Title: Jezza's 3/4 Question Thread
Post by: Jezza on February 21, 2012, 11:22:56 am
I may as well start a thread for it as I will have many questions that I will to need to ask in time.

This is probably a really stupid question but I'll ask it anyway.

What is the basic formula for an amino acid molecule?

The textbook hasn't made it very clear to see what it is.

From what I recall you don't have to know the formula for an amino acid, but you should probably check.

It has an amino group on one side NH2, a central alpha carbon C-H, a carboxyl group on the other side COOH, and an R group.

So it's like:
http://www.protocolsupplements.com/Sports-Performance-Supplements/category/master-amino-acid-pattern-master-amino-pattern/amino-acid-supplements-master-amino-acid-pattern/

But the H and R group could be switched around when drawing it.

and the R group is where it can change to different amino acid.

Awesome diagrams and summaries. This makes perfect sense now.  :)

Thanks for this Wazzup

I just had my first sac today, but I feel like I didn't do very well in it.

Will it impact on my study score that much? :(

Yeah same here, I didn't really hv the technique to answer the question, the questions are very doggy, probably because my first ever sac and how's your sac? Well, if you aim for like 45+, you have to be very serious for every sac even though they might contribute not much to the score...

EDIT: you are aiming for 30+, so it will be fine.

I felt like I overstudied when I entered the room. I went blank on basic concepts which I later realised when I looked back on it. I know I could have done seriously better. I didn't do any year 12 subjects in year 11 and this was only my 3rd sac for the year in all subjects. I feel like that when covering the topic for the sac, we didn't cover it all compared to other all topics that we looked at in real detail.

I just hope it doesn't affect my mark too much.

Jezza don't worry mate. I'm sure you done great, don't let the stress get to you, because sometimes even though you might have done excellent you could still have doubts. Even if you didn't do so well, this is your first SAC and there are plenty more marks to gain in the future just work hard, be consistent and never give up even if you done rubbish (which you obviously didn't).

Ohh do you memorize all of them cos it doesn't work when you're panic, the best way is you understand it.
Ohh I hvn done a sac before so I dont really know how  is it..but it semms alright to me, I think I can get around 18-20 out of 25.

Yeah it wont affect your marks too much..

Thanks mate, I won't worry too much about it as it only makes up 3% of the study score. I can redeem myself next week as I have another bio sac coming up next Wednesday.

What do you mean by next week you're having another bio sac? Redo the exam? or you doing enzymes sac?
and does it make up 3% of your study score? I thought it's 34% for sac and Unit 3+4 for 66%.....

The enzymes sac

Overall the 8 sacs make up 33%, but one sac would only be 4% or something.

Your enzymes sac is next week?? how can that be because my next sac is 26 or 27  March..
Yeah you're right so I don't have to worry that much too :)

Yeah it's next week. It's quick that we have another one already. At least you have time.

How would you approach studying for bio sacs? I feel like the technique I had did not work.

Wow, have you studied chapter 3 already? I didn't know that some school are having sac 2 after the first sac that quick..
Ohh yeah do you have a tutor?

The way I study Bio is read a few pages ahead before the teacher teaches the topics so I know what's on top of my head, and while the teacher talks(my teacher talks damn a lot which bored me easily), I just down some notes quickly and rewrite it during recess..At home, I just summarise the Nelson book, NoB, Biozone, A+ together so my summaries contain more than what the textbook tells and read the textbook a few more times over the following week, and do the NoB quick check questions and some useful review questions because I found it to be really useful. If I think that myself is alright to do some questions, then I will do the ones from checkpoints, A+ and possibly some chapter test exam paper... after this you will find that you have consolidate your knowledge and you wont forget it easily! and remember that you always have to read through  the key terms/definitions again and again...I always memorize them because I can't really understand them.. BUT MAKE SURE UNDERSTAND YOUR WORK AND WHAT YOU'RE DOING.

Thanks for the advice on study tips mate. I'll try that from now on.

No, we actually haven't started chapter 3 which bemuses me somewhat. The teacher says we will cover it this week, but she barely covered the content for the first sac.

We are still covering chapter 2 but going really fast unfortunately.

No worries, we are in the same boat.haha :) .happy to contribute any good ways to study bio because my friend did this before and he said it's very useful... Ohh that's what amuses me now, if you're having a sac next week based on chapter 3(most likely more on enzymes), then why you hvn't even start that..well, it seems that your teacher is not doing very well, chapter 2 has to be taught before the first sac so the students know the contents...you might need to get help from other bio teacher from your school..I guess chapter 3 takes like 3 weeks to complete given that I got 5 periods of bio a week only(3hrs45mins)

I know and that's why having it next week is outrageous, but I'll cope with it somehow.

Yeah there's only one more bio teacher in our school, but he's not teaching it this year because he is going on leave in 3rd term, but he had been teaching 3/4 bio for at least the past 10 years. He was very good. I had him in other year levels for general science.

Ohh that's unfortunate..I also have a teacher who stand in front of me and kept talking..he barely wrote any notes on the board so that's why I have to scribble down the stuff he's talking in a fast pace..I guess I have to bring a recorder next time!! Hey just pm me if you want any resources to prepare for you next sac because I hope that you will do very well for the next sac :)

Yea it seems that you can cope with your subjects because it's not overwhelming..Good luck on your next week outrageous sac

Sure, what you need is to apply an efficient study technique..if you think that the study technique doesn't work for you, you have to change it to make sure it really works for you.
Haha of course, you're welcome :D

Does anyone have good practice enzyme sac questions that they can send to me?
