what is a SoM

Statement of Marks, purchasable from VCAA and says how many marks you got for each question and for the exam.

Everyone gets their mark (in the form of a letter grade, A+, A etc..) via the school.
What you won't get is the mark you received out of 70 for example.
If you got an SoM, you would get that mark alongside the marks you received for each question in the exam.
Basically don't need SoM unless you're curious.

Do heaps of people get their SoM? as in common thing to buy? Or just wait til school receives the mark?

Some people get their SoM, many don't.
The school doesn't get the specific marks, only the letter grade.
Get it if you wish (costs like 8 bucks or something? not too sure)
If you're content in knowing what letter grade you have then you shouldn't need one.
TBH you really dont need it unless you're so curious as to what marks you received.

It's mot useful for midyears and deciding whether a sub can be in your topm 4 for e.g.

For mid-year, school gets the result and they'll give it to you whilst at school.

For end of year + SS, you get it online and then through the mail shortly after that (at primary residential address) :)

But don't write off a subject after buying a statement of marks and seeing that you didn't get THAT good a score. Know one dude who did Bio in 2009, bought his statement, got 63/75, was quite shattered (he was the best in that year at our school). Almost wrote off Bio, but did SOME study regardless. He ended up getting a 50. (His endofyear score was something ridiculous ike 73.5/75 in a really hard exam)

Quite often it would seem as though your midyear doesn't count THAT much, as your midyear score could give you access to a wide range of scores. I know a guy, for instance, who got 67/72 in chem midyear and ended up getting a 50, and I know a 68.5/72 in chem midyear (and A+ in end of year) and got a 45.
