Title: Do you have to be athletic/good at sport to do year 12 PE?
Post by: panda31 on December 15, 2012, 04:08:25 pm
Hi

Just for those who have done year 12 PE before and those who have started it, do you have to be fit and athletic and really passionate about sport to do it?

I'm not an athletic person and not sporty. I'm not really a english person, more into science and i havent done PE before.

I was thinking of doing it as a subject but I know theres a 6 week training program and various practicals too. What type of things do you do in the training/practicals and are you assessed on it?
If I did PE, my cohort is large and are all sporty people and my fitness is majorly horrible. Would this be a problem???

and would you say its an enjoyable subject? is it ever dry?

thanks for your help :)

Haha you definitely do not have to be sporty. In fact I think it would be better to have a science/biology background. The training program was easy, I got 40/40 and didn't even complete it because I'm doing my own training. I guess it was easier to write because I have a sport background, but it is a pretty easy task so I'm sure you'll do fine. The first 3 chapters were supposedly a bit boring-(although I found them ok), but I mainly found the science stuff hard to grasp because I hadn't done science since year 9. As you're good at biology however, this should be easy stuff for you from what I heard from bio students doing pe at my school. Overall there is very little prac and it is mainly theory and an interesting subject

I would say that pe is much better and more interesting if you are good at sport or enjoy it. also its not really that scienced based

what else are you considering ?

Lmao you don't have to be athletic or even good at sport to do well in PE. You rarely do any practical for the year only for assessments  but if you like sport if you would enjoy PE alot more. There's definitely no problem if you were not athletic or sporty as there were a few people in my class like that and they weren't affected at all. It can be enjoyable at times but however there are times where its dry but for me it was only in one instance really

Hey
in regards to how enjoyable the subject it is - it is quite interesting and though having a background in bio may help it is still quite different. What i think makes pe great is the varied topics that we do to allow as to look at sport/physical activity from many different angles. I never found it dry but i do know people who at some points found it a bit boring - this turned out to be more of the areas that were more rote learning than application (very small parts).

If you know you are sciencey PE is a great subject to do and defs don't need to be athletic. :)

If you're into science and like science you'll like PE. No you don't have to be athletic or 'good' at practicals. It's mainly theory anyway!

No, but if you are interested in sport and what happens in your body during physical activity etc. it does help :)

Thanks for your opinions and experience everyone. It does sound interesting. Just wondering, FlorianK, did you do PE for year 12? And has anyone else done it and gotten over 40, or even high 40s? Do you think its very difficult to do this and is it a time-consuming subject?

i was also thinking specialist maths but i know its very time-consuming and Im not that brilliant at maths. I dont want to be weighing myself down if i might not be capable of doing that well.
Also maybe psychology but Ive heard you have to rotelearn a lot and know it perfectly - and im not so good at memorising.

But I am interested in the policies, and anaerobic and aerobic respiration. and of course i would like to learn to be more fit and healthy.

Do you think its easier to do well in pe than psychology and do you have to know things word-for-word in pe, or is it more application?

I did pe this year so I can let you know how I went but I am aiming for over 40. Just  like any other subject if you want to do well you need to be able to take the time to learn the theory and then apply your knowledge.
Pe is more application than rote learning you really need to be able to apply your knowledge to many different situations.there is a lot of stuff to know bit it isn't overly hard

I did 1/2, but my cohort was pretty bad and the work ethic of them would've dragged my motivation down as well.
But I can say PE is not very hard and the rest of the state doing it is not the kind of cohort that puts in much effort, hence it is not very hard to get 40 raw. However 40 scaled is quite hard.

PE is a subject where you can make a shitload of mistakes in the exam (80% for low 40s) and if you know your stuff well and you are good in expressing yourself, which you need to full-mark a question high 40s shouldn't be a problem. Being amazing  at sports won't help you much, but the interest will help you being ambitious.

Thanks again for all your help.

I'm still unsure. ilovecats101 - have you done psych or pe before?
My memory is not that good, and especially with no midyears, Im not sure if i can retain all that info for psych and learn it perfectly.

What are the reasons why you would pick psychology?
