Title: pe exam!!!
Post by: michak on November 04, 2012, 07:25:51 pm
How is everyone coming along with their studies?  :P

These practice exams are starting to kill me, how are you guys studying for the exam?

Are you just revising notes?

I just want the exam to be over with!

I've done all the old VCAA papers (beside 2011, doing that tomorrow), a fair few company papers, checkpoints and almost finished study on questions. I'm so over PE!

How are you going?
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: michak on November 04, 2012, 08:09:33 pm
Yeah have done all the VCAA papers including last years, any other papers I got my hands on and the whole checkpoints book.
I'm just so bored with doing exams I'm trying to find another way to study

What do you think the exam will be like this?
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: ldee on November 04, 2012, 08:20:00 pm
Good stuff!

I have a feeling it will be a pretty hard exam, you often find that the second year of the study design is one of the harder ones for the period. You never know with PE though, there so much content that anything could be covered really, but I have a feeling there might be an extended type question (5-6 marks) on LIP, since it's always been poorly done.

Any thoughts, or suggestions on what you think should be focused on?
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: michak on November 04, 2012, 08:24:22 pm
Yeah seems like LIP should really be studyed, cause every year VCAA says pretty much everyone gets it wrong.
There are 4 mark questions on last years exam which really made me think though, so who knows.

May also be another interplay question cause i don't think there was a long one last year.   :)
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: ldee on November 04, 2012, 08:29:50 pm
Yeah minimal people get full marks for the LIP questions. Yeah you just never know.

That's true, the interplay questions are easy marks in my opinion so I hope so :)

Just a question, have you learnt fitness testing norms? It would be a harsh move on VCAAs behalf if they examined them, but you never know so I'm not sure if it would be worth learning them.
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: michak on November 04, 2012, 08:33:39 pm
I was going to but then realised there are so many, and they are different for boys and girls!!!!!!!!!

I did go to the engage education though and the lady said to at least know the VO2 max scores for elite people

Just random but how have you been going in your exams, mark wise?
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: ldee on November 04, 2012, 08:49:37 pm
Yeah it's ridiculous! Haha I was at Engage too :)

Well I've been marking them myself so I'm not sure how accurate I've been, but I've almost never given full marks for something worth more than 3 marks.. Sometimes I just take marks off randomly because you never know what assessors might mark wrong.. But anyway, um mostly around 92%. Although I must say that when I sit VCAA papers I've already seen a fair few of the questions through study on and checkpoints, but that's to be expected and will hopefully aid in the actual exam.

How about you?
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: michak on November 04, 2012, 08:53:45 pm
Yeah about the same.
I do the same thing by taking marks off so i just get my teacher to mark it from now on hahaha
If its possible i recommended going over last years paper with your teacher when you are done, really help me a lot.

Well hopefully the A+ cut off this year was like last years, 77%. :P
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: ldee on November 04, 2012, 08:57:27 pm
Haha that would be good, but my teacher is in America right now! Oh well, I'll be okay I hope!

Yeah it's been even lower for some years! Apparently some years people have gotten 50s with 90%, sometimes lower  ??? PE is a strange subject haha.

How were your sac marks for the year?
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: michak on November 04, 2012, 09:01:40 pm
Sounds like my english who decided to take a holiday just before the exam. :(
Well i'm rank 1 in a medium cohort. SACS i think are above 90% i think but we aren't told our exact scores.
I did stuff up one SAC though so wasn't happy about that

What about you? What are you aiming for in the exam? :)
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: ldee on November 04, 2012, 09:13:21 pm
That would suck for a subject like English!

Oh nice work! Yeah I'm rank 1 too. I'm not sure how you'd define my cohort, just average I suppose. I was 198/200 for the year overall, so I'm hoping they will scale to full! Second in the cohort is 193 i think, with a fair few in the 180-190 range. In all honesty, I'm not sure how our sacs would compare to other schools so my score might not be an accurate reflection of my ability   :-\

But in the exam, just as high as possible I suppose, I have no idea what score will correlate to what study score so don't really have a set aim. Yourself?
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: michak on November 04, 2012, 09:14:52 pm
I would be very unhappy with myself if a lost say more than 8-10 marks.
I really need to do well in this subject cause i have slacked off big time in others :P
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: ldee on November 04, 2012, 09:20:21 pm
You'd be looking at a very good study score with that result :) yeah me too, basically my whole atar rests on PE.

What are you going to do for revision of the next 2 days?
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: michak on November 04, 2012, 09:22:35 pm
A couple more of exams that i was able to get a hold of and probs just read over my notes.

Also just trying to figure out why I keep on making silly mistakes and how to prevent them, really starting to annoy me.

Yourself?

Post by: ldee on November 04, 2012, 09:27:17 pm
Yeah me too, for some reason my mind will always lapse on certain things. Hopefully it won't happen in the real thin!

Same for me pretty much, that's all really to do now. If there is anything you have/ find that you are unclear about or want to discuss, feel free to post it here as I'm sure it will be beneficial for the both of us!

Actually i do have a question :)

In regards to meausring sedentary behaviour i know we can use an inclinometer or use a diary but is there anythig else we need to know? Thanks
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: ldee on November 04, 2012, 10:10:00 pm
In regards to the guidelines, I think you'd be best to use a log, survey or other recall instrument because the guidelines specify the type of sedentary behaviour. A lot of people think it's just "no more than 2 hours of sedentary behaviour", but you have to remember that it's " no more than 2 hours of electronic media that isn't for educational purposes". So you need to use a measure that provides a reading of context. But you're right in saying an inclonometre can be used too, if just for sedentary behaviour that isn't specific to the guidelines.

What are you guys aiming for study score wise?

I'd be content with anything over 43.
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: michak on November 04, 2012, 10:50:12 pm
I would love to get 45 considering all the work I have done

But will be happy with anything over 40 :)

Hopefully you can get what you want!!!!
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: ldee on November 04, 2012, 10:54:24 pm
I'm aiming for a 47, more realistically a 45, and even more realistically a 43 haha. But I really want a 45 at least, considering the work I've put in.
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: michak on November 04, 2012, 10:56:18 pm
What do you need to get SAC and exam wise to get above 45?
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: ldee on November 04, 2012, 10:59:04 pm
There was a student at my school last year who had about 94/100 each unit for sacs (not rank 1) and a mid A+ (maybe 85%?) on the exam and got 45.
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: michak on November 04, 2012, 10:59:54 pm
That seems slightly achievable i guess :)
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: Nobby on November 04, 2012, 11:10:05 pm
What do you struggle with most on exams and stuff?
I just can't seem to explain stuff the way I'd like.
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: ldee on November 04, 2012, 11:20:02 pm
I'm the same as you. But with the extended type questions, I'm quite sure VCAA aren't concerned with us giving essay-like responses. If you need to, just dot point the relevant information, and that way they will clearly be able to determine what it is you're trying to say.

Specifics though, I think I'm pretty good with the content. Sometimes I just have lapses in smaller things, like the side effects of some of the lesser known drugs, but they only really appear on company papers. I think VCAA will only test us (extensively) on the well known drugs, like steroids, EPO, diuretics etc.

I just can't seem to explain stuff the way I'd like.

Mainly working out what is the more appropriate technique to like increase or decrease arousal/comcentration taht kind of stuff
I always go with the answer which is write and may get me 1 or 2 marks but another answer is better
Also sometimes forget to apply my knowledge to the question and just give more of a generic answer

what are you having trouble with explaining? maybe i can help :)

idee: VCAA barely puts stuff on illegal drugs and WADA and stuff so maybe this year it may change :) that stuff isn't too hard though so thats good

I dunno, I can't really explain it (how ironic). A lot of it is just knowing when to stop going on about causes and effects, like when an explanation is sufficient (e.g. do I need to justify why greater oxygen availability to working muscles is good, or is just stating that enough).

That's true. I think WADA/ASADA were new to the study design last year, so it's likely we will be tested on one of: reasons why substances/methods are banned, rational for the code, types of offences, role of ASADA..

Btw, does anybody know if ADAMS is part of the course?

e.g. do I need to justify why greater oxygen availability to working muscles is good, or is just stating that enough).
This! I do this every time I'm explaining something. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what VCAA want in this regard. But if it was a two mark question, I doubt they would expect you to discuss it in depth. You could go into the depth to be safe, but the problem with that is you may say something incorrect, and although the end part of the answer is right, they cannot award full marks. It's a tough one  :-\

Yeah we just need to know that it is one of WADAs roles - to know the whereabouts of athletes

Hey guys :)
I did the VCAA 2011 exam a couple of days ago and I just wanted to see how hard or easy you thought the exam was? Thanks
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: ldee on November 05, 2012, 10:07:05 pm
Did it this morning, so fresh in my mind. I thought it was a little easier than the 2010 exam, but had some interesting questions to say the least. Like 7 marks comparing pedometers, accelerometers and recall? That just seems to me like the were stuck for questions to ask :P
But overall, I think I lost some marks on comparing and contrasting IV vs oral hydration and the last question. Also, a few of my explanations were poorly worded such as the interplay question, the stupid question above and some of the smaller ones, so marks would've been lost there.

How did you find it?
Title: Re: pe exam!!!

I always have trouble remembering Chronic adaptations - hopefully the VCAA don't focus on this area a lot :/
Title: Re: pe exam!!!
Post by: michak on November 05, 2012, 10:14:31 pm
That 7 mark question about the pedometers, accelerometers and recall i thought was a really easy 7 marks.
Overall I thought it was pretty good, just got a bit stumped about how to word some of the answers to the last couple of questions on LIP.
I only lost 6 marks but i wanted to see how easy or hard my teacher was marking, even though he did mark with the answers

How did you go overall?

I always have trouble remembering Chronic adaptations - hopefully the VCAA don't focus on this area a lot :/

What do you exactly have trouble with? you can usually remember the same acute and chronic adapatations
You really just need to know 2 or 3 for each muscular (aerobic and anaerobic), respiratory (only aerobic) and cardiovascular (aerobic and anaerobic)

That's true, I just need to be more careful with my explanations in those longer marked questions

Overall I thought it was pretty good, just got a bit stumped about how to word some of the answers to the last couple of questions on LIP.

Yeah my wording for the last question was probably a bit off. I said had the same points as the assesment report but I'm just not sure about how I strung it together. What is your teachers stance on dot points? Do they think they are acceptable?

And overall, I was 7 marks off. This was after going through and marking, then deducting I think 2 to account for what the assessors may or may not have paid.

That's right. Just think about what changes at the onset of exercise, and how your body could adapt to make this process / performance more efficient.

My teacher says to use dot points, that they make sure that you are being as exact as possible and arent writing too much.
I tried this though but it didn't work, I jsut ended up writing whole sentences anyway

Oh okay, well that's good then.

So I have a question. How would you describe the benefits of a beach/pool session for recovery? Some of the books are somewhat contradictory, and a classmate and I were discussing it earlier. Let's say you were asked, for 4 marks "What are the benefits to recovery for a football player completing a beach session post exercise?"

Submersion of the body in water causes a pressure differential that conceives a compressive force. This force, like compression garments, helps increase venous return and accelerate removal of metabolic wastes. Beach sessions amplify this effect because of the greater density of salt water compared to pool water.
Beach sessions can also be a form of cryotherapy, decreasing blood flow to haemorrhaged tissue, reducing blood loss and oedema. These types of sessions can also be a valuable method of team bonding.

Well usually teams will use such sessions with cold water, not hot.
The benefits include - the hydrostatic pressure that is formed because of the upward and downward force on the body, this then allows for an increase in blood circulation around the body which means wastes can be removed and nutrients and oxygen to the muscles.
Also if done with strecthing whilst in the water can help to reduce the impact of DOMS and swelling to areas

Thats all i can remember at the moment hope that helps!!  :P

Nobby beat me to it  :P :P
