Very, very, very anxious. Mainly because if i don't get over 80 ATAR i really don't know what to do (i need this min) Makes me feel unhappy looking at courses less than this :(

arts at monash majoring in psychology what about yourself
That sounds really good! if it requires over 80 and your on Atar notes, you will surely get the score :) Nursing and midwifery combined degree at Deakin uni. suprisingly it has quite a high atar, not atarnotes high but moderate haha '82' but im aiming for a 87. fingers crossed!

I'll be overseas when I get my results :D
Booking accommodation and flights is so much more stressful for me than receiving and interpreting my score - I leave on Sunday and have no hotels booked! I'm pretty excited as to both the holidays, my score and university in general - feel pretty good atm!

I'm pretty nervous about receiving my study scores -- probably nothing on you guys though, having to receive your ATAR and all haha :D
I feel better thinking that I'm not the only one who's torturing my self or going crazy over my prospective marks lol.
But what's done is done, nobody can change that. Sometimes I think that my study score has already been decided and is already printed, black-and-white, for me to see. I guess considering it this way alleviates the stress somewhat? :)

Pretty nervous tbh, my exam results are supposed to come out on the 17th too :/
I feel your pain :(
Do you results even matter? Sorry if I'm being ignorant here, but as long as you pass, what are the benefits of having a higher score?
Personally, I'm not feeling too bad about receiving my results just yet. I keep having unhelpful thoughts about filling my multiple choice answer sheet wrong, even though I have the right answers in my booklet. I'm trying to suppress those though. :P

Think of the academic transcript as a criminal record, any near-fail or fail would taint your academic history and therefore could affect job applications in the future. Scores are particularly important in cut-throat industries like law where it's expected that you have at least distinction or high distinction averages etc.

Yeah. But where you get your internship is quite important (connections and all). Plus, by the time Rohit and I pass out, internships won't be guaranteed, and that's REALLY bad, because without one your med degree is useless - you are not qualified as a doctor without an internship, your degree is useless.

Hey i did Biology early in year 11 too! i was really nervous but i didn't know what to expect. My first time mid year getting a result i got a 'B'. I actually jumped up and down because i thought it was a really good grade haha, then i learnt the in's and out's of VCE results haha, whoops....... End of year i got a 'B+', and recieved a 35 SS at the end of the year via text. I was expecting a 37 but then i didnt know the diffucluty ect of getting a good score. Now im super happy with my 35 because i still beat around 80% of the state :) It's nerve racking, but the benefit of doing a subject in year 11 is knowing how hard you have to work in year 12, if you want to achieve high grades ect...

I'm only anticipating a score for one subject, so it's not AS daunting as receiving my ATAR, but I'm telling you.. I'm soooo freaking scared! When someone brings it up my heart starts beating like crazy and I feel like there are elephants stomping around on my stomach (on the contrary to butterflies). I'm not even sure why I'm so scared! My parents are not the pressuring type, and they seriously don't care what I get as long as I've given it my best shot (or so that's what they tell me). But I feel like I need to do the best I can to make them happy, kind of like to pay them back for everything they've done for me. On top of that, so many of my friends and classmates are pressuring me without even realising, predicting that I'll get some crazy-ass score that even I'd never imagine getting, so what if I don't get what they expect me to get? Plus, there's my psych teacher, who's amaazing and I feel like I need to do well as his top student to make him proud and in a way pay him back for all his time and effort. More importantly, I need to try and meet my own standards. Initially, I only wanted to get an average, 30-ish study score, but as the year progressed I kept increasing that goal, and then lowering it again after I did the unit 4 exam.. I just don't know what I'll be pleased with anymore.. I put so much effort into psych so hopefully it pays off. I guess anything above 40+ would be amazing, lets hope it works out! :S
Good luck everyone else!

I'm not one who cares too much about the marks (I haven't looked at my last 2 exam marks, just checked if I was "high", "medium" or "low" to make sure it wasn't the latter haha). I'm a Bonded student, so technically if I'm not "low" (bottom 25%) I am exceeding myself anyway haha :P
Others really care and have numerical goals of like 80+ for the year. That's not how I like to go about it -> becomes competitive, encourages secrecy of study groups and whatnot, not the way I like to roll and not how I'd like the cohort to become (but I feel it is already).
*shrugs*
@Paul, I don't have the confidence of even passing haha (not modesty, just honesty)

Thanks a heap katykins! this really helped! and yeah, its definitely a learning process. although, im in a pickle like vashappenin... my teacher thinks ill get a minimum of 44 raw (holy mother of pearl), and all i want is a 38 at best. i feel as though im stuck between a rock and a hard place, because there is a high chance i get around what i wanted, but less than what everyone else was expecting from me. my brother did biology early when he was in year 12 and got a 42, and because i am more studious than him (he seriously did nothing in vce), by default my parents think 48+ :'( its tooooo much pressure! ARRRGHH. all i want is a 37-38 so that i can have a decent platform to get into science @ monash/arts @ melbourne... i dont need atmospherically high scores :( but everyone thinks ill get them, and i have an ominous feeling that come the 17th, many people will be shocked and disappointed.

Hey, if your teacher believes you can, it is a high possibility that you can get the scores you want. Teachers have seen so many people do their VCE they know how the system works. What is important is that you are HAPPY with your score. YOU and only YOU alone. I understand the pressure that surronds VCE, believe me. you will be fine, you sound like your in a great position already buddy! just have faith in your own performance and use this experinece as a practice for year 12, and the amount of study you are willing to put in, its a great gage. Best of luck! let me know how you go please, im concerned for your mental well being hehe :P just make sure you enjoy your final year as it goes so fast! its stressfull, yes. The waiting right now kills, yes. But think of the amazing feeling when its all over. Remember your doing this for yourself! :D

Very, very, very anxious. Mainly because if i don't get over 80 ATAR i really don't know what to do (i need this min) Makes me feel unhappy looking at courses less than this :(
Arts last year was ~85(clayton), while science was ~80(clayton), so if you want to do psych at monash, this is a good second preference to have. It'll make it real easy to transfer into BA later too.

It's only one subject! If it's in your bottom 2 it won't even matter much.
What's more important (and I assume you're in yr11), is that you learn form what worked and what didn't work in your approach to bio, to make sure your strategy for yr12 is improved :)
Good luck!

Im not sure. I might fail psychology and spesh as well :'( Last year I was hoping for 45+ and now I think 35 above will be fine. How weird ??? Year12 next year. I just didn't study seriously for Biology because Im in yr11 so I thought it is okay to just play without study. Hahah thanks pi! ;)

It's been really worrying me a lot lately, I had a dream two nights ago that I got a 65 and was unable to do anything that I'd like, but I think my body is just anxious and over-reacting. Honestly, I don't think I'll get into my desired courses (check da sig brewskiz) so I'm hoping to get into pure Comp Sci and just be able to transfer.

I have no idea why but this morning I was lying in bed and imagining all the weird scenarios of seeing my ATAR for the first time.
Will I be shocked? disappointed? happy? content?
Since I can't predict my future and there're only 5 days left, all I hope for is the best for everyone and of course for me too.

No worries, glad I could help :) Been having a rough day playing around on ATARCalc too and feeling a bit regret myself (yet again). But we can't be negative now, what's done is done so live no regrets! And hope everyone will rock up their results ;D

Stop doing that! Used to live on ATARCalc, haven't touched it since. I'm not caring until the 17th. And on the 18th, back to not caring. When you guys all talk about Monday, all I feel like like the physically disabled and mentally retarded butterfly is trying to make its way through my intestines but instead gets digested because it's so weak, but I know it will fester on Monday. Just live life et al until it ends :P

I don't think it's the difficulty so much, just what the stuff represents. I'd happily take greater content and know that I'm going to be a teacher in a few years. Ofc, I didn't take the A5, but VCE isn't really gobsmacking stuff. I'm looking -forward- to uni -because- of the difficult stuff. (Probably should've chosen this in VCE but alas)

At the moment I'm more scared about the Change of Preference period..
My Dad is really adamant for me not to do Biomedicine and pursue something else like Pharmaceutical Science or Pharmacy, which I obviously am not planning to do. But I've heard stories about people's parents getting into their VTAC accounts and changing their preferences without them knowing, which is really dog.

Yeah, I'm changing it just before in case.
Dad and Gran think Pharmacy is a good back-up career in case I never get into medicine and won't listen to what's really happening with the field at the moment. Typical narrow-minded Asian parents, who think that they're right all the time, can't change that.

Knowing my parents, they would probably change my preference as far away from Med as possible :P I'm fairly sure if I got accepted into med when my time came they would stage a protest.

Personally, I wouldn't trust the VTAC system on the last day of change of preference. It'll be going slow as hell and I wouldn't be surprised if it crashes. I'm probably going to get my changes in early (if I have anything to change) and then probably just check it every day out of paranoia to make sure everything is set perfectly how I want it.

Im so lucky, my parents don't even understand what a study score of 40+ is, let alone VTAC. They just want me to do what i dream of doing (within reason of course, bye bye dramatic arts, hello double degree in nursing/midwifery. Which is also a awesome option i want to do) haha. Im doing this for myself more than anything, to prove that if i try hard enough i can achieve anything. Corny and cliche, true, but im really looking foward to getting out there. ;D
I wish everyone the best of luck, come monday! Just being on this site proves you care about your education and are going to get a decent score. And for the parents who hack into their childs VTAC accounts, shame on them. Let the kid do what they aspire to! makes me mad!

Considering you're a male, that's quite odd. I know a few parents who have pushed their sons out of nursing because it's a 'female' job and instead make them pursue medical careers instead.

Helping people does not depend on the profession, but rather on the person.
Anybody can help other people. I have heard of tradies who regularly do discounts for customers who are pensioners. That's a form of helping people. I have seen teachers who deeply care about their students. That's a form of helping people. What about those engineers who design roads so we have efficient transport? That's helping people.
At the same time, I have heard of doctors who have been embroiled in legal trouble for questionable conduct, being pervs and looking/feeling females for example, not to mention doctors who are money obsessed and don't care about their patients.
Don't be fooled into thinking that if you're in medicine, you're helping people. Helping people comes from the heart and no matter who you are or what you do, you will have the chance to help someone else, whether you are a plumber, an engineer, a teacher, a social worker, a computer programmer, a dentist or a doctor.

You can do graduate medicine as long as you have finished any undergraduate course - this is for Monash though, for UoM's MD, you'll have to fulfill certain pre-requisites.
Although it is preferable that you do a science based course though, because the GAMSAT does test basic tertiary level science including biology, chemistry and physics, so if you are doing another degree, make sure you take these subjects as electives or at least be prepared to learn them on your own.

I would like to remind people that although your ATAR measures the amount of effort you have put into your VCE, it does not measure your true potential and full range of abilities. We have all met people with an ATAR of 70 who we rate very highly, and people with an ATAR of 99 who we do not rate at all. Therefore, if you have any regrets on Monday, use it as an opportunity to fire you up for the future. You can get the academic side of things back on track within 12 months, if you so wish.

An interesting idea to pose. What if you don't get the ATAR you want and it's perhaps because you were getting too distracted with your girlfriend/boyfriend? How would you then feel if the relationship didn't last? Just want to hear people's thoughts, that's all. :)

We had a system going on , so depending on homework and sacs during the week we would meet and once a month or two months we organized a movie or something. this year , even with a bf, i still achieved the results that i wanted to and he did too. Haha! I think it depends on the people in the relationship !

You do pose an interesting idea Stick. Coming from my point of view, I see that when one or both of the partners are in Year 12, you can still make a relationship work but it takes a little more understanding and less time spent together unfortunately.
You have to know that the chances of you breaking up with teenage girlfriend is in the 90s percentile wise apparently (heard that some where) but I still reckon that the experiences you gain from one are so beneficially to growing up and having new memories to look fondly on.
Don't let year 12 stunt a budding relationship, IMO. It may be a tad harder to manage your time (especially if you are a new couple), but I have, and many others, have achieved more than they expected in VCE with a significant other.

Never regret your decisions because at one point, they were what you truly believed you wanted.

I asked out a girl two weeks before my English exam cause you know, you only live once and all ;P
P.S. We broke up well before the English exam.
Was it a stupid decision? Yes. It was pretty stupid.
Did it hurt my English score? Kind of.
Do I regret it? Not at all, cause at the time, it was what I wanted.
So don't worry so much guys, in the end things are just what you make of it, look onto things with an optimistic eye and you will be rewarded for it.

Yeah, forgot VCE and studies, I have parents to worry about. I ain't got no time to explain that. I'd just get a beating and a couple of lectures from my dad haha.
I think it would be pretty awesome to be in a relationship during VCE. Isn't it kind of beneficial in a way. When it's really stressful, you have that person especially to go to for a bit of peace.
But as you said about the probability of break ups and stuff, I don't want to commit to a relationship knowing that it has a high chance of collapsing. Judging by my school, they (students) don't know what they want at this age... And there is very little seriousness and maturity.
But as a wise man once said "Never regret your decisions because at one point, they were what you truly believed you wanted. " So I guess for some, it wouldn't be that bad.

Hi guys, I'm just wondering, if you obtain a raw score of 40, but the subject you're doing means it scales down to 38 for example, will your name appear in the paper or not?
Another scenario is if you obtain a raw score of 35 for Methods, and then it scales to 41, does this mean you're name gets into the paper as well?
My parents are wondering if this is the case or not, and I have no clue if it is or not.

To reaffirm, only raw scores of 40 and more will be published, given that the student gave permission for it to be done.

If you are in yr11, raw scores only. If in yr12, both scores.
There will be a table that will give the subject scalings for those uber keen yr11s who want to know the scaling. This table is released sometime after exams.
No need to stress :)

Im super anxious. I don't think i did that well (start of year wanted 90+ thinking i might even get low 80's). Im scarred im going to get a score ill be embarrassed/have to lie to family/friends + one that will not allow me to get into a good course :( hating life.

1. It's not the end of the world, there are other alternatives to get to your dream. 2. Why do you have to lie about what you achieve? Be happy for it. Take it as a learning experience because that's what it is, that's what every challenge is. 3. You shouldn't have to lie to your family for them to accept you. Sure they might not be happy if you didn't do as well as you'd hoped, but they'll get over it. Life goes on. 4. A score in the 80s is nothing to be ashamed of, you're still in the top 20% that's a great achievement.
Stop worrying, it's not the end.

We are all good at something or another, and I encourage you all to chase that niche that you have and show everyone what you are made of. You got this . Being in year 12 WE were the leaders. WE owned that town . Now it's time to do the same with our future. With our dreams. Don't look back. Friends will leave. People you thought you were closest will change. And these things are inevitable. But just don't loose faith in yourself and your own ability. Why? Because you have whatever it takes.

I don't understand why languages are so crazy!
Title: Re: Less than 13 days!
Post by: brenden on December 16, 2012, 02:16:45 am
Because scaling is based on the skill of the students enrolled in one subject in all of their OTHER subjects. So, someone enrolled in Bosnian is probably Bosnian, and may not be necessarily academic just because of that fact. They have the same chance of being academic as anyone else, whereas someone enrolled in Latin goes to a school that offers Latin which thus must be a very good school with a few exceptions. I'm talking private/select schools - because let's face it, not your average public school has a Latin teacher floating around. And I've got no evidence to back this up but I'd assume only the academic kids would even bother enrolling with Latin. Also, the students enrolled in Latin would probably have a higher English score on average.

I don't understand why subjects such as Latin/French etc scale up by so much whereas Arabic, bosnian etc don't . ???
My understanding is that Latin goes up so much because largely only really academically strong schools offer it. The scaling is a reflection of the scores that the people in a subject (the cohort, to use a Latin word..) achieve for their other subjects. Additionally, for languages, there is an automatic +4 scaling, because the government wants to increase communication/interaction with other countries. Such an explanation seems a bit weird given Latin's simply enormous prominence throughout the world. Nonetheless...
But so the difference between say Latin and Bosnian is that the schools that offer those two subjects, and hence the academic quality of those two cohorts is quite different. The variance in the scaling suggests that the Latin cohort of students generally outperform the Bosnian cohort in the other subjects undertaken by those students.
But why is it that more academically talented students take French or German and not Bosnian or Albanian? - that's a tough question to answer. Perhaps because the most academically strong schools don't offer the latter two, and hence the best academic kids don't get a chance to study them? I'm really not sure.
Title: Re: Less than 13 days!

Apparently only 150-200 students do Latin, and I suppose most are of comparable ability. Still, the top student each year should get 50.
Title: Re: Less than 13 days!
Post by: watto_22 on December 16, 2012, 02:30:39 am
What do you have to do to get a 50 in Latin? There has not been a 50 in the past 6 years. But there was a 49 last year.
This is just heresay, can't guarantee accuracy. But apparently, due to the bell curve and all that scaling-y sort of stuff, for someone to get a 50 there needs to be 200 students enrolled in the subject. Without 200 people, you need to legitimately get 100% on every assessment throughout the year - every SAC and the exam. Clearly, that hasn't happened. Last year two boys got incredibly close to doing so, and were rewarded with not only a 49 and a 48, but also Premier's Awards for Latin which were given out for the first time in recent history.
But that said, the difference between a 45 for Latin (scaled to 54) and a 50 (scaled to 55) is only one mark, so realistically there would be about 0.2 or fewer scaled marks difference between a 49 and 50.
I think it was last in the year 2000 that someone got a 50 for Latin. Wowee
Title: Re: Less than 13 days!
Post by: watto_22 on December 16, 2012, 02:39:51 am
The top student for every subject should get a 50? What about for say Swedish, where only 17 students took the subject in 2011. Since a score of 40+ is the top 8% or so, only 1 of those students should get a score above 40. (fyi there was in fact only one published 40+ score last year, a 41) Would you say that this student should automatically be given a 50 since after all they are the top student in the whole subject? That seems unreasonable to me - just consider the gulf between a 40 and 50 for say English, and the marked difference this 10 mark discrepancy would make to an overall ATAR - but where would you draw the line? Why make a distinction just for Latin (if that's what you meant by your post)? I think the current system works fine, even if I have no idea how they determine study scores for such unpopulated subjects
Title: Re: Less than 13 days!
Post by: Planck's constant on December 16, 2012, 02:49:07 am
Yes, I was suggesting that there would be no harm done if the top student in each subject got a 50. Raw subject scores are scaled afterwards to account for cohort strength, therefore the system would self correct for the purposes of calculating ATARs.
Title: Re: Less than 13 days!
Post by: brenden on December 16, 2012, 02:52:56 am
That doesn't make any sense. Like .15% of people should get a fifty every year in whatever subject. So in Swedish, if you round down, zero people should get a fifty. Scaling wouldn't correct the discrepancy in the slightest.

I think something weird happens in this case. When there are twoo few students, I SUSPECT that the actual exam score of the top student in the state determines that student's study score - so if the student gets 100% in the exam, that student is assigned a 50. Which explains why in Latin, when a similar number of students sit the exam every year, one year the highest score is 47, another its 44, another its 49, another its 50.

Rumour has it that Mr. Mountford only hands out 50s to students who score full marks on the end-of-year exam. :S The MGS student who got a 49 must have come really close to 100%.

I don't understand why we can't just email the government or something to get them to keep our results so that we never have to see it. THAT would be so much better.

That's what I was getting at. In popular subjects (eg Further) you can get a 50 without perfect scores (due to the number of participating students) whereas in Latin you need a perfect score to get a 50.
We could well have a situation where the VCAA set a very difficult Further exam where nobody gets a perfect score and yet many students will get a SS of 50 and yet a Latin student with a similarly imperfect exam gets a 47.
It's no big deal, just saying...

I'm hearing people say that the high achievers list (40+) will be published in the Herald Sun tomorrow, but I thought it usually comes out two days after.
Can anyone clarify?

When are the high achievers published in the newspaper?
Just be careful, because they got my cousin's score wrong (he got a 39 for English and he was in the paper for a 40). Then again, apparently his GAT result was "invalid" so perhaps it was an individual issue.

If I was to receive an ATAR of <30 tomorrow would it appear as <30 or 28.75 for example?

I think they just say under 30.
If any of you want to wait it out with other students, give the chat link a whack.

Hey all! Thought it'd be time to chip in with a corny, loving post to my fellow AN'ers.. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE, be it other year 11s like me, or you year 12s! Especially to you year 12s though.. because as much as I'm nervous, I know it'll be nothing like getting an ATAR. I have a good feeling you'll do well! A lot of you are inspirational people that not only I, but every ANer can look up to; watching your journeys from day one until now has helped me to learn both the good and the bad, and I really appreciate everything, be it through direct help or even vicariously (hah, psych <3) WHATEVER THE CASE, I really do hope you all do well, I am counting on it!
As for us year 11s, I hope it all works out well for us too; that we learn from any mistakes we've made if that be the case, and that we give next year our bestest shot and beast VCE!
Ok I'll cut it out with the corny crap now.. Less than 12 hours to go! :S

I heard from a teacher a few days ago that my name keeps coming up in conversation as the one to watch for high 90s. That is a compliment I guess, but I've never aimed for that at all this year and I know it's out of the question. So I'm hoping I partially meet their high expectations by getting into the low 90s. (I was feeling a lot less pressure before I heard what they said lol.) Whatever happens though, at least I can probably stop dreaming about results and school every. single. night.

I would just like to shout out to all the year 12s awaiting their results. You year 11s don't know how it feels just yet...it's like waiting for a foreboding doom.
Anyways. To the 2012 cohort:::
Let's face it. We are amazing . To have even firstly completing VCE. We are all good at something or another, and I encourage you all to chase that niche that you have and show everyone what you are made of. You got this . Being in year 12 WE were the leaders. WE owned that town . Now it's time to do the same with our future. With our dreams. Fucking don't look back. Friends will leave. People you thought you were closest will change. And these things are inevitable. But just don't loose faith in yourself and your own ability. Why? Because you have whatever it takes.
This, coming from a person who is a pessimist means something guy's.

Is the website rejecting all VTAC ID's or is it just me. It says my ID is invalid and after 3 unsuccessful attempts my account will be locked for 3 minutes.
Mine worked fine, check the email that VTAC sent you to make sure you're using the correct number.
Good luck everybody! 17 minutes left... iogoewtuhgiouewtgioaherwightyryhowiruyh
