Title: Gricean maxims
Post by: Damo17 on June 04, 2009, 09:08:27 pm
In this in the EL course? Are we able to discuss these when analysing texts if we have very good examples from the text to support these breaches?

The breaking of any of these four maxims are examples of non-standard language, right?

Grice's maxims are part of the course, under discourse analysis i think.
I remember the lecturer saying that you have to be wary when you discuss it though.

Thanks,
Yeah, I thought I would ask since I could not find it in the study design.

What do you mean by "be wary when you discuss it"? Examples of these situations?

I think he meant that even if someone breaks the maxims, it doesn't mean it's disorderly.

So it really depends on whether by breaking a maxim, the conversation is disrupted or not? Or it does not flow as smoothly as it should?
