Title: Double Major + Medicine Pre-requisites Overloading
Post by: VivaTequila on September 22, 2012, 10:05:19 pm
Hey guys,

So basically, this is my study plan.

Basically want to major in Pharmacology, Medicinal Chemistry, and knock off my medicine pre-requisites while I'm at it.

I need to overload in 1st semester. Is it likely that they will allow this given my mix of subjects?

Alternatively, I need to do a summer subject covering one of the medicine pre-requisites. Is this preferable or is it better to overload:

Breakdown:

Medicine Pre-requisites Lvl 2
ANAT20006 Principles of Human Structure
PHYS20008 Human Physiology
BCMB20002 Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

PHRM - All of my pharmacology subjects - note that there is one pre-requisite subject to rule them all in Lvl 2 which is basically facilitating them - I can do a major in Pharmacology based on only one subject in 2nd year

CHEM - All of my chemistry subjects - note that there are 3 pre-requisite subjects, some taken concurrently, but all should be in good order

Russian - I can't miss a beat or I can't progress to the next one. They are only held once per semester (i.e. Russian 3 only runs 1st semester, with intended progression to Russian 4).

Before you ask, I'm taking Russian from bare minimum becoz despite being able to speak a lot of it, I have no idea how to spell and I don't understand any of the grammar. It's essentially just as hard as an EngLang subject, but the equivalent for my old, first and now forgotten language. It's fair assessment, I'm not rigging the system. Besides that, most of what I say in Russian is too colloquial and nobody over the age of 40 would understand me. It's good to finally learn it properly.

Do you guys rec taking a med pre-requisite subject in summer or overloading in 1st semester, and also what's the dealio with double majors? Will the university recognize it and print it as such on my degree at the end?

Med prereqs don't run in summer afaik and your major will not appear on your degree (like at all, not even your single major).

Just my perspective but I think doing a language AND overloading would be near impossible to get H1s across the board.

I would seriously consider swapping the breadth in semester 1 to a science elective so that you wouldn't overload.

But if you really want to do russian then I guess you'd have to overload.

youre not allowed to overload in first year - you ned to score a 75% average for your first year before they let you overload

EDIT: SORRY didnt realise you're in second year for 2013

It'll be in second year. My avg atm is 73, and I should bump it over that threshold for next semester with this semester's marks.

edit: lol posted this simultaneously with the edit. yeah.

Do you have spare subject slot left over from first year? As in have you only done 7 subjects this year? If not, you won't be able to do 5 subjects in first semester, and 4 subjects in the remaining because it puts you over 300 credit points. Unless you have a very good reason, and permission to do over 300 credit points, they will not let you. Also from memory, you have to pay full fee for that last subject over 300 CP's (unless that last subject needs to be completed for your major).

You can't do more than 300 points.  Taking all the med prereqs plus a language in one semester wouldn't be something I'd recommend but do what you want.

Hmm, I thought everyone who wanted to do medicine did it. Doesn't the GAMSAT run in the middle of the year, meaning that people take those med pre-requisites and use the knowledge in the GAMSAT after 1st semester?

The med prereqs aren't necessary for the GAMSAT (which runs in late March, not midyear), all you need for the GAMSAT is to know 1st year bio/chem/physics

Hoh sah-weet, that's good as! I'm actually pretty keen on that, I thought I was going to have to rote-learn three biology subjects for it.

You can still do med at deakin/monash/interstate somewhere without the 2nd year physiology/biochem/anatomy.

can you apply to more than 1 uni for grad med?

You can apply to all of them with the new changes.

I'm pretty sure he just means you can apply to a selection of all of them and his comment is badly phrased

what's the deal with it normally and what are people thinking has been suggested, and what in fact has actually been suggested but poorly worded?

I'm kinda outta the loop.

You can apply to 6 universities (preferences 1 to 6)
KP said you can apply to all of them, which afaik isn't true (you can apply to 6)
What he probably meant was that you can apply to any of them in your 6
