Title: Please! Answer my second plea.
Post by: sha0017 on August 14, 2012, 11:35:28 pm
Hello there, first of all I would like to apologize if I offend anyone -this is my second post in any given forum-. So here is my story as many may have read before. I have the dream of doing MBBS at monash under grad. Lets say it, it is impossible for me and I know it. How can I say that? Here is how, to begin with to even be considered a candidate you need an atar score of at the least of 90, a minimum of 92nd percentile of UMAT and do well in the interview. I have had a few hardships in the past 2 years unableing  me and creating gaps with many opportunities of learning. As English is not my native language and is about the sixth or seventh language I have learnt. I struggle with it a lot, I also believe I am disadvantaged by the teacher I have recieved this year displayed by his teaching and his marking, I do not believe I should be getting the decent and rarely high marks in english. Plus it was very foolish of me for not choosing a LOTE subject where I had a option of choosing 6 or 7 languages to choose from. I do these following subjects : English, Chemistry, Biology, Futher Maths, Methods and have done Health and human development with a raw of 27. Given the fact that I did not even study for 1 hour per day nor even keep up with work for HHD. I have gotten B for chemistry and biology for the mid-year exams this year. I am usually at the top of my bio class according to SACs and an average in chemistry. In English I am apparently near the top and in methods average and in further. I always have the ability to fluke an exam, I really don't know how but I have been doing this since 2009 I do not want to rely on this as it may not be reliable. I also work for 14 hours per week at my mother's shop for which I cannot reduce the time any more, and also procrastination is a very big enemy for me at home. I am unable to stay at school after school as my parent requires me to come home for my 2 younger brother's homework's sake. So what are my chances? I believe none for undergrad so what can I do now to get the most highest atar score able for me? Please if you can, lay a step by step layout of what I should do next. Please help me in this case, I am also willing to pay for tutors for exam over all mainly for english. So what should my next step be? And if you can please, make a attempt to 'predict' my study score for Chemistry and biology if you are able to. Given that over all I used to be a academic high achiever but those years ripped me apart, I believe I am decently smart and intelligent. I am thankful to you all who has read my plea. Thank You.  :'( :'( :'(

1) Stop relying on your ability to "fluke" an exam - it didn't really work for your midyears, given that you are ranked top in biology but only got a B+.
NOBODY can fluke an exam without studying.

2) Work on your procrastination issues. A good method is to promise yourself a reward if you work for just 10 minutes. Often you will find after 10 minutes that you've gotten into the flow of things and are able to keep going.

3) 14 hours a week of work isn't excessive. But it means you need to manage your time better. (See 2)

4) Don't get a tutor unless you are actually struggling with concepts. From what you've said, it just sounds like you have problems with time management rather than the content itself

I am sorry about that.  I will next time for sure.

Okay, so studying is planned out and so is my time table that I made up. Now what suggestion can you give me about English, how to improve on it and how can I at least try to get a decent score. Most of the advice my teacher gives is too basic and I do fix up on it, although at times he can't give me feed backs. I have already looked at many other essays done by people who are "Top" of the ladder -so many big words I get confused-. Thank You again.

Get a study buddy. Arrange what you guys do every week. Maths Monday's after school or other activities you guys can do together.

Studying with someone keeps you in check and you won't be as inclined to procrastinate as much.

I don't get it. You wanted to do MBBS at Monash realising it would be high 90's ATAR and UMAT Percentile, but you didn't want to work for it and try to 'fluke' exams?

Regardless, try to cut out distractions, whatever they may be. TV, games, Facebook if that's causing your immense procrastination. Once you start working, it's quite easy to keep the momentum going.

If you are worried about Monash's requirements, then would you consider doing it interstate? Since the requirements are lower
My friend got 78 percentile and an ATAR of 98.xx and got into JCU med.
