Post by: vashappenin on August 26, 2012, 06:23:02 pm
I need examples from the Rugmaker of Mazar-e-Sharif of Najaf and either:
- How his faith in God and enables him to be resilient
- Other examples of resilience in general, can relate to hope, his character, survival, etc.

Thanks in Advance! :D

Okay; that part where he gets the red pills and he says 'god provides' is one. I haven't read it in a while (its my study for context) but I remember there were a few references to faith when he was in the camp and at the very end.

Other examples of resilience:
Afgans are generally more resistant to war and violence to the constant exposure to it at a young age. That helped Najaf to deal with further violence in his life.
His hopeful attitude also keeps him going.

Sorry, this is all jumbled but I hope it helps.

My recollections, I hope it helps.

God: I don't have my novel with me now, but I know he made this reference somewhere. He was determined to remain positive in Afghanistan and in Woomera because he believed God had planned out his life and that every occurence was God's will. Knowing this, he was resilient because he knew God wouldn't abandon him.

Other: He noticed how little faith and resilience held by the other Afghan detainees were detrimental (had to be sent off to Sienna). So he tried to stay patient.
He states how his 'pride' was the 'last thing [he'd] ever give up' during his captivity in Afghanistan. With this, he was determined to resist the Taliban's whippings because he could not give up what he felt was of great importance.
