Title: Burning out...
Post by: monkeywantsabanana on August 18, 2012, 03:35:20 pm
I know it's not exam revision period yet but I'm physically and mentally exhausted.

Anyone feel the same? Anyone not? How do I recover?

Definitely exhausted. I don't really think I'm burnt out. But I certainly feel like "90+? NAHHHHHHH. 70 COME AT ME BRO" if that answers your question.

yeahp.  need 85 for my course so im like, ehh..so im just coasting along
the need for motivation isn't there.. as it's not like I need to work extra hard

Yeah, I'm super exhausted too. I don't want to work and I feel like a 90 is impossible at
the moment. I try to motivate myself but it just doesn't work and then when I start studying,
I fall asleep within 30 minutes. I'm kind of thinking whether there is any point applying for uni
because I won't get into the course I want to and I can't imagine doing anything else.

My thoughts EXACTLY! Just last week I was asking people at my school if they felt this way ~ they told me to take a 'chill pill' and relax for a bit. I also found that when I started to study throughout last week, procrastination hit unduly, so instead of doing methods homework, I was aimlessly surfing the web with no real interest - I just wanted to pass the time.

How to recover? I believe I'm on track again due to...
a) heaping my stress onto my most trusted pressure board (my mum)
b) telling myself that I'm burning out, so that I freak out and start to do work. In grade 9, my teachers warned my parents this would happen if I'm not careful; I told myself I had to prove them wrong
c) instead of focusing on my 3/4 subjects, I did work on my 1/2's, so that I become "re-interested" in my 3/4 subjects after a few days (but since you're in year 12...this option is not exactly available :P Why don't you try reading the newspaper - you're still engaging your mind, and it helps with English)

Good luck - Just give yourself a rest for a bit :)

I'm not necessarily 'burning out' but I'm certainly struggling, all the same. And next week hasn't even started yet - when I have 5 sacs to complete in a week, compared to 0 this last week. It should be interesting.

I'm kind of the opposite. Having done very little work to date (barring for my chem midyear, for which I did heaps), I've got a lot left in the tank.

However, I was kind of over everything last week. What I did was spend a few days organising things in preparation for exams. First my iTunes library and then all of my Unit 3 notes for all subjects. Plan out how you're going to revise each subject, do some practice questions, etc. It's all about making the effort required for the rest of the year seem tangible and manageable.

^Trust me, when you get to uni, you'll burn out on SWOTVAC. Especially i you get a bad timetable (like, all exams on 1st week)

Just think about how you only have 3 months left of this bullshit then you will be free for 4 months or whatever it is!! Also take the rest of this weekend off, hell even take monday night off. After that you should be refreshed and ready to go. Also find your reason to succeed or achieve a certain ATAR, that will provide with some motivation.

We should all start serious exam study before the exam timetable is released for this exact reason.

This will never happen.

It's just that... I don't remember feeling like this last year. Lack of motivation, procrastination, apathetic... Thinking to my ultimate goal does give me some motivation for a short amount of time... then it all goes away. :(

Also, I'm not sure if I'm looking forward to uni or not... I'm sick of all this high school shit.

You have no idea. The amount of shit I have gone through this year, I just want it all to be over.

I havent burnt out, but I find myself watching atleast 1 ep of Suits per day to get myself re-motivated...I'm still trying to psych myself back into doing chem, because of midyear results :(

If you're aiming to be a high achiever in uni as well, it'll just get worse. Think of VCE as a warm-up to what you'll face in order to get the top marks in uni.

Kinda hard seeing that lecturers have a tendency to hand out a gazillion lab reports and assignments on week 11/12 and still go over new material... Was so tired after week 11/12 last sem that I lost motivation to study for the first half of my swotvac. Then panic upon realization that failing is possibility kicked in and I starting studying like mad.

Way too early is it not?

I think I might start beginning of September. Besides, we haven't covered all the content of the courses.

do some trial questions on chapters you've already completed so that you become familiar with the style of questions. Don't stress over not having finished the course yet. do what you can and come back to what you can't do yet once you've completed that stuff. However, save doing complete VCAA past papers for later [unless it's a maths - there are heaps you can find for maths and even if the course has changed slightly there are only a certain amount of different ways the can ask the same thing! :)]
good luck :)

that's because for methods you learn everything in year 11 and then year 12 is just going over it :) it's the same situation at my school. As there are hundreds of methods papers you can find and do :) That's the good thing about it! :D

Ok this is definitely not true. Or at least not at my school. I didn't know about 90% of the stuff that we've covered this year in Methods before we covered it.

Really? In my school we did pretty much everything in year 11! :) But then again, I'm at a private school so things may work a little differently than at your school :) I don't think there was very much new this year that we hadn't seen before. We just spend a bit more time on the topics than last year

haha  don't stress there's still plenty of time.
you don't want to completely deprive yourself of everything or you'll be more likely to burn out
everyone is different so naturally, everyone will be ready for trail papers at different times.
just do what you need to and don't stress :)

I'm massively feeling like this, it's especially coming from my results for the Physics and Chem exams.  I didn't do aswell as I'd hope to, but whatever, nothing I can do at this moment will change it.
I guess the massive hindrance for me finding the motivation for me to continue with my studies, it's gotten to the point where I've forgotten to submit work on time and rehgjkrehg.  Stressful!

But don't worry guys, ~10 weeks to go.
10 WEEKS! :D

Hey, don't worry I think everyone's feeling the same at the moment, i know i have - but remember that its only normal. I have come up with a number of solutions to combat this feeling of "burning out" and procrastination.

1. Think back to all the work you've put in this year and ask yourself if its worth dumping it all away
2. Revisit the "why's" - why do you want this? I suggest fantasizing about getting 90 + and imagine the great feeling that will concurr with the sucess
3. Remind yourself that its not about "being the best" but "giving YOUR best"
4. Humans have three basic needs: physical (diet and exercise), psychological (mental well-being) and social (having fun with people). Make sure that all these needs are met because if they're not, then doing well becomes a challenge. Make sure you have a good sleeping time (i sleep from 9:30 till 6:30 during the week and 10-7 during the weekend NO MATTER WHAT), good exercise (i walk to and from school and go gym for an hr every saturday) and a healthy social life. Contrary to popular belief, going out once or twice a month in year twelve is NOT the end of the world. As for psychological needs, try to meditate and think positive.
5. Procrastination is a killer. here's how i combat it:
- i physically write down and answer these three questions: = Where am i and what am i doing? (e.g. i am on my desk watching youtube videos to try to pass time.) What do i "want" to do? = I would love to write up some psych notes. How will I feel after doing it? = I will feel SOO proud of myself. By physically answering these questions, research shows that your procrastination is half way gone.
- Next i write down five things to do: e.g. unpack school books, open up psych book, write heading, highlight key notes, write down key notes. The key to getting ahead is first getting started.
- Finally i ask myself, do i want to watch a silly youtube video OR get a 90 + atar score?
- AlSO always try to reward yourself when you combat procrastination.

Honestly, you seem like a higly motivated individual - relax, chill a bit - do the things you LOVE and you'll be fine :) Wish you all the best!

If you are truly burnt out don't start trials , trust me, do something to calm down and get back on track then hit the trials, you will hit it harder than you would otherwise and if you fail one you won't drop even further (imagine burnt out + trials + other VCE stress + fail = ?).

Me too. I'm trying to tell myself to keep going because it is my last year but I'm so tired. It's getting so hard to motivate myself but I just know that if I don't put in the effort, I won't be happy.

Stress is too much for me that it left me to the decision of dropping one subject at this time of the year.
