I'm looking to enroll into UniMelb next year, to do a bachelor of science. As I live over an hour away from the campus I'm heavily looking towards joining a college. From what I have heard, however, colleges can become a bit claustrophobic with the constant partying that is going on. I'm not really against parties, and they can definitely be fun, but I find them pretty exhausting after a while. So, some questions:
How much obligations are there to go to events, both obligations from the college itself and social obligations within the student body? I'm happy to go to some, but doing something every night seems a bit too full on.
Do you have time to do your own thing, such as your own hobbies, while in college?
Finally, any colleges that anyone can recommend from their own personal experiences?

The unimelb colleges, from what I gather, are particularly traditional with lots of events and stuff. I'm not sure if they can make them mandatory, but you should check them out individually, they'll probably have different expectations of students. Another thing you might want to consider is whether you'd prefer to live in a big and somewhat anonymous hall, or a smaller hall where you'll probably know everybody. It depends on what kind of introvert you are.
Living on residence, you definitely have time to do things outside but people don't seem to. It is a pretty insular environment, people seem to tend too want to do things for e residential and university community rather than the local community. Plus, there are so many activities available to people living in residence plus uni clubs also that their hobbies are pretty much well-catered for, unless they're quite obscure.
