Who's going?
-
Yep, I'll be there :D
Interested in checking out the science facilities and just casually stroll around on the beautiful campus!
El, were you involved in anything? :)
-
Nah I wasn't haha.
I'll probably be there asking questions about various postgraduate pathways and if possible find any freebies (there's usually not much nowadays though)
What are the rest of you guys going to check out?
-
Is it this weekend?
...casually stroll around on the beautiful campus!
You classy fellow ^-^
-
Compare the campus to Menzies :P
Yep, this weekend, not sure the times but I'm guessing 10am-4pm
Yeah, Monash had a few generic freebies, RMIT had none, expecting some from Melb atleast!
-
Je suis alle ...
yeah im going!
-
Compare the campus to Menzies :P
Yeah, it was designed by a UoM grad, luckily UoM grads didn't exist when their first buildings went up so they don't look so... crap :P

Oh, that was a secret government-funded ploy to keep the second-rate kids in their place ;) I hear Menzies has great views at the top though
Last year, when I went, I vividly remember the Chemistry facilities at UoM being superb - go check them out if you have time
-
I'll be there to pick up some LGs. Also to obtain free items and miscellaneous material
-

I prefer the term: "underdogs".
But let's not turn this open day thread into a Monash vs UoM thread, UoM doesn't offer undergrad med, law, eng, pharm. Hence they lose.

Even I agree with this haha.

I'll be going =)
Mostly going for another reason though ;)

"let's not turn this open day thread into a Monash vs UoM thread" followed directly by an attack on UoM *raised eyebrow*
Anyway, i'm going to be there as a guide! Hopefully the weather won't be too bad, the forecast has a few showers happening, but if the weather holds out it will be a great day! Just get there as early as you can, grab a program and find the sessions you want to go to, alternatively, if you have specific questions don't bother with the general info sessions, go straight to the information hubs for each degree and talk to a person, the general course info session are usually useless for anyone that has done a little research.

+1 for guide! We shall have a SMASHING day!
Weather will be nice for Melbourne. The weather for last year was superb! We won't be getting any of that this year
but let's just hope it doesn't bucket down on us

Agreed on the general info session. Look at unimelb's website and you'll get the same info. Open days are generally not for course information, but for getting a "feel" for the place you could be spending the next 4+ years at. Make sure you feel 'at home,' as no rankings, prestige or even scholarship money (obviously varies depending on the amount) will make up for feeling out of place. Just a thought.
-
Kids, i you want freebies - definitely check out the spot building. Commerce is probably melb uni's biggest money spinner. ^.^
-
The anatomy museum is open to the public for this one day of the year, so if you're interested in that at all (even if you're not planning on a career in that field) come along. I am apparently volunteering there and it'll be pretty good.
Also lol@the desperate monash comparisons

Maybe you'll end up a surface anatomy body painting model :P
-
Nope, too smart for that, I managed to get out of that duty haha
I hate the body painting, that crayon takes forever to wash off >.<
-
I'll be there, looking forward to it!
-
i'm gonna be there. I'll see some atarnotes fellows :O :D
-
I'll be there :)
-
I'll be at home studying :D
-
Come to the maths building. We have cookies.
No really, we do. Cookies, biscuits, coffee and tea.
-
I'll be there tommorow as a guide around the Engineering buildings! Come say hi to me! (I'll probably be wearing a headband with a big bow on it :) :) :) )
-

Check out the underground spot lecture theatre. It's awesome.

Ah the math building. Do they still do the MIT challenge or any other events like that there? That was the only reason why I knew that place.
Very strange things occur there, for instance, here's a sample question: Dana and QC are both fanatical about Pokemon. Dana is a farmer of four legged Treenycorns. QC is a farmer of the spectacular Bibarel, which is also normally four legged. However, QC is a hard mistress and hacks off one leg from each Bibarel so she can sell them on the black market. If QC has twice as many Bibarel as Dana has Treenycorns, and there are 90 legs in total, how many Pokemon do they own in total?
-
When's the best time to get freebies guys?

1) The spot lecture halls are amazing
2) Treenycorn is not a Pokemon
3) Bidoofs are cooler than Bibarels
4) They are doing the maths challenge there tomorrow as far as I know
5) THE WEATHER HAS CHANGED TO MOSTLY CLOUDY TOMORROW! THANK YOU WEATHER GODS! hahaha

Was a very depressing day trying to find freebies ---> mission failed.
-
I also thought the medical presentations were a bit lacking. However, the campus is beautiful and the Royal Dental Hospital was fascinating! :D
-
The dental labs on Swanston are amazing and I am so jealous of them
-

Huh? A year 8 kid that I know told me he got balloons, UoM T shirt, water bottle, stress ball, pens and the cheap bag. Really? No freebies?
-
I lost my stress ball after throwing it too high in the air. :(
Also, I saw this little kid (he looked like he was in Year 7) crying because his parents wouldn't let him see the engineering faculty because they wanted him to do medicine. Poor kid.

Yo the commerce building and the law building is sickkkkk. But no freebies :(

This was the moment that stood out for me today:
From Monash Open Day in the med dep involving me and a curry mum and her yr9 (or so) son:
Me: So, why do you want to do med?
Yr9: Well, I'm not sure if I even want to do med, I'm also thinking about engineering
His Mum: No, tell him about how you want to study medicine? To become a doctor!
*Yr9 slowly backs away as his mum gives him a very sharp look*
awks.
:(
More of them :(
-
i dont mind biomed
from what i heard today, you can do the gamsat uk 1st yr, aus gamsat 2nd and 3rd year.
and you can manage to do study for it despite doing biomed i.e. workkload wise
so biomed is definitely an option for me.
and all set for colleges! Ormonds is sickkkkk
-
Workload of biomed is really not that bad. There may be a rather large rose tinted glasses effect in that statement but I never felt overwhelmed at any point
-

Nah that'd just be a waste of money.

By continents, yes, but more colloquially "Asian" refers to China, Japan, the Koreas, Viet, etc.

I got a $20 gift voucher to the book shop which was pretty cool. Loved the campus and facilities.

Ohh cool where'd you get it from?
I entered so many competitions, hope I get a surprising email saying that I Won sometime soon haha
There were heaps of freebies near the orange van on the side of the Albert Gilbert building. Pens, popcorn, lots and lots of lollies - I ate them all :D open day guides were very helpful too.
Regret not visiting the commerce building though. And the morning science session got packed so quickly so we didn't get to see it :(

Haha just make sure you know when the winners are announced and then unsubscribe from their mailing list or they'll just keep spamming your email account :P

A lot of the chemistry content covered is from chemistry 2 which is held in semester 2 of first year or in the summer holidays. I'd think that it would be easier to just go through the subject as opposed to teaching everything from yourself.
