any suggestions of content of such an essay

Possibly:
Discuss sounds (phonology, IPA)
How the letters are used (in terms of morphology, lexicon, semantics)
-

how each letter carries different phonetics and when combined together as phonemes can vary greatly. take -ough:

You could perhaps discuss the role of the alphabet in orthography, and how non-standard uses can suggest certain characteristics of the user. If you wanted, you could also talk about the use of letters as symbols, and how phonemes/letters can embody their own meaning (so go into semantics) when used in specific contexts.
