Title: How do you feel after an Exam?
Post by: jazza97 on November 01, 2012, 02:30:58 pm
The title is self-explanatory, personally, when i come out of a writing based subject where you don't know whether what you have answered will be well-received, i tend to feel quite shit and go over everything i didn't include.

For example, today i wrote 6.5, 5 and 5.5 pages but i keep worrying that i didn't include enough+i forgot to include a really good outside source for  context.

I know you can't change the past, but it is interesting to see the different emotions and reactions when an exam is over.

Generally I like to have a small discussion about it so I know what type of grade to expect and then move on and hope for the best. Worrying isn't going to help at all imo :)

For me it's stages.

1. Go out of the exam room (hopefully early)
2. Walk home
3. Look at my workbooks to see if i have made any mistakes and then think to myself if I have why the heck I left the exam room early.

4. Think to myself "now what do I do now that i'm free"

I'm pretty sure you'll do fine. I'm pretty sure all in the '_azza##' series will do fine.

After exams I usually don't feel much to be honest.

Well today's exam: Wrote about 3 pages, only a one full essay the rest were half intro's. My essay was really shit, no real good evidence or any quotes and I couldn't explain myself. How I felt during like absolute shit and wanted to commit suicide. Walked outside of the exam and got there as fast as I could to avoid everyone and in doing so I broke down into tears, I was so guttered and disappointed, never felt this low in my life

Have you been writing about 3 pages during doing your practice exams in that same time frame? Or was this just a 'one off'?

It was more of a one off

Normally okay. Terrible today. Broke down crying as soon as I finished, never written worse essays in my life :( so disappointing when I've put in so much work over the past few years and always been an A/A+ student. If I get a 4, 8 and 6 for the exam with A and A for GA1 + GA2, any idea what I'm looking at?

Guys please don't get preoccupied with thinking about how you went on the English exam. You guys still have the potential to do great if you focus on your other exams :)

Plus it's a bit premature to despair when you don't know for certain what you've got. Many people (including myself) have the tendency to be harsher on themselves after an exam than the examiner is. Not that I'm doing English or anything, but still, there is a chance you've done better than you're giving yourself credit for.
(That being said, I'll possibly have to try to stop myself doing the same thing next week if I'm unhappy with lit...)

Think about what you did well! That's the great thing about 'writing subjects', the examiners will focus on what you did right, not what you did wrong. This is what'll stand out, after all.

But in my situation, I am 100% sure there's nothing at all great with my essay it was horrible I'd be lucky to walk away with a 2/10

Take it from someone who goes through your exact reaction after most essays, you did not get a 2/10. I know it's hard to believe but there will definitely have been positives about your writing, be it the articulation or the ideas themselves. Especially if you didn't write much perhaps you did that little bit very well?

And most importantly, there are more exams to come which are just waiting for you to blitz them (:

Feeling quite good, wrote more for TR than I ever did before - 7 pages
Didn't do so great on Context I think
LA was alright, now after the exam I know how I could've included the visuals much better

Nonetheless some people on AN have already sealed in a 50 for English. Maybe they are reading this now.

I'm sure you did okay  :)

Looking at your 2011 study score for HHD, I'm certain that you're a very hard worker and you would have done great! Head Up!!!  ;D ;D

I highly doubt it, I am telling my piece is much worse that of a practice essay I've written. If I  am wrong, I better hope for magical miracle something out of this world to bring any hope to study score for English otherwise I am looking around towards 10-15. I have given up on the whole studying thing because I know for sure I won't make university so it makes almost pointless to study.

English isn't the be it end all mate! This should be more the reason for you to study harder. You said your parents would be disappointed in you if you got a low ATAR, I'd say they'd be disappointed if you didn't try. You've got enough time to study for the next few exams so I say keep studying!

Also, I've told you before, read this Calling it quits on VCE and read it again.

Study hard for your upcoming exams, your efforts will pay off. Don't end up regretting your decision quit studying for your exams. Also, I think you're underestimating the effect of small improvements. These improvements can yield amazing results..

I'll leave you with this quote... "Try and fail, but don't fail to try."

Go on, study and amaze yourself at the abilities you thought you never had   :) ... Again, Head Up   ;D ;D ;D ;D

(Even if you don't want to study, you better study because otherwise I wasted 10 minutes writing this HAHAHAHA)

Kesh is right Dejan, you may as well give it your all.

Imagine this:

Scenario A: Give up after english exam, get C+s for the rest of the exams------> Atar below required first preference

Scenario B: Momentarily give up after english exam, get B+s/As for rest of exams----> Atar 1 point below required clearly in for first preference, but then get a second round offer.  OR You just get above the clearly in, now I bet you're thinking that you're glad you did good on the ____ (fill in the blank) exam, to get you that .15

You may as well try your hardest!!

I completely agree with this, you never want to deny yourself opportunities, sure you might have screwed up one exam and sure that might be a setback, but the truth is, if you never try, you never know, weirder things have happened and it wouldn't be the first time someone comes back from a bad first exam.

Like the analogy I always use, if you have 7 hours to drive from Melbourne to Sydney, you know your chances of making it are slim, but if you stay in Melbourne and say "it'd be really nice to go to Sydney, I wish I could get there but I just have no hope of getting there in 7 hours", guess what - you'll never get to Sydney, if you just say "I know the chance is slim, but when there's hope, there's a way" and you actually get in your car and drive, who knows, you have a chance.

Well English is a pre requisite so it is like kinda the end in a way... It should  and definitely will. They would be very disappointed with today's results I didn't tell them, I couldn't of. Well I got 5 days of good study to cover 3 exams so I'll give my best, you're right  probably will regret not studying so I will just study to prevent future regrets and try to amaze myself haha. Thank you so much guys for the motivation I mean it has been a sad day for me where I cried throughout the day due to my own failure to reach 25 study score and disappointing those who had supported me :)

All of the plan you made at the start of the year all crashing down. You starting to realise that nothing come true, that's there no fairy tale, that's there is no good or evil except you and the giants.

At the start you might feel that there's nothing to worry and it start to slowly eat you up, say that you're worthless, and you start to believe it.

You start to question yourself and blame everything you can think of (yourself, your parent, your situation, your background, your living status, your life) how you should have listened to everyone's advice at the start of the year.

Reality start to hits you and you've nothing left to defense. Giving up is your friend and shame is your go-to guy.

Haha OMG for you guys who are worrying your butts off over how you did on the English exam, let me just say I was in your situation last year too! I loveeed English in year 12 and still do but the English exam and my feelings and performance on the day of that exam were just sooo disappointing...I mean, I don't know what got into me! Eventually I was tearing up trying to use the 15 mins I had to write up my entire context piece and I know looking back at it now I'm thinking "haha why would you get yourself so worked up about it?" but it really really mattered to me back then because I know how much I (and any year 12 actually) puts into English :( No time to proofread, almost 2 page page context speech and a possibly wrong language analysis contention - I was literally so disappointed and angry with myself and I couldn't think straight until the Sunday following the exam (after my mum consoled me - haha such a baby I know!). My initial English aim hadn't been that high (like 35 raw) but you guys, I can't even explain how badly I thought I'd performed on that exam - all I could think was "omg there goes everything". The point is, my next 2 exams after english (psych and HHD) saved me like you wouldn't imagine. They gave me the boost I needed to get my first pref. What I'm trying to say here to those of you who feel like you didn't give it your all in the exam is: I know you worked your butt off for English and I know you must be so disheartened at how one day's performance on the English exam reversed all your hard efforts on English sacs throughout the year. But trust me, IT'S NOT THE END. If you don't give up hope, I promise you you will reap the efforts of your hard work. And I'm not just saying this as some inspirational cliche, I'm saying it from experience. Looking back, I am SO EXTREMELY GLAD that I didn't let my performance on the English exam let me down and that I didn't let it affect how I approached my other subjects exams because if I did, then who knows how things might've turned out? Make up as many unrealistic scenarios about the ATAR and what not and worry your ass off about how you performed on exams but DO THIS AFTER YOU'VE FINISHED ALL YOUR EXAMS. At least then it won't affect your actual exam performance on other subjects. VCE isn't over until your last exam and your chance at the atar you want isn't dashed until your last exam - English is a main subject, YES, but it's not the only subject. In the end, despite my constant worrying about my woeful English exam experience, I didn't do as bad as I thought and I'm telling you guys that this will be the case for you as well because we tend to be very self-critical and underestimate ourselves too much sometimes :) So please please please don't stress yourself about this, let it go for now until your exams are over. I don't think this is extremely related to the topic, but I thought I'd post it anyway seeing as many of you have only had the English exam and your second or third exams are coming up in the next week. PLEASE Don't let one exam get you down or stop you from getting the atar you want - there's still hope! :D I wish you all the very best with the rest of your exams and I really really hope you guys all get the amazing scores you well and truly deserve because you're all such a hard-working and great bunch of students! :) <3

That's crazy! I wish I could get a 39 from that in the exam! Was nice to hear a success story though. :D

After an exam I just feel like I want to talk about it. As much as people say to "avoid those who talk about all the questions", I just like knowing and I find it fun to talk about the different answers people give and compare them to mine.
