Title: First 3/4 SAC English Oral Help@
Post by: someone.called on December 08, 2012, 12:54:32 pm
So our school has given us the luxury of picking our topics for our persuasive oral however it has to be a current issue published in the media since September 2012 any issue ideas? I can seem to find any that tickle my fancy

The Gonski Report on school funding is a promising topic.
It's got everything.

Just a few broad issues:
- Nursing strikes
- Teacher strikes
- Medical intern crisis (my personal favourite)
- Carbon tax
- Refugees

Best idea is to read newspapers/news sites so as to both find current events, and improve your reading skills. Also, check with your teacher whether you're restricted to talking about issues explored by the media since September 2012 IN AUSTRALIA, as I didn't know this and got shafted this year (2012).

http://www.aljazeera.com/ is usually my go-to news source, but you'd have to read a variety of papers/sources for the purpose of an oral presentation - so as to glean an understanding of the different perspectives that arise regarding the issue.

I focused on the expulsion of a journalist from Beijing (and implications regarding freedom of the press) for my oral.

Good Luck!

We can suggest topics until the cows come home and it ain't gonna help. I can only suggest reading up and being informed in order to find a current issue you really care about. :)

On the contrary, I think suggesting topics *does* help. Spending your own time reading up on the news takes time that could be used doing other things.

Ideally we'd all like to be well versed in the current news, but sadly that's not the case.
