aren't right.
Anyways, Im going to bed, to sleep. =D

You get to live some wicked fantasies - take acid.
The feeling of being in a warm bed when you wake up on a cold and rainy morning and not wanting to get up. - you can still lie in bed and whatnot, but you could do something like...learn string theory overnight instead of doing nothing..
Then you wouldn't need to sleep and you just gained 25+ years!

Yeah, it's frustrating that it's so vital. But I can see civilisations in the future looking back at us, laughing and saying
'Wow, they dug up fossil fuels and burnt them, polluted the atmosphere, only lived to 90-100 if they were lucky, and wasted a third of their lives sleeping!'
'Oh, what nonsense!'
'Ha ha ha!... Now, where's my spaceship?...'
ok maybe not exactly like that...but you get the point

I used to sleep like 4 hours a day, but the extra awake time was simply spent procrastinating so...
-
I was actually going to ask my doctor about this, but VN is close enough.
When I sleep at a reasonable hour (~11pm), I can only sleep for about 4-5 hours MAX before waking up and not being able to go back to sleep. When I sleep at a crazy hour (5am+) I can sleep for ~8-12 hours.
WHAT?
Btw. I feel more awake on 4-5 hours sleep than I do on the recommended 8. Anyone else like me?
-
During Year 12, sleep was the only thing I looked forward to every day. I still look forward to it.
Nothing compares to how good sleeping feels.

I'm not an expert but maybe you're waking up at the wrong part of a sleep cycle when you sleep for longer.
-
How do I know when/what is a good time to wake up? :/ Is it different for everyone?
-
Yer I read that we spend 25 years of our lives sleeping in my Psychology textbook.. it was a major WTF moment for me..

Yeah, maybe you're being woken up by light or sounds in the middle of a sleep cycle. As far as I know, sleep cycles are approximately 1 and a half hours, so you could test the theory out.
How do I know when/what is a good time to wake up? :/ Is it different for everyone?
90 minute intervals after going to sleep i.e. 6 hours, 7 and a half hours, 9 hours etc. (I'm pretty sure anyway)
-
YO I DON'T SLEEP CUZ SLEEP IS THE COUSIN OF DEATH
-
if ur all so inclined on using the time spent on sleeping to do productive things,
then find ot how much time you waste on t.v/computer/etc and cut that out and do something productive lol
sleep is pretty awesome, u can no clip and experience new worlds

You won't be able to get those drugs without a prescription, so, that idea is off the table.
Why would you want to anyway? Do you actually have all that much stuff to do you need to sacrifice sleep? If you do you really need to reassess that, if you don't actually need to do all that workload you need to look at how you think. If you have an attitude you need to work constantly, to the point of willingly giving up sleep on a regular basis, that isn't a healthy attitude. Might want to take a peak at the idea of a work/life balance.
These drugs are often used by people who actually need them, narcoleptics and the like. Other times they're used by the military and other civil forces but they actually have a legitimate reason to do that. They don't do it on a constant basis either.
We have to be cautious of extending a specific case to the general. Its (supposedly) true that man didn't sleep for 38 years without any ill effects but what about the other billions of people that don't and can't do that. He might of had some kind of neurological or endocrine condition. Not exactly something to wish for.
I'd imagine there aren't many if any studies on long term sleep deprivation (that's what you're suggesting to do to yourself afterall). People who sleep less than 7 hours a week tend to get more sick and live shorter lifes than those who sleep 7. This is also true for those who sleep more than 8 (supposedly). As far as i remember reading anyway.
Sleep deprivation is really not something you want to do, at all. It messes with your immune system, your brain, your hormones, your skin/complexion, ect.
Also if none of this is true, i think sleep is important just psychologically, to break days apart. Imagine if one day constantly ran into the next one and they all blurred together, i would think it would be quiet horrible. Your mind needs a break really..
Also i remember shift work induced sleep disturbance being listed as a confirmed carcinogen (causes cancer) or a highly suspected carcinogen.
It might seem like a good idea but think about it, if you miss out on sleep to that degree you will (most likely) be tired for most of the day. I remember i did this during a lot of highschool (not that i was working during that time, was just talking to friends and such) and the next day i was absolutely dead tired almost falling asleep in class and when i got home on the desk. Sure, you might gain a couple hours a day by not sleeping as much but its definitely not worth it if you spend the rest of the next day absolutely dead tired and not able to work at efficient levels.
Also sleep is bloody awesome...just sayin'

WORST PART IS WHEN U HAVE TO ACTUALLY GET UP.
-
YEah.
When you wake up and you feel better than you say, sleep 8 hours,
It is because you have screwed up your sleep cycle..
When you wake your supposed to have a refreshed sort of feeling, the groggy feeling is waking up in the cycle of deep sleep, there are supposed to be three apparent, light where you can sort of sense what is going on, moderate is where you are half unconscious/dream state and the final one deep sleep, where you cant hear anything, like seriously the only way you would wake up if there would be a pretty loud noise, someone could pretty much do anything to you and you would not notice, well not anything, well anything to the things around you, if you get my drift. =P. We're suposed to wake up in moderate/light, light is often better, it is this that gives the refreshed theory. the feeling of feeling good. =D
Yeah. But if this happens, itll probably be cbecos of some device out of doctor who or some fantasy thing like that we're everyone would have the same thing, and people would be bored out of their minds...
Btw, I was going to ask, is drugs your answer for everything?
Not all drugs are available broo?
You said meth, so to stay up more, you would prefer to end up stoned than be productive during the day, that counteracts what you actually want...
The military does things like this, but not to have a fully awake soldier. There are drugs for an injured soldier to get through, back to base etc, things like Super Stim- packs which have low feedback afterewards, or SuperJuice, i think was the unknown name for it, I dont know the real name, are items that would help you stay awake, they basically keep you awake and make you stronger, faster and better, until they wear off and you can get off to help....
Sleep deprivation is really not something you want to do, at all. It messes with your immune system, your brain, your hormones, your skin/complexion, ect.
Also, this is correct. =D..
IF your brain and immune are out of order, simple, you die...
More easy for you to get disease?
Would you prefer to be awake more than to die young>?
To live life to the fullest LITERALLY and pay the price?
o.0.
The only way it would happen would be, idk, some sort of soundwave, I assume to prevent the brain from getting headaches,
THere are such programs on the iphone, that use a specific soundwave to calm the mind, it does work, a friend of mine uses it, it sort of acts like a cure, in some circumastances..
And finally
Also sleep is bloody awesome...just sayin'
True that. =D
-
If your having trouble with wanting to stay up so that you can do productive things, don't sacrifice sleep. Try listening to Alpha wave music. I've heard something called superlearning baroque music at 60 beats/minute or 1 beat/second.
-
Okay everything that's been said is valid and correct, but what I wrote was not meant to sound so specific to just my own needs. I mean, on a general scale, what if no one really slept much anymore... I know how important sleep is to our well-being as of now, but what if we could find a way for so much sleep to not be necessary?(with no side-effects)
And I'm just joking about taking meth/acid. I'm sure we all understand how silly that is.
-
If there was a way to get rid of sleeping, or decrease down to an hour without any negative side-effects, that would be so good. Would be able to do so much more with your life
-
Are you just complaining because you feel you don't have enough time to study
? Bahahaha
-
Haha I have ample time to study.
But, just imagine all the things you could do with an extra 25 years in your life......
-
Nah sleeping is necessary.
-
I wouldn't give it up lol.
-
What if you could give it up with no side-effects..?
-
Ye sure, would love a free 25 extra years to play dota
-
I barely get any sleep
Bogan neighbours keep playing dubstep >.<.
-
If it gave no side-effects that would be frigging epic.. would probably spent that time playing games
-
Sleeping is so good, and you get to experience all of these bizarre dreams :)
-
Sleep doesn't suck, needing sleep sucks. I had insomnia since year nine and although it was abating during VCE, not sleeping made me feel horrible and made studying even worse. My time not sleeping was spent worrying, trying to sleep, marinating in frustration etc etc. Didn't make my days feel all that great either. And yes although your output would increase with all the time you save by not sleeping, all the negative side-effects would catch up with you and fuck everything up so productivity drops to a low anyway. On the upside, all the accumulation of angst involving sleep was a great theme for my studio arts folio work. :)
-
Yeah that makes sense and I'm sorry you had/have to endure that, but what I'm saying isn't just try and pull an all-nighter every night, but rather eradicating the physical need for sleep in the first place.
Short term it may seem pointless, but in the long term, you could potentially gain 25 years or more. It wouldn't even be like adding 25 years to the end of your life, when you are old and frail, it would be entwined in the entirety of your life.
Also, I guess there is an argument that we wouldn't be able to handle not sleeping, but that would be because we are so used to it, and getting rid of it would force a huge change in the dynamics of our lives. Imagine being told that you don't need to breathe any more, but still lived a similar, healthy life, only now you could swim underwater indefinitely... People would be very resistant to a change like that, and not having to sleep would be similar.
-

Yes I suppose we've never experienced a kind of life completely without sleep. I read an interesting article (come to think of it, I think it was on Tumblr haha) about a couple of people who were cooped up in a space without windows/any indication of time and they ended up not sleeping for a very long period of time yet were doings lots of things and being productive. Anyway, the message was 'time doesn't exist, the clock does' or something heavily abstracted. You should definitely look into it, though it may stray away from this topic of sleep but it's an interesting philosophy. Personally, I'm sceptical about it. And I agree with you, having 25 years of time opened up into our lives would be extremely useful, despite logistics such as shops and libraries being closed, can't see in the dark (though I guess you could train yourself) and all that jazz.
-
If I sleep for 5-6 hours one night, the next night I find myself sleeping for atleast 10. So I guess the routine of sleep at 11:30, waking up at 7:30 is good to get into now.
-

I don't know, if it were still day then maybe.
