Title: Analysing Articles
Post by: Flying Emu on June 13, 2012, 05:41:46 pm
I'm having a bit of trouble on a task we were given. It asked us to analyze the persuasive techniques although I can't seem to identify any clear techniques other than inclusive language.

Quote
THE masses are asking how we
are going to fill in the six
months while football has
closed its cathedrals.

Indeed football is a religion.
Now is the season we enter
monastic retreat, the time we
meditate in deep sorrow, or
give thanks with tears of joy
because God favored our club
for the flag.

Football, whether it be the
sect devoted to handball (NRL)
or hand-and-foot football
(AFL) or football football
(soccer), is the meaning of life.

It is culture and family. It is
faith and hope. It is alpha and
omega. It is the final answer.

In sombre October we turn
to the muse, asking what fate
has for us and the team 26
weeks hence.

The months between are
meaningless, despite the Cup
and Christmas and cricket.

We will grow in mounting
impatience to renew our vows
come Match, too far away.

It doesn't seem to be much of a persuasive piece, and I'm really finding this one article an ass.

What was the contention your class agreed upon?

This was just an article from a worksheet we were given. There was no discussed contention. It looks like an extract from a newspaper.

Ok after looking back at the article I did notice a few more than just the 1 technique.

1) Inclusive language

2) Simile "Indeed, football is a religion" (2nd paragraph)

3) Exaggeration "Deep sorrow" (2nd paragraph)

Can any1 see any more?

I'm a youngling(Y10) here, but I hope I can help contribute:
First thing off I bat I noticed that there's a sense of uniformity and belonging on something that is cultural and social, that is, mixing religion stirred with family values : "It is culture and family. It is faith and hope. It is alpha and omega. It is the final answer." That's an appeal right there.

Also a metaphor: "Indeed football is a religion", and the article darts back and forth comparing how football is a religion that they devote themselves to. A simile could only be accounted for it is said something along the lines of, "indeed, football is like a religion", the article states that it IS a religion, making their belief and ideals sacred to football fans.

That's all I can find, which I could be wrong. If I am, I hope I've given you some insight.

Cort.

Nicely picked up, it intentionally blurs the lines of sport and religion although I'm still unsure of what the name of the technique is if there is one >.<

In a way its appeal to tradition but not completely.
