Title: Dress
Post by: s.ay on February 04, 2012, 04:48:55 pm
Yes, I need a formal dress. Sorry for such a petty subject matter, but would anyone be able to recommend a brand/shop/website? I wish to find a dress that is not conventional, if there is such a thing haha. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks :)

More information is required. Price range? Event? Look you want? :)

Ah good point there! Um short but not too short, definitely under the $200 mark, something slightly vintage/ not something easy to find really haha.

Don't go to forever new, cause it's almost certain that you'll end up with the same dress as someone else :P (a lot of people go there)

Try to go to Bridge Road in Richmond, they have really good dress shops like Christopher Ari

Seduce has really good dresses, but nothing too 'unconventional'
or you could always try online depending on how far away your formal is :) websites like asos are pretty reliable

Bariano is definitely a good place to go, the only thing is there is a chance that someone might end up with the same dress as you. (On a side note, it doesnt really matter if someone wears the same dress, its a bit awkward if anything. I suppose going to a girls school, it definitely caused some controversy though)  Some of my friends got some nice dresses from there. Definitely try Chapel Street and Bridge Road, if your in that price range. I looked online, there are some really good American designers like Tony Bowls, Sherri Hill and Jovani, but their dresses cost around 400-500 mark. They are reliable, and worth it I suppose. I was really really cheap and took a Sherri Hill design that I liked and got it made for less than 100 dollars when it costs about 400 online. Be carefull with some of those Asian sites with cheap dresses that have copies of the American versions. I found which which was selling the dress that I wanted for about 120 dollars, but I emailed them several times and they had no idea what I was talking about and sorta werent really professional in their correspondence with me. Two of my friends bought dresses from such sites, one of them got her looking kinda different from the picture that was shown and was too big, the other friend didnt get hers at all. She sent them an email about a month before the formal, just to see the status of her dress, turns out they couldnt make her the dress, but had conveniently forgotten to tell my friend about it. My friend got the dress she wanted made by the same person I did. But even then, both our dresses didnt exactly look like the designer versions they were based on. We found it hard to find the same sort of material etc.

Anywho, what sort of dress are you looking for? Floor length? Cocktail dress? One shouldered? Colour? LOL I was a bit of a turd, got a Pink dress. If you want something 'extravagant' you could go Gasp, try the Chadstone one. Or alternatively, there is a shop called Vivid which sells the same sort of dresses. And I may have been mistaken, but I'm pretty sure there is a Bariano in Chadstone. K, just go Chadstone LOL

@kazdawg: who did you go to to get your dress made??
Title: Re: Dress
Post by: ShortBlackChick on February 04, 2012, 08:15:41 pm
Yeah that happened to 3 different dresses at mine. The first 'double dress issue' had the two people find out before, apparently one of the girls was really upset, but they decided it didnt matter. The second issue- it was decided that the person who bought the dress first got to keep it, but the other girl had conveniently lost the receipt to the $300 dress. The third one involved my friend, but they didnt realise until at the formal, and were totally ok with it :)

LOL Umm I got it made by a curry person I knew who usually makes blouses for Sari's LOL She did a good job on it though. But My dress had a removable asymmetric skirt, and the length of my skirt at the back was a bit too short so yeah, I suppose I wasnt too happy with that. A couple of other people I know went to professional dressmakers, I would recommend that.

If you're into sort of a vintage-y style (god, it kills me to say that...goddamn hipsters) then you could try Miss Patina. They've got a pretty small range of formal dresses (like, very very small), but I doubt that many people know of them, so it's improbable that someone else will show up in the same dress. Also, FREE SHIPPING!

Or you can be really hk and like, get a legit vintage dress, except that they're usually 80s taffeta nightmares. So actually, for the good of the universe, please don't.

Our formal was in late November, the night after the last exam, because the committee screwed everything over and realized we didn't have enough funds a few months into the whole planning process, so we had to postpone and spent the rest of the year doing bake sales and stuff. :P It worked wonderfully though.

Props to whoever mentioned Bariano on Bridge Road - they have relatively good quality dresses there and basically have stuff for different styles and body shape. Another area other than Bridge Road + Chapel Street I'd recommend is Sydney Road in Brunswick (easiest way from the city is to ride up the 19 tram pass Melbourne Uni). They have quite a fair few shops that stock unconventional fashion. I got a really lovely secondhand dress and it was only for $30. Also, there's a MASSIVE boutique that sells shitloads of formal dresses ($200-600) from all kinds of different designers. Not sure about the details as it's been a long time but if you have time to browse around the entire Sydney Road then you'll see it.

Good luck!

For the love of God don't buy a dress from GASP, they're horrendous. As for Bariano, chances are someone else at your formal will have the same dress as you. Go for a walk down Bridge Rd, there's this really nice formal dress store called Cocktail, where myself and a friend got our dresses. There are some other stores along there worth checking out too.

Post by: Stick on February 06, 2012, 08:14:21 pm
I know there's a lot of expensive stores, but do have a wander around High St Armadale, as well as Malvern and Toorak Roads. There are a lot of nice clothes and you may find a bargain! It might also be worth checking out Mailing Road in Canterbury (although the street itself is just weird :S).
Title: Re: Dress
Post by: xdecay on February 07, 2012, 01:35:48 am
Honestly I wouldn't worry about getting the same dress as someone else. There are so many options and there will be many people at one formal, and with extra things like accessories, how you do your hair and make up - if you play it well you're going to look uniquely you (sounds INCREDIBLY douchey but I have no other way to put it). If you find a great dress that you really love and is within your budget even if it's from a conventional place like Bariano, just ensure that you work it well that you're gonna rock it so much harder than any potential outfit twin. :)

+1 xdecay, it shouldn't matter if you end up with the same as someone else, as there is so many different things you can do otherwise now days.

(this feels weird posting this) I will now slowly back away from this thread.

Please don't wear short dresses to your formal. Most girls make that mistake and realize that they will wear the same type of thing to average clubbing events later on.

On a side note, been to five formals in my time, can only remember what one of my dates was wearing.
Title: Re: Dress
Post by: appianway on February 07, 2012, 05:29:58 am
I think short dresses are fine, so long as they're not TOO short. I guess the length of the dress really depends on how much dancing you're going to be doing - I had the freshman masquerade ball the other night, and because it was mostly a dance party (even though we had a mocktail reception earlier) most people wore dresses that came above the knee. If your dress is too long, you WON'T be able to dance. Although at the MHS formal when I went most people wore long dresses...

Title: Re: Dress
Post by: taiga on February 07, 2012, 11:47:09 am
Let's be honest, Uni Balls will never match the excitement and anticipation which school formals had. People wear short dresses to them because, 1. you get sloshed, 2. it's a glorified clubbing night, and 3. you go clubbing afterwards.
Title: Re: Dress
Post by: ShortBlackChick on February 07, 2012, 01:35:15 pm
Some people (like myself) are short, and cant really pull off a long, elegant dress, because it makes us look like an oompa loompa in a long dress. Thats why I thought I'd be a bit unconventional (well a year ago, it was- I CLAIM THAT TREND) and pick a asymmetrical dress. It was short at the front and long at the back and various shades of pink LOL

Anywho my point is, the type of dress you pick does depend on your body shape. But I really envy tall people who can look good in long dresses AND cocktail dresses, while I'm stuck with knee-ish length dresses that keep me from looking like a douche.
