Post by: catwoman101 on October 11, 2012, 05:32:21 pm
when learning about the heart and lungs you learn that blood going to the lungs is high in co2 but where does it come from??

been a while, correct me if im wrong, but its the waste product from respiration taken from cells isnt it ?

The rest of your body? As blood travels through your body, oxygen is taken up by the tissues of your body and "exchanged" for CO2. In this way the blood carries oxygen to the tissues that need it (eg. everything, due to cellular respiration) and carries CO2 away from the tissues to avoid it building up.

I meant where does the co2 come from ?

Post the equation for cellular respiration

I'm pretty sure it comes from the cells after respiration and enters the blood.

If you were referring to the circulation, then it comes from the pulmonary artery.

If you want to know more about it and how/why exactly the blood carries CO2 look into the Bohr effect and the Oxygen-haemoglobin disassociation curve. This is not required for VCE however, it is just for your knowledge.

Watching videos 3-6 might help as well (http://www.khanacademy.org/science/biology/human-biology).
