Title: Cultural and technological evolution
Post by: radl223 on October 13, 2012, 10:11:48 pm
Hi guys,
I just wanted to clarify something - what EXACTLY is cultural and technological evolution (with examples)? I've been reading about it and I'm still unable to grasp the concept. So if we develop new genetic engineering techniques, would that be considered technological evolution, or cultural evolution since it is a new skill? Please help!!

Many thanks!!

The way I see it is, cultural evolution is a non-genetic way of transferring information. It includes things like burial ceremonies, speech articulation, painting, wearing clothes etc. Basically learning and teaching..
Technological evolution is mainly to do with technology..for example inventing stuff like making tools but it also includes things like domesticating animals and plants. It's more to do with controlling our environment.
I guess it's like making clothes is technological evolution but wearing them is cultural  :D
So developing new genetic engineering techniques would be technological. Hope this makes sense  ???

Honestly, i dont see it popping up in the exam, ever. Its only a paragraph or two in the book and its not even strictly biology (more sociology).

Guy above me was right though. Cultural is just how a particular culture and its norms change over time (ethics/whats right and wrong, religion, language, art, laws, etc). Technological is things like comming up with penicillin, the internet or guns.

ive actually seen it come up a few times in MC (i think neap) and also a define qn on vcaa mc

one was soemthing like
an early human skeleton was found buried with animals and artefacts, like stone stools
this is an example of
cultrual evolution
biological evolution
technologocal evolution
d.someother option

its A because the act of having a burial ritual with those things is a part of culture

i reckon its real interesting :)
rock on
