The Herald Sun Career Expo is happening in less than a month! Woo! Which means planning for it starts now.
I know a lot of you went to The Age expo, so if you have any suggestions for areas we could have improved on, please note them here! Even if you didn't go, I'd still love to hear your ideas on what kinds of things we could have at the AN stall for this one. :)
Our focus will be on selling the books. However, obviously getting more exposure for the site and attracting membership will also be important!
For the The Age expo, we had two posters on the board thingy behind the stall which looked like this (please don't judge me, I had to make them last-minute and I am a musician, not a graphic designer :(): http://imgur.com/a/TlIWJ
Please suggest improvements to the posters or ideas for new posters! We want to draw people in - I don't have much marketing knowledge but I'm sure many of you do.
We also thought of having a mini poster with the names/ATARs/degrees of the volunteers for the day, a bit like this: http://i.imgur.com/7qJuQ.jpg - so anyone with questions about say, medicine, would be tempted to stop by the stall and ask.
I also plan on getting AN tshirts. Pre-emptive "suck it up princesses" to the volunteers, we will look more professional this way. Connect Education had personalised shirts and they looked swanky as. (Our chocolates are still better though)
Any ideas on what we could put on the stall itself? This year we were going to have a computer screen with a Powerpoint presentation extolling the wonders of the books, but the stall table was way too small and it was just getting in the way.
Let's make this expo even more successful than the The Age one!

I think that, in my personal opinion, that what you need is chicks in bikinis handing out free t-shirts.

Could you post a list of the books / guides that you are selling :O

Right here :) Announcing the pre-order for 4 more ATARNotes Study Guides! (and English, of course)

This time, keep the desk nice and tidy too :D :P

Shirts are big. We're getting shirts at work for the next con we go to, because members keep asking for them.
So yeah, shirts are big.
-
Fly me out there. Best idea ever.

Well, all the information that's on those posters needs to be there (and obviously we'll have two posters to fit all the books onto it)...

I have to say, the ATARNotes stall was the messiest I saw at the Age expo. Maybe it's a tribute to Dan's lifestyle, but we shouldn't be handing out flyers from a bomb shelter.
-
OK, I volunteered at the last Expo, and I'll be coming out to Volunteer at this one as well, on the Friday, but here's what I think will make us a lot better.
1) Better organisation, last time, our desk was really untidy, and it looked like we were trying to push too many things
2) Better security, Connect education (next door) managed to catch someone trying to nick the books we had on the table, meaning that we'll have to ensure we have enough people there so that we have people on the table at all times.
3) If we're doing a running slideshow presentation like last time, we really need a more reasonable sized monitor as opposed to Dan's 26 inch TV we used last time that just took up too much desk space and made us look like we couldn't afford proper equipment. I have a 17 inch old LCD monitor which is a much more reasonable size, I got it for $20 from Monash, so I can donate that to AN to use for future events and such.
4) ATARNotes T-Shirts that are personalised, or have each of the volunteers having nametags which give our name and identify us as from ATARNotes.
5) iPads, tablets and computers. We need to have more computers to show off the site and let people browse around and play with it. We need to let people sign up on the spot, and have small cards so that they can write down their username, so that they remember to come back on ATARNotes.
6) We need to show off the strengths of our website which is the fact that we are a community. We need to need people to see what we truly are rather than seeing us as a "nerd-community", meaning that we need to be trendier, have more volunteers and we should organise what we are going to say so that we come off as a trendy, connected bunch. Look at the way that Connect Education markets and you'll see that they come across as young, energetic and insightful, whereas sometimes I think we looked a little bit too much of a nerd-club.
7) Rohit and I tried this out and it worked well, we need to walk around the place and give out flyers, take along a tablet and copies of the book so that people can have a browse and then point them to the ATARNotes stall, some people are interested and had a flip through the books and stuff.
8 ) I like the ATARNotes Chocolate, but to be honest, they're not really doing much, people just come by and take the chocolates well, beacuse they're free and the chocolates leave no impressions of ATARNotes, we need things which people keep and use that will remind them of ATARNotes, such as AN pens or highlighters (I prefer highlighters cause it's more unique), AN erasers, AN exercise books, AN notepads. It might be a good idea to have a system like "everyone gets an ATARNotes Pen, people who sign up as well will get a pen and a highlighter, people who buy a book get a pen, a highlighter and a notepad" for example.
9) Since the ATARNotes Magazine is going to launch in a few days time, I have a good idea, push it hard so that the magazine will launch the day before the stall, that way, people can have a flick through that. Then we can run a special for the next edition (the September edition), and we can take photos of the people who come to the stall, asking them if they want to feature in the next edition, good way to get the students involved in the process. Dev can organise KT to come down, or we'll just take the good old point and shoot and take photos.
10) Clean up the background, last time, we had too many posters, it just looked clunky, we should just have a big "ATARNotes" banner, and then just a focused poster, with little text, that describes the main points of ATARNotes. I also like the flyers (the idea of them), I reckon I designed them well but we probably need to shift away from the forum to focus on our other endeavours such as books and the magazine, the forum is now just one of the services offered by ATARNotes.
Lastly, Dan should shave, he scares the kids away :P
-
When I visited the ATARNotes stall at the Age Expo, it was really busy and I had to wait a while to talk to some of the staff. Perhaps having more people on hand would be helpful so that there is less congestion, particularly with the purchasing of books.

We can have more people, but the purchase of books is limited by the fact that we only have one EFTPOS machine. It needs to be a more streamlined process though.

No, the table is far too small to hold a monitor. I said this in my original post - there's just not enough space, especially as I plan to get a stand of some sort to display all 5 books properly. There's NO way we'll be able to fit any computers on it.
Personalised tshirts will be too expensive unfortunately. I had to twist enwiabe's arm even to get him to agree to tshirts in the first place :P
ATARNotes stationery is a good idea. I will look into that. Anybody got any ideas as to what kind of place might be good for this?
I don't know what the ATARNotes magazine launch date is, but I'll keep that in mind.
I would love for someone to redesign the posters. I know a lot of people spent ages standing there squinting trying to read them.
-
i can give a shot at redesigning the posters.. :)
ill send you a PM when i finish it ok Ninwa?
i might come and help out with a friend.. if you require some helpers!
indian marketing strategies will surely suffice ;p

But 17 inch monitor is a good size, Connect managed to pull it off really well and it looked great. I reckon we should have a laptop there for people to sign up at least, I'm pretty sure I'll be able to source an 11 inch computer from one of my friends, if not me then Dev should be able to.
I'm not sure about where to get stationery, but I'll do some research

Thank you :)
@Paul: I think part of the reason the table felt so tiny is that we had spare copies of books flying around everywhere. Once I get a stand to put them in, maybe it'll be better, idk, we'll bring Dan's monitor again to the bump-in (assuming they have one) and see how it fits
-
I reckon the stand will be a good idea, but remember that we will have many more books this time around
Alright then, if you want, you can let me know and I'll bring in my smaller monitor to the bump-in as well and see how it fits if Dan's is too big.
Also, on last thought, I reckon since we're not having T-Shirts then we should have name badges, would you like me to make some? (I'll make a few empty ones as well so we can just write in the names for anyone who decides to volunteer and rock up unexpectedly)
-
Dimensions of poster? The one your provided or A4? Because that image has random dimensions ^-^
-
You need to get the triangular highlighters (eg) and give those away. I attribute a large amount of UoM's success to these :D
-
@Paul we ARE having tshirts (as long as I can find a cheap enough quote for them) but they just won't be personalised. Name tags are a definite.
I know we'll have many more books, hence the stand :P I'm thinking one like for example the Checkpoints people had. We'll also have backup copies behind the stand for when we're showing people what they look like etc.
@Disafear the posters we had at the expo were A1
-
Oh right, t-shirts just not personalised, OK then, I'll start working on some nametags, would you be able to tell me the font you used on the posters, just so I can get some sort of a unity going there
But yeah, the stand should work really well :D
-
btw, I'm free to come on pretty much any of those days too :)
+1, to Paul's earlier long post, although, I like the chocolates :P
-
I have a feeling the stationery will go too far over budget - a good idea in theory, but we're not made of money. I've put in a couple of requests for quotes and we'll see what happened
The two days I was at the expo, we used the chocolates as a way of drawing people in - offer them a chocolate (most will accept), and then they feel obliged to listen to what we have to say. (Muahaha)

Right, the chocolates are only for the customers, eh nina?

Stationery tends to be the more expensive option when compared with chocolates. We tried importing pens from overseas, but even then, the extra costs outweighed any potential benefits. To be honest, I think students would prefer chocolate over pens. They can grab them from 100 other stalls giving them away.
-
That's why we should go for stuff like highlighters or little jotter pads rather than pens, because everyone gives out pens.
The things with chocolates is that people will take a chocolate and just eat it and won't even remember what ATARNotes is two days later.

depends. if its like those crappy easter egg chocolate you get, or cadbury dairy milk style. the latter would make me crave for more. hence making me sign up here and ordering some.
mmm
btw, what about stuff like stress balls,cups/mugs, WRIST BANDS?!, rulers...,?

Or just give away all the money that it would take to buy that stuff, then everyone would remember AN.
-
Heh. We had chocolates from the Chocolate Box and they were awesome.
The budget won't allow both chocolates AND stationery, so I really don't know at this point. I did find these double-ended highlighter + pen things which I thought were pretty cool.
What do you guys think of having AN-branded bags? For when people buy books. Especially for those people who might buy multiple books - saves them having to carry it in their arms, plus increased brand recognition from people carrying AN bags around the expo?
-

Depends on what the purpose of the chocolate is. AN seemed to be using it to attract students and then relying on the selling skills of the fabulous people helping out to close the sale.
For brand recognition, they weren't the best. But to attract students to the stall in the first place, they were great!
AN bags might work a bit better. Not sure what the Herald Sun Expo is like, but if they give out free bags (like TheAge Expo), then students might just put their AN bags inside those.

ATAR-Notes pens
From a chem-excursion to Monash i still use the pens I got

I think if they were calico bags, there would be less chance of that happening. That'd be pretty expensive though, I imagine.

not sure if trolling or not,
but those things I mentioned are just things you usually get from 'promo showbags' and exhibitions..
perhaps the cup would be a bit too costly tho :p

mm, what bout those cotton library bags? I'd imagine they'd be significantly cheaper since people usually chip them out in bulk amounts!
-
Okay, so we'll be getting bags for people who buy books to carry them around in - and hopefully gain a bit more exposure for us when carried around the expo.
We need idea for what logo/words to print on the bags. Something like this but again I am artistically rather retarded and any suggestions/better ideas are welcome!
-
Just my 2 cents
Chocolates
AN labelled Chocolate
- Great for grabbing people's attention temporarily, but without someone directly talking to them they're likely to leave pretty fast
- From what I've read they were pretty popular as well as cheap!
- Unfortunetly, their chocolately goodness don't provide a long term form of exposure, no-one really holds on to chocolate wrappers nor do they think "Which company tried to give me that chocolate
Personalised Shirts
- Expensive, which may or may not weigh the costs of adding it in
- They would be great for setting the tone of AtarNotes as friendly and inviting. Sloganising shirts like having Thushan's as "Mr 100.95", Russ's as like "Pretty Girl" or something, I am really bad at this and having all of them being really friendly would be really helpful in showing how inviting.
- Just spitt balling, but use some of the poster budget to add their Uni degree to the shirt?
Pens, Pencils, Rulers, Mech. Pencils
- From what Sam Utute has said, expensive
- Not a very unique item to have, many other stalls will have them and they'll leave less of an impact than the maze pens (which are awesome) on long term exposure
- People (definitely NOT me :-X) see a pen stall and just try and grab them, later losing them in the first 20 seconds. I know a few others that do this aswell, so I assume this is pretty common
Highlighters
- Part of the reason I went to my Highschool :P
- Are more unique than pens, pencils, rulers, mech pencils, etc
- Aren't as readily used, therefore less likely to be lost
- A bit of a niche thing, I think they'll either win the crowd over or not
Overall, there's two things to getting people at the stall. There's attracting them in the first place and then keeping their attention long enough. A great strategy that i think Ninwa mentioned was offering the children chocolate (lol) and then making then exposing AN, but if we wanted to market AN as a more 'trendy' and 'friendly' community I feel like be more personable with the people would leave a better impression. Imagine this;
AN Attendee: Chocolate?
Person: Sure
AN Attendee: So, how's VCE for you? Which subjects are you doing?
Person: Indonesian Basket Weaving... (they'd probably be a bit hesistant at this point)
AN Attendee: OH, I did that subject as well! You finding it hard...
* conversation continues to the point at which the AN Anttendee shamelessly plugs AN.
Also utilizing the idea to give anyone that has purchased a book or two a bag with the AN logo on it aswell as the website plug. It's been mentioned that the plastic ones that they provide during the Melbourne Show are a bit too much, but what about the brown paper tote bag? They're pretty stylist and easy to print on, and I couldn't imagine paper would be that expensive. I'm not really a very good designer but
(http://i.imgur.com/KILXj.png)
I know the logo looks really bad, I couldn't scale it properly because I just copied and pasted the source file from the homepage and I cannot do text for my life. But something like that I think would be really effective, the bright red, yellow and red would catch peoples eyes really easily, and having just the website there is already indicative of what we do. We're about ATAR Notes.
As for keeping long term exposure, I'm really not sure how to do that. The only way I could see would be via people being personal?
I think it'd be great if the stall was kept relativity small and clean. I'm not entirely sure how big the stall is, but I've got access to a 17", 19", 21.5" and 24" monitor if you'd like to borrow it for the day. As well as a Macbook air if you wanted to maintain that trendeh view, but there'd be some conditions on the Macbook :P. The poster you designed looks great, but from a person that cannot do fonts at all, the fon't isn't very nice (I'm sorry!). I think Pauls onto something with people wondering around (i think it's pretty much essential for these guys to be wearing a shirt that distinguishes AN) and hovering around stalls stealing their people! If you need help, myself and I'm sure theres HEAPS of other people on the site that wouldn't mind helping out if you so require it :)
and again, these are just my opinions :)
I'll add to this tomorrow I just need some sleep, it's 2:51AM :)
[/list]
-
I like the idea of AN shirts.
I'd wear it to uni if it was like a plain white shirt + AN Logo + my user name and maybe my avatar
that'd be so cool
and maybe that caption too 'The Thought Police'
pens would be the best idea?
PS: Do you need any extra help with the expo?
I'm in need of practicing my marketing and sales skills and would love to help out
also i think the font used in : http://imgur.com/a/TlIWJ is shit
seems unprofessional, may as well be comic sans. is anyone else not feeling this?
2) Better security, Connect education (next door) managed to catch someone trying to nick the books we had on the table, meaning that we'll have to ensure we have enough people there so that we have people on the table at all times.
I'm from rowville
-
I'd be happy to try for a few days off.
Nina just message me if your happy with me volunteering. :P
-
If you're going with the shirt idea, can we get one too?
-
I can help with design a bit if you need anything.
-
I have an idea for another cost-cutting measure, make all those volunteering to pay a certain fee for a shirt, like I'd be happy to pay $10-$15 for a decent AN shirt and I reckon most others would be too - or maybe give them the option of having a personalised shirt - like I would be happy paying a few extra dollars to have my shirt personalised.
Bags would be expensive, but they might be worth it, not sure.
-
@Kanon:
- nice profile pic :P
- you're right, the chocolates are merely a way of drawing people in. Most people will accept the offer of chocolate, and then they feel obligated to listen to my rambling about AN. And most people I found were actually interested in what I had to say.
- shirts just make us look more professional. I found that at the The Age expo there was nothing to differentiate the volunteers, so during busy periods when there were HEAPS of people, a lot of them didn't know who to ask if they wanted to buy a book. Not sure personalised shirts are worth the trouble though, since volunteers tend to come and go and we're never 100% sure who will show up.
- I already requested about 20 billion quotes from customised stationery companies and unfortunately every single one is out of our budget this year :(
- the bag design is great. We actually just put in an order for those brown paper bags. We plan to order customised stickers and stick them on the bags, similar to your design
- Why do you have 4 monitors?! :P thanks for the offer. Not sure if we'll even have a monitor, last expo there was just not enough space on the table for it. And I wouldn't risk your Macbook, when it gets REALLY busy there's nobody to keep an eye on things.
@David: if you can design a better poster and/or a design for the stickers to go on the bags (ideally just a massive AN circle logo thing and a few words about how awesome we are) that would be amazing :D
@everyone else, we'll figure out the volunteers thing closer to the date :)
-
Nina, if it helps, when you get a quote for a personalised shirt, I'm willing to pay for my own :) - I know it's not a lot but it's probably the equivalent of a book sale and hey, I get a nice shirt so win-win :)
-
That's a very kind offer. Hopefully it won't be necessary, since we're going about the "customised" bags in a very el cheapo way, but we'll see :)
-
k. If you gimme some specifics/deadlines/dimensions, I'll see what I can come up with.
-
Do those bags only have printing on one side or both?
-
Do those bags only have printing on one side or both?
They're stickers which Nina will be sticking on (I think) - so we can stick it on one side or both, I just think it depends on how much the stickers cost.
-
k. If you gimme some specifics/deadlines/dimensions, I'll see what I can come up with.
I don't know if Dan's ordered the bags yet, but they guarantee 10-day delivery and I'd like to get all the bags ready at least a day before the expo, so let's say deadline 25 July?
The bags are normal brown paper bags 33cm(h) x 25cm(w), I'd say the sticker should be about 20cm(w) x 15cm(h)? Dan wants the AN logo to be the main feature because it's recognisable, but I think we should also have "ATARNotes Series of Study Guides - Written by elite VCE graduates" or similar.
@Disa the printing will be on both sides

Spending 80-100 to travel by train to Melbourne..
Look guys, may not be able to. Tried asking for the Saturday off but a few have already booked it off.
EDIT: Going to try hard though. So sick of stuff coming up when I want to help you guys.

Seems as though I'm giving another talk on Friday 2:30 pm.

Selling the books was so much fun :)

What was the traffic like today?

Kid: What are these, matchsticks? :o
Also, Mao is so tall!

Arrive there at 9.30 right? Looking forward to it :)

I had a guy ask me why we were handing out butter...
Traffic was good, more parents thankfully which = more money. We managed to sell a few books thanks to the kickass salespeople skills of the volunteers today :)
I broke the eftpos machine :(

Finding AN stand is like hell without the map! The numbers are not really arranged in order at career expo.

Did you? I didnt see anyone handing out chocolates LOL
Btw, all of you today did a really good job. When I went there to buy books, a guy advertised the study guides with lots of details and providing info about authors as well. And the AN T-shirt looks awesome :D Keep it up tomorrow ^^

Lol, why does taiga have his laptop sideways? XD

Tomorrow is going to be the best of the three, for anyone who is planning to come ;D
i may teach the nina, dev and dan a dance trio to jazz up the atarnotes table if we get enough spectators.

Btw, if there was a medal for selling books, Gold would definitely go to Taiga, who managed to sell an English book to a father of a kid in Year 4.

Don't you write test-response essays in all sort of year levels?
And the english study guide in not bounded to a study design anyways

Pretty sure it is. It's a guide which is very thoroughly tailored towards improving essay writing skills but given that it has three sections specifically allocated to the three areas of study, I'd say its value would decrease significantly if they took Context and Language Analysis out of the Year 12 course. You're right in saying that text responses are pretty familiar across all year levels in a number of countries though.
-
Why I thought it was justified:
He wanted to improve his son's general English skills. The book teaches how to pick out evidence, how to sound smart whilst quoting it, and the structure in which you should do that in. Whether it's language analysis or text response, those are vital skills that anyone needs to know.
Odds are 2/3 of those study designs will still remain in 8 years. The only possible change they could make is moving to persuasive tasks, and/or or removing context. So even if you weren't to touch the book for that long, it's still probably good. That's assuming you only want to use it in year 12, in all honesty Text Response and Context are things which you get started on super early. I got it in year 7-10, so it might not be that long of a wait.

Of course - there's always the alternative explanation - Dan: "You are a just a horrible person"
