Title: choosing year 11 subjects
Post by: sjayne on July 24, 2012, 06:09:08 pm
We have to choose subjects for year 11 in a couple of days and if we want to do an advanced class even sooner. I'm having trouble choosing which subjects because I've got too many. So far I want to do methods and english. I'm  interested in; Japanese, Further 3/4, Biology, Chemistry, Literature, Psychology, History. :-[

I did general maths this year and we are supposed to do further next year and I really want to advance in Biology but I havn't done units 1/2.  I would rather do chemistry because I find it easier but I think I'll miss out on a lot by skipping 1/2 of chem. And we can drop English and do literature instead but I'm not sure.

After school I'm thinking of either becoming an author or a medical career in a hospital. I am so confused.

Anyone have any idea which subjects would be most useful or aren't worth doing? Thank you so much.

Pretty sure you can't do chem 3/4 if you skipped 1/2

I think you should consider what kind of career you are interested in when you pick your subjects.
It will be much easier to pick up bio 3/4 than chem, lots of people in my bio class have. If you are allowed to do 2 year 12 subjects in year 11 then maybe do further and bio?
And I would do Japanese, personal bias  ::)

If you are allowed to do two year 12 subjects next year, then I would. If not I probably wouldn't, however it all depends on your strengths and future goals :)

Do Bio and Further 3/4 in year 11
Then do english, chem, methods and literature. You would need chem for the medical career and literatur would be quite helpful for being an author.

thanks for your help everyone :) I've decided on math methods, literature, further 3/4, history 3/4 (only because I think it will be too hard to do the essays for lit and history in the same year) and i'm deciding between chem, bio and japanese  but I think I'll choice chem and jap.

but I think I'll miss out on a lot by skipping 1/2 of chem.

Why skip chem 1/2 in the first place?  ???

Skipping 1/2.. (as i've already mentioned) you may not be able to do 3/4 chem. Sjayne, if you need to do chemistry 3/4 than do 1/2, it's probably the most important of the sciences because it is the one that is a prerequisite for a lot of science courses.

I don't know if it's the most important of the sciences, but it is a prerequ. for quite a few science courses -like medicine :P

it was because my application to do advanced chem got knocked back for year 10 because my stupid school believed noone was allowed to do advanced chem yet for next year they have already allowed people to do it. and yeah chem is a prereq for  a lot of courses which is why i think ill maybe do that instead of bio even though what you learn in bio is also important

Nope, that's not true, there's no requirement to have done any 1/2 units in order to do the respective 3/4 units.

Yes but your teachers can steer you away from pursing chemistry 3/4. For instance, my school would not allow someone who did not do the chemistry 1/2 units to continue with 3/4. Hence why it is important to consult the school before immediately dropping chemistry 1/2

I have edited my post about having to do chemistry 1/2 that you quoted.

Even if the school did allow the student to pursue chem 3/4 without 1/2, it probably wouldn't be worth it because of the huge catchup which would be required.

Yep, you're right, teachers can stop you from doing it - however, I do agree with you, it will be a big catchup and all round it won't be worth it - but then and again, so would most subjects if you didn't do the required Year 11 subject.

even though we've done most of the year 11 chem this year our school wont let us do units 3/4 unless we've done unit 1 so im stuck with history.
