Title: What matters more rank or score in SACs?
Post by: mpathy on March 18, 2012, 08:10:55 pm
This question has probably been answered a hundred times already by now, but I just wanted to get a clarification since I've been getting different answers from different teachers.. one teacher basically told me that you have to get all the marks in SACs + do good in the exam to get a good study score while another teacher said that the most important thing is ranking while the score isn't really that important.

So which is it? Is it a combination of both, is it just the your rank that counts or the score that you get for SACs.

Thanks

rank only. It doesn't matter if you get 15% for your sacs, if thats the highest in your school, then you have the best standing for your sac marks. How that translates to an actual score will depend on how your cohort goes in both the VCAA end of year (or mid-year) exam, and the GAT.

Unless im now old and things are changing...

Rank is certainly more important as the one who gets the highest score gets the highest rank

Rank is the ONLY thing that matters when it comes to SAC's. Score means NOTHING. If you're rank 1 in the class, you could have a 50% average or a 100% average. It wouldn't matter at all.

It's only the exam where your score matters.

so say you're ranked first in the class, with 86% on the sac (and say this is the average for the year) would that correlate to an A+ in your GA1/2 (non-science subject)???

That depends how well you do in the exam(s).
If you're rank 1 in SAC's, then your cohort can't bring you down. What I mean by that is: imagine you are in a cohort of 5 people where the other 4 people in your class are really bad and score in the 20's. If you are not rank 1 in SAC's, then their lack of performance will bring your SAC marks down, regardless of how well you do in the exam.
But if you're rank 1 in the class, then you could still potentially score a 50. If you're rank 1, then it's only your exam score that will bring you down. The rest of the class won't affect you.

Half your study score is YOUR exam score.

The other half is: the exam score from your school that has the same ranking as your SAC ranking. If you're highest in SACs, you get given the highest exam score for your SAC mark. If you're second in SACs, you get the second-highest exam score for your SAC mark. If you're last in SACs, you get the lowest exam score for your SAC mark.

The marks your teacher gave you all on your SACs is entirely irrelevant.

To see how well you need to do on the exam to get a particular study score, check the VCE stats on the VCAA page. For example, in Legal you need about 90% for an A+, and if you get an A+ on both SACs and exam you start to break into the 40s. ***Not 90% from your teacher - 90% AFTER they do that score-matching exercise described above***

In other words, beat everyone else in your school in SACs, and then make sure ALL of you kill it in the exam (as in, share notes and help the weaker people prepare, too). Forget the exact percentage your teacher gives you. It doesn't mean anything.

So what if you come 2nd or 3rd in SACs and get the highest score in the exam, will you potentially get the highest study score in the cohort?

rank > score

even if you scored better than the 1st ranked person?

I don't exactly know the details, it's just a general statement..

There is no set rule for this.

eg. English
If the rank 1 got A+ (100/100) and A+ (100/100) for SACs (unit 3 and 4 respectively) and then bombed the exam with a C.
If you (not rank 1) got lower SAC scores, say 90/100 and 80/100 (for example), and you got 55/60 for the exam (A+), then you will definitely beat the rank 1.

Yes, I know someone who had a 60% average for Further Maths SACs, got perfect scores on the exams and ended up with a 46.

Yeah, take-home message, if you smash the exams, you should get a decent (40+) score :)
