Title: Likely moving to ANU for Ph.D.
Post by: Mao on August 20, 2012, 03:53:32 am
What do current ANU'ers think of the place? I don't have any specific questions, kinda just want to start a discussion on what things are like over there. =)

Well I was doing a PhD here, but now it's an MPhil (moving to Princeton for PhD), so if you have any PhD specific questions let me know. I guess have a read through some of the threads for stuff about accommodation. I take it this is for chem? I don't know anyone doing that unfortunately but I imagine it's quite like maths in that there's a large bunch of people who move to Canberra just for a PhD, so it wouldn't be hard to meet people and make friends as many others would be in the same boat.

I'm not too concerned about the academic part, I was looking for some comments about how life in Canberra is, such as nightlife, scenery, watering holes, that kind of stuff. Is it a nice place to live? Or will I get bored so bad that I'll have to drive to sydney every second weekend?

So staying away from the chemistry department, haha. I'm interested in their Appl. Math. department, which does a lot of very interesting chemical physics.

Re: everything you mentioned, it's not as good as Melbourne, but it's all enough to make one comfortable living there, and I at least certainly have a lot of fun.  Just make sure you make some friends and you're all set!

Nightlife is meh. There are a few nice places to drink as a later year student - University House, Tilley's, Wig & Pen, etc. But there isn't really that much on, for the most part. The scenery is great though - lots of great mountains to climb, lovely botanical gardens, many riding paths.

I think it's fine, but would recommend getting out over the summer. Canberra is dead in January, but if you're interested in getting involved in student life, clubs, events, etc. there's definitely stuff to do over the rest of the year.
