Title: Preparing for ETC1000 exam
Post by: nacho on May 05, 2012, 05:11:49 pm
Hey,
what sort of content will I be expecting in the end of sem stats exam?
Is it a multiple choice exam, or short answer or both.

is it just content from the topic notes?
Do i need to watch the demo lectures and CD to prepare for this exam?
Please post anything that may be relevant for exam prep,
any help greatly appreciated!

when i did it, it was only short answer, basically just know your topic notes inside out and your weekly tute work, questions tend to be similar to tute work. No need to watch the demo lectures, nothing's on that normally.

r u guys given past exams?

Past exams are the best way, they don't change much. Just go over them heaps of times and you'll smash it

Past year exams are the way to go...gives you a good indication of what the actual exam will be like. That being said, I also relied on solutions and the lecture notes when I did it last year first sem. Good luck! (:

today Brett Inder was taking us through a practice exam while speaking out his 'thought process' in how to answer each question
he hasn't finished the whole paper yet but he will be finishing it off next Tuesday and he will give us Q and A time

tl;dr - week 11&12 lectures are actually useful for ETC1000

*edit*

"well judging by the attendance for the past few weeks I bet most of you guys dont want to be as cool as me as you'd rather be boring accountants" - Brett

Does that mean I'm not cool now? Just because I don't want to be an accountant?

Apologies about the 2009 materials... some pages have writing on them... I had to scan my hardcopies and convert them to pdf, since I didn't have them in softcopy. The fun part is that you can see *exactly* where I got bored, lol.

Sorry guys, but I'm about to double, triple, quadruple post.
The max attachment size for each post is 2048kb, so it can't be helped.

Sorry... I've been fighting with AN for about half an hour... the only way I can get this file small enough to attach is by zipping it.

could start another thread but might as well ask here

-can someone explain how you make the hypothesis tests?

ie. how do you know when you want to determine when H0 = 0, or >0 etc and same goes for H1... why do you choose those hypothesis?
I get the t-stat and t-crit part but I dont really get the theory for it and reading the graphs in topic 3 confuse me

H0: B1 = 0 null hypothesis, you're just testing if the coefficient is 0 or not, if the coefficient is 0, means that it doesn't have an effect.
Alternate hypothesis is basically the relationship you're resting
if the alternate is =/= 0, two tailed test, means you're just testing if it actually has an effect.
if alternate is > or <0 you're testing if the relationship is greater than or less than.

It's pre self explanatory, doing some exercise will help you get it right (again, past exam papers).

Idk why you didn't get any, as far as I know Brett always post an abundance of past exam papers. I usually just study from the past exams and the solutions. The notes are helpful if you don't get anything  but sometimes I find that they're "over" informative (which I guess is good.. cause they're trying to get you to understand the concept and all).

advice, if you do older exam papers, make sure that the course hasn't changed... learnt this the hard way lol.
