What's with all the worrying and preparation? I thought we can't prepare for it and does it affect our study scores? I thought GAT results are only used if we are involved in an accident, or is this wrong?

My brother walked out of his Year 12 GAT after half an hour without touching anything. He was also under the impression that the GAT did not matter, like many people on this forum.
Listen carefully, brahs..
My brother had to repeat Year 12 because no university would accept him into any course after seeing his GAT result, despite his ATAR of 97.90.
Take the GAT seriously or you'll have to repeat Year 12 like my brother....
Addendum: This post is nothing but a glorified fib. I don't have a brother. GAT results may come into play in the middle-band but do not directly impact upon your ATAR unless of course you get a Derived Examination Score.

The General Achievement Test or GAT is a test of general knowledge and skills in written communication, mathematics, science and technology, humanities, the arts and social sciences taken by all Victorian students prior to completing their VCE.
It consists of two writing tests and 70 multiple choice questions on science, technology, mathematics and humanities. The first writing test is usually an informative piece based on information given, while the second is an opinionative to be based on statements provided. At the end of the year the student will receive a statement of marks showing their numerical score for each section (Writing, Arts/Humanities and Science/Maths) as well as a standardised study score out of 50 for each section.
The GAT is part of the graduation requirements and does count towards a student's final VCE results or ATAR (formerly ENTER), the GAT plays an important role in checking that a school's assessments and examinations have been accurately assessed. Therefore, if a student is enrolled in Units 3 and 4 of any VCE study (whether in Year 11 or Year 12), they must sit the GAT unless exempted by the VCAA.
Year 12 Western Australian students sat the GAT for a short period. This test was introduced into Western Australia as a trial to provide schools with feedback on the standard of assessment used for the new WACE courses. The GAT in Western Australia was however abandoned after the trial period and is no longer used.

Atleast someone's giving us some guidance... Not everyone finds the sarcasm funny, specifically if they've got no bloody clue about the freaking GAT, so thankyou for that..

Although I'm not sure about the validity of this claim but a friend of mine actually told me today that he was speaking to a high-up teacher at our school and this teacher said that if you do well on the GAT (not sure how well you have to do), Monash University will add another NINE aggregate points to your ATAR when considering your application.
Once again, I'm not sure how true this is, so if anyone knows anything about this - please chime in!

Do you have any more information in regards to the minimum scores you need on the GAT to benefit from the 6.5 aggregate points?

Would my 50 for English from the GAT I did in Year 11 count?
Also, just one 50 gets you the 6.5?

I feel like writing a completely philosophical, coherent piece of prose exploring the corruption of the individual in the 21st century.
Perhaps I'll give my assessor a whole new, fresh outlook on their life and where it's heading - resulting in me getting a perfect mark for the essay...

Ok I'm going to be a party-pooper and dare to write a genuine, humour-free post.
I don't think a lot of people really prepare for it because of mid-years taking up all their time and concentration. The GAT may help you (it also very well may not), you never know what happens tommorow. Nobody should go in and take it as a joke (although try and have a bit of fun while you do it :p). If you're in there for three hours, you may as well make the best of that time and try your hardest, you won't lose anything by doing this, if anything, it is the opposite.
Technically you can 'prepare' be doing past GATs, but really, only if you seriously have/had nothing else to do and in your case (OP), you had mid years to worry about. Even then it's not something you should go all out for and study hardcore. So relax and just do your best tommorow :) I'm sure you, and everyone else, is/are more than capable of writing essays and solving simple/general maths, science and humanities related questions.

Of course i'm going to take it seriously, i just don't feel stressed at all because i fell that studying for the GAT is a waste of time, time which could be spent doing hw!
