Title: Revs or Further?
Post by: vashappenin on May 16, 2012, 07:46:10 pm
Ok, so I'm deciding between whether it's better for me to do Revs or Further next year.
I'm a pretty decent maths student (currently doing methods), and atm in history 1/2 i'm highest in the class.
I love both subjects, but I've heard good and bad about both.
I'm currently doing history, but I've got the opportunity to switch to general so I can take on further next year.
I'm considering further, but i need opinions and pros/cons from people who've done these subjects so as to clarify my doubts. Also, info on the workload?

Thanks in advance! :)
p.s. between revs and further, i'm quite equally interested in both, hence this poll. :)
Also, I've read somewhere on AN that revs is underrated and that it's really hard, which is what caused me to consider further

im doing further at the moment, so far (done stats/matrices) and it is all stuff i learn't in year 10 (someone can shed light on other topics), so if you're decent at maths you'd have no problem but i'd recommend doing a subject you prefer and it sounds like you prefer history over mathematics but it is always good to have a maths subject in year 12, just my opinion though

You don't need to do General Maths Standard to do Further Maths next year. Methods is also acceptable (I'm assuming you're doing Methods since you said that you're not bad at maths).

Both of these subjects are pretty accessible, but Revolutions is much less competitive than Further Maths. If you're good at and enjoy maths but feel like Specialist is a little beyond your ability, Further is a great choice. Otherwise, it's a bit of a waste of time since the subject is somewhat 'useless' when it comes to university prerequisites.

I can only advise you to choose the subject you enjoy more. :)

Well personally I find Revs to have been a very interesting* subject, and Further to be quite a dull one. Further is generally a lot easier in terms of the course work during the year but of course you have to take into account the scaling and larger competition (as Stick said), which I'm not an expert on.
If you're interested in history and don't mind not having a maths subject then I'd choose Revs as it really is interesting, but of course it's whatever you decide you're more interested in, and what workload you're willing to take on - doing revs in year 11 like I did is probably a lot easier than in year 12. And as for you switching to general or staying with history 1&2, I don't think it's a big deal if you change your mind later and switch to whatever subject you didn't choose initially, be it Revs or general. I hope this helps to some extent.  :)

*Well, definitely not at the beginnings of the revolutions I studied. France took a while to get interesting. But it does get there, imo  :P

I would go with history.
Further maths isn't what I would call "interesting". I mean, it's an okay subject to do, especially if you struggle with maths, but anyone who is passionate at maths would find methods/specialist far more interesting.
It's like choosing between English and literature. If you don't like those sort of writing subjects, then I would recommend English over literature (since it is easier and more straight forward), but a passionate student would probably find literature a lot more interesting.

^I'm going to be more conservative.

Choose the one that you think you will get the highest SS in.

While it may not be a university prerequisite, I'm finding Further to be ridiculously useful at uni (weird, but true). To be honest, it's probably the most useful subject for a Commerce degree (at least at Monash).

Yes, the statistics topic would be very helpful for a Commerce degree, so please consider this. :)
