Thoughts?
-
99.999% sure a particle at 125GeV +/ 0.6GeV has been found which is consistent with a standard model higgs. Whether or not it's the higgs has yet to be determined.
-
ATLAS confirms CMS results by finding a new particle @ 125GeV @ 5 sigma which is 99.9999% confidence
-
significance ?
-
Basically it will confirm the current Standard Model if this is in fact a Higgs Boson. Which, and someone will correct me if I'm wrong, is the basis of modern day physics. If the Higgs does not exist we need to find a new "Standard Model" and physics will break down and everyone will start floating away because gravity won't exist anymore.
-
Just kidding! Physics won't break down and we'll all still be on the ground. The Higgs Boson is a predicted elementary particle that gives all the other elementary particles their masses and other properties. If we discover the Higgs then well our current standard model and understanding of the elementary particles is correct.
This will explain it much better than I ever will: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-18696886

The reason we can't call this new boson which has been found at ~126GeV is because the only property we know about it at the moment is mass (which is the 126GeV). A Higgs is expected to have no spin and no electric and no colour charges. More analysis of this new boson to determine if it has the same expected properties as the Higgs will determine if it is the one we've been looking for.

Moderator Action: It is NOT the 'God' particle. It has nothing to do with 'God'. Stop calling it that. Damn it.

I would say that the Standard Model has received significant verification, but I would not say that the discovery of the Higgs boson means that the Standard Model is "correct"...

o god..
this is one reason I hate social media hahah

I'm so glad we finally found the God Particle. We have so many unanswered questions now that we've found the God Particle. Aren't you guys just so pleased now we've found the God Particle? All we need to do now is figure out if its the God Particle that is predicted by the Standard Model.

I don't give a fuck if you're a mod or not. There is nothing wrong with using a nickname. What right do you have just because you dislike something to edit people's posts?

In light of the god particle being found, I am now an avowed Christian Scientist.
