Title: English Speech coming up in 1-2 weeks!
Post by: 12345luke on May 07, 2012, 04:53:41 pm
So I have my English oral presentation next Wednesday or the Wednesday after!
And our topic we have to do is the issue of "smacking children - for / against"

I have decided to take on the persona as the Prime Minister :P haha

What advice / tips would you have for doing a good oral presentation and everything!

Anything will be great!

Thanks!

lol love the idea. Keep a cynic tone  8)
I actually did the same topic last year for my oral. I took on the persona of a degenerate who had grew up in a dysfunctional family. Didnt go so well (6/20)  :).

As a general rule of thumb make sure you counter argue all your points instead of simply stating them. You may also want to define what qualifies as a 'slap' if that makes sense.

I think it is absolutely essential to not get caught up in the character. For my oral presentation, which I got full marks for, I spoke about the need to combat poverty in the third world, without using a character at all. Admittedly, different schools have different marking schemes, but ultimately it comes down to your ability to persuade with language and this will be heavily influenced by tone of voice, body language etc.
Unfortunately no one can, without serious face to face coaching, teach you these things. However, my advice would be to know, not only your material through and through, but the order in which it is being presented [so you don't mess up].
A few other things:
1. Big words ARE good, but only when used organically.
2. Eye contact is essential.
3. CLEAR and logical argumentation is at least half of the marks.
4. Whenever you explicitly mention a dictionary definition a fairy dies.

Out of curiosity, why are you adopting a persona?

I didn't adopt one (got the same mark as tullfrog - in the SAC and in ATAR LOL), and mine went pretty well.

In addition to what has just been said above 9great advice btw):
5. Use of pauses - use them and use them appropriately, can make a good speech a great speech
6. Humour, if appropriate and in moderation, is a good thing
7. You have hands, use them to make the audience believe that you are passionate about what you are saying - non-verbal performance is very important

Good luck :)
