Title: Textbooks
Post by: Mech on February 09, 2012, 08:05:41 pm
Hey guys! I was wondering how I find out what textbooks I need for uni. I did the "Admin" tab and "My Booklist" in the student portal, but when I search my subjects it does not give me any list of books and errors.

Is anyone else having this trouble? Is there an alternative method of finding out my booklist?

Most/a lot of Arts subjects (especially philosophy subjects) involve using a reader rather than any textbooks. Information regarding its purchase will be conveyed to you during the first lecture, I would imagine. They're usually about $20-$30 from the Uni bookshop, and are just a collection of excerpts from different texts :)

Often in the handbook page for the subject, some co-ordinators may reference the prescribed/recommended textbook. Otherwise, just wait for the 1st introductory lecturer and they will tell you then. You won't need your text book for the 1st week.

Maybe post the subjects you're doing on here and some of us can help you find out what book to get?

Thanks, Aurelian :-) I should not worry too much then? ;o

Thanks for that, Peedles! It seems like I do not need them now, but I sort of wanted to see if I could get them online.

Here are the subjects I am doing:

They look like they'll all have readers that you'll have to get in O Week.

Yeah, Handbook says mostly readers, but there are a few textbooks in there as well as "recommended".

I have a $2000 "recommended" booklist this year...guess how many I'll be buying :P

Recommended textbooks are generally "this will help explain something if you don't get it in lecture" not "this is critical to understand the core material"

That's insane! A few of them look interesting and I might just purchase them out of interest. Whereabouts do I buy the readers during O-Week?

Bookshop, which is next to the library. It'll be super busy though, try to get in early one morning

I thought there were a couple of bookshops on campus or am I imagining things? But, I think I know where you are talking. Thanks! Also, I think I will get up early one morn and head over to campus to beat the rush.  ;D
