Title: [UoM] 2012 Semester 2 Results Thread
Post by: Hancock on November 23, 2012, 07:10:21 pm
Hey peeps,

Now that results are starting to trickle in (mostly for the first years), I thought we should establish a central thread like last semester. I've only got one back, but I'm pretty stoked since I thought I was going to get much lower.

CHEM10003 - Chemistry 1
Passed
2012, Semester 2, Parkville, On Campus, Semester 2
Mark: 95 Grade: First Class Honours (H1)

How did everyone else go?

2012, Semester 2, Parkville, On Campus, Semester 2
Mark: 82 Grade: First Class Honours (H1)

Biol10005 - Genetics & The Evolution of Life

It's a second class honours, that's really good. Why did you do Chem 1 this semester if you didn't want to do Chem 2 in summer?

Thought I might have to for Vet Science, but decided to go into a Zoology/Genetics major instead. :)

FYI: Uni isn't like high school, a 72 is actually a reputable mark. Congratulations on your marks guys. The mark I have to know, is what I got for string theory.

W00T! I passed chemistry 2 (miraculously!). I was already amending my study plan to exclude biochemistry & molecular biology as I was under the impression I'd failed abysmally. All semester I had the worst luck during pracs (kept having my synthesis experiments go inexplicably wrong) and almost fainted twice, failed the midsemester test quite badly and didn't expect to do well in the exam at all because I was running on two days of no sleep. All in all I was happy there :)
Biology was in the honours range, as expected, but had I done slightly better on the midsem and actually bothered with ILT's I would have gotten a grade higher (VERY close to a higher grade).

Haha, that's nice of you to say that, made me feel better.. However I'm hoping to go on exchange so a higher grade so that I could be more competitive would have been nice.. Nonetheless I'm happy with it. :)

Those first two are awesome VT and correct me if I'm wrong but aren't you like 1 mark off the cutoff for a higher grade at UoM? That would be incredibly unfortunate :P

This thread has me so motivated to get into uni and try to do half as well as everyone here. Unfortunately I can tell that this attitude will almost definitely not last :P Good work guys!

Something that's really irritating, is that probability/statistics and hence stochastic modelling, are very useful areas of maths that I have no experience in. Something I would have loved to pursue, is mathematical biology. Mathematical Biology is a great field of maths, since it is a new interesting field, and you get to look at problems that will be useful in the real world. If you have the opportunity to pursue stochastic modelling, I'd take it.

Man, some of you guys are freaks. Do you guys have jobs or a social life? Not to sound rude or anything, just curious. I don't think I could get those kind of marks unless I had no job or friends TBH. In any case, I passed Engineering Maths (56) and got a H1 in Music and Health (didn't watch or attend a single lecture, so if you want an easy level 2 breadth GET ON IT)  so far.

Surprisingly, good marks come from studying 'smart' and having a balance. Seeing high school mates twice a week, along with my girlfriend of 2.5 years is a necessity. Going to the gym 3 times a week and playing on my squash team with said mates once a week is also extremely cathartic. You have to make sure you can see through the 'bullshit' that the course teaches and study the stuff that is actually important in terms of assessment. I believe that is truly how you get good marks at university.

Or you could study 12 hours a day everyday. Either or.  :P

I agree with you Hancock. Something I NEED to do, is to go to the gym. Not only will I become healthier, but I'll be able to leave anything that's irritating me in-terms of study at the desk, do a workout, and look at it with fresh eyes. There's people in my new office who go to the gym weekly, and I think it's the best thing for me.

This is a really hard question to answer objectively, it's all relative. People often have selective memory, or try to downplay their own effort. I personally have a job, but around exam time my social life is probably lacking by some standards. Luckily I have fairly understanding friends, and a girlfriend who is currently in China. I would say I'm in "intense study mode" for about 16 weeks of the year, which is nothing in the scheme of things. It also means that I have money to spend on international travel during the breaks.

I was thinking along those lines.
I am about to embark on the second year MAST20004/MAST20006 quinella, so it seems stochastic modelling would fit in nicely immediately following.

btw quantumJG, I reckon that even Gauss would have found your second semester subjects challenging :)

I don't think it's impossible to have a job, play sport, have a social life AND get good marks.
Maybe not in every subject, but certainly in 1 or 2 that you have a passion for.

Note that most of the posters to date are maths lovers. This makes all the difference.
There is no such thing as too much maths, my friend :)

Try being independent and getting good marks. That shit's hard. I like to think I have a fairly balanced social life - I'd go out with friends 2 or 3 times a week after uni if I'm not working and I'd socialise a fair bit over the weekend. Not to mention my friends are constantly crashing on my floor. It's really not hard to get good marks WITHOUT studying - so long as you rock lectures, you already will have a very good grasp on the material. I wouldn't have put in over 50 hours of study all up this semester and I've managed a H2B, H2A and a H1.

I'll change that for next semester though, but then again, I said I would for this semester too.

I can completely understand where you are coming from and I really think the answer you are looking for is simply - go to lectures and make an effort. Studying is only part of the picture.

Depends on the person. If you have the luxury of being able to without forgoing sleep, then go for it. If you can't be fucked, that's fine too. Just understand where it places you - why are you going to uni, and what do the grades matter for that cause? It's entirely up to the person.

How about an hour or two of revision a night? Too much? Not enough?

Of revision itself an hour or two a night consistently is quite dense (remember this is revision, not including the assignments, if you do practicals you may have pre and post practical tests, ILTs, assuming you pick Chemistry you will have CHEMCALs and have to read the practical before the class for every subject you do with practicals, it doesn't include getting used to the system, or depending on the course/subject other features, printing out lecture material etc. I don't know if pre-reading classifies as revision, but I don't think so too).
There's no set time, it's if you have time left over you do revision. Because as University students you still have to 'have a life' - socialise, join groups, make friends and so forth. Luckily the tutorials, lectures and practicals* provide revision streams. There is a lot of room for revision during the last few lectures for some subjects where they do revision lectures (out of normal class time), or even spend the last few lectures of the course reviewing, mid-semester break, SWOTVAC, weekends, when you don't have practicals, or when you've covered all the material in the lectures and tutorials and practicals in general. The tests throughout the year or weekly quizzes make sure you learn the material anyway, and many are identical to the exam, so once you've done those tests, in the future it's quick to revise them.

Regarding the practicals it is arguable that only some subjects try to make the practicals directly related to the course.

MAST30001 - Stochastic Modelling

Gloamglozer,

I got this one in my sights.
Interesting?
(from a Commerce/Maths Breadth perspective)

It is a very, very useful subject - something that no one can disagree with.  Having said that, there are masters students who have had to come back and do the subject because they didn't do it in their undergraduate degree.

Although it is useful, it is definitely not a walk in the park.  It's going to challenge you and possibly push you.  the tutorial questions are not easy either because they are not like normal subjects where the first few questions of the tute are easy and you can smash them out if you understand the concept.  Then the next few you will be required to think a little harder to get the answer.  With Stochastic Modelling, the first question could already be difficult and if you could end up spending the whole hour just doing the first question.

Congrats on these amazing marks guys.

Anyone one know the proportion for how many students maintain or average consistent H1s?
And is the dean's list annually calculated for the subjects taken that specific year for 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students?

You have just sold Stochastic Modelling to me, Gloamglozer.
I was looking for something interesting as a level-3 maths breadth.
It's been pretty much all Calculus for me up to this point, and let's face it, I have been taught 561 different ways to solve differential equations already :)

Cheers.

I cannot say I had a fixed study regime. Philosophy and political theory (do not care a bit for institutions and their roles though, hence my dislike of INTS) are both interests of mine; I read books outside of the course in my leisure and tend to debate philosophy and politics at my college (yes, I am that guy). I tend just to do a skim of the readings, jot down about 10-15 short points (for example, "feminism = challenge masculine citizen archetype'", "Kant's CI is _______" etcetera) about the reading and take that to class with me to discuss. Scotch (in moderation and if of age), late night walks and coffee are all good for the soul when you get too caught up in philosophy. It is important to have comrades to annoy with your musings as I stand by the view of philosophical and political learning to be a communal thing.

Do what you are passionate about and spend time with people with your passion.

I was sort of wishing my INTS was 85 for the novelty of the numbers.

Introductory Econometrics - 63 (FML sideways)
Business Finance - 79
Accounting Processes and Analysis - 79
Intermediate Macroeconomics - 80

And I have just f----d over my chances for an ivy league exchange folks.

WOO! Biggest sigh of relief, got that H1 combo :)  After the nightmare that was HSF, I still can't believe I survived. It was by far the hardest subject I've ever done at uni to date, partially due to the poor teaching/organisation of some of the teaching staff. But it's all over now :D

Just a question - I received my final result on the study plan and it said this when I clicked for more details:

Version: 1 Attempt: 1 Type: Option Credit Points: 12.5
Study Basis: Credit Study Type: Coursework Level: 0
Structured Study Package: BA-BREADTHL123 - Breadth Level 1, 2 & 3 Subjects, Version: 1, Attempt 2

I am confused about the "Attempt 2" part because that was my first attempt at the subject, plus I passed. Should I be contacting the student centre about this?

Thanks, Mech - I'll get onto that. Considering my enrolment record only shows that I've enrolled in the subject once, it must be some silly error.

Making my first post in a while...

After getting consistent H2As last semester all within 2 marks of each other, my marks this semester ranged from 69 to 93, with the 93 was obtained in bizarre circumstances. Considering I'm a compulsive crammer who spends more time during semester eating free sausages at various uni bbqs than revising, and I tutor as well as work in a bar, I'm pretty happy.

This year, I've done generally better in more difficult subjects - probably because I take them more seriously   ;)

Yay~~ Happy overall :) Passed everything with mostly H2s and the barest of bare passes in chemistry (my weakest subject). I really need to put more effort into doing ILTs and double checking assignment referencing/doing more thorough typo checks but I'm only first year so I still have time to improve.

ECON10002 Macroeconomics 85 H1
ENGxxxx Academic English 1 80 H1

Didn't like APA much.. and the group assignment that worth 35% was a nightmare.
Macro was interesting but I stuffed up the exam with my  messy graphs with pencils that were hard to erase.
With IFA, I lost 10 marks for mid-year test and tute participation, could have done better.
And with English... no common.

When I did Physics 2, I attended almost none of Roger's lectures, got 4/31 on the 1st mid-sem assignment (due to super tough questions and the online assignment tool misinterpreting my answers) and still scraped a H1.
