So people were right about the cut-off going to be really high, despite all the arguments against it.

It was a little higher than I expected , I thought 76-78 but I guess Atarnotes was right on the money

Thanks :) One more question, why does the SoM cost $9.35 per subject? Do they actually have to refer back to your exams and check which questions you got right/wrong, or don't they already have that on a computer already? If all that needs to be done is to print of a sheet and mail it to you, it's sort of exorbitant.

Because its pretty much the only way VCAA makes money..

got my statement of study score for accounting, the mean for the second exam was 95.8 with 48.42 standard deviation. if exam 1 had a mean of 92.8 and 45 standard deviation, and the A+ cut-off was 151/180, what would the A+ cut off for the second exam be?
Title: Re: SoM-Statement of Marks
Post by: shaiga95 on December 21, 2012, 02:43:58 pm
Usually about 8-10% obtain an A+
top 8% = standard deviation of 1.4
top 10% = standard deviation of 1.28
The mean for Exam 2 was 95.8
now with an A+ of about 8% =>95.8 + 1.4 x 48.2 = 163/180
or with an A+ of about 10% =>95.8 8 + 1.28 x 48.2 = 157.5/180
approximately 9.3% obtained an A+ on the midyear so the A+ cut-off will probably be around 160/180
hope this helps :)

O.O no... way...

people seem to be getting better at biology... i thought the exam was very vague near the end, and i was sure tonnes of people would get the human evo questions wrong (myself included). i thought cutoff would be ~ 62ish/75

Yeah, I actually just made it on the A+! It's so stupid how in 2012 we were set exams (both) which had cutoffs so high because they were so much simpler than previous ones, I did so many practice exams and questions but they were all unlike the simplicity of these 2 exams, still got higher than I expected so I can't complain  :P

I totally agree. although i dont think it was actually intentional on VCAA's behalf, because they write both exams before the midyears... i think it was just a coincidence that most people found both exams relatively easy imo :D i was just happy it wasnt like some of the previous end of years... some of them were actually evil.
English A+ Cut-off: 47/60 (23.5/30)
hopefully it can drop a little next year :D

Hey idk if I should post it here but the day after i got my results, I ordered a statement of SS.. and a few days later they posted me a statement of marks.. I emailed them to say I didn't order that (and they have visual proof of what I circled), yet they havent responded and I havent received anything.. But that's unfair because it's not my mistake, its theirs! :@ :S

60.5 for Chem? Woah, that's lower than I expected. Must be the sorbate qn and the energy sources qn.

I wonder what the A+ cut for chem next year would be (say the exam is out of 125). Given there will be an extended response question and a higher focus on explain questions...I'm going to reckon A+ will slide to about 80% - so 100/125.

Thanks! I really wasn't expecting to get 50 in Accounting, especially after reading the assessor's report for the mid-year exam and realising I'd gotten a few theory questions wrong. But I got 174/180 (87/90) for Exam 1, full SAC marks (200/200), and 173/180 (86.5/90) for Exam 2. Geez, how did I end up doing better in the mid-year than the end-of-year...

Anyway, congrats on your 50! Yay for Accounting! Do you know your exam marks?

Still no one with the Further A+ cut-offs?

I'd be curious to know these, too.

I may be ordering a Statement of Marks for Exam 2, because my Statement of Study Score tells me that I got 119/120, which means that one assessor thought I got full marks but the other didn't. I mean, does that even happen with a subject like Further? I'm guessing that one of them might have taken issue with the accuracy of my contour map or something...

Yeah, I got my statement of the study score today, and received 115/120 for exam two. I was thinking maybe doubts with the worded answers could be another source of the assessors scoring a point, while the other doesn't.

If anyone cares though, the A+ cutoff for the drama written was 105/120 :)

WELL DONE. THATS AMAZING! CONGRATS!

I originally got a 45 , but when sharing the statement of marks with AN,  someone else got the a few marks off higher than mine , and they received a higher study score. So i contacted VCAA and they said they were looking at it. I got an email yesterday , saying that there was a mistake, blah blah , and they were entirely responsible for the mistake  and I had received a 46 instead , study score. :) Although it doesn't make a difference as such , only one point .
So warning, if you think your study score , is not what you deserve, get a SoM and ask them why, unlike me , if it wasnt for atar notes , i would have ignored it completely !

THANKS ATAR NOTES !!!!!! :) you guys saved my study score. ! :)

To those interested, A+ cut off for Mathematical Methods (2012) for Exam 1 was 36.5/40. For Exam 2 it was 61.5/80 which suggests that it was quite a difficult exam, seeing as you could lose 18.5 marks and still achieve an A+.

SoSS- shows your number result for the 3 GAs and also the mean and standard deviation for each GA.
SoM- shows what you scored on each question of the exam and the range of scores for the grade you got

I'm really confused with my chem unit 4 exam result. The a+ cut off was 60.5/72..and I believe after very harshly marking myself that I got about 57-62/72 for the chem exam and yet received a B+...it seems as though the A cut off would have been around 55/72 I think..do you think I should order a statement of something...and which statement  do you think would be of most relevance to help me out. btw I received a ss of 34 for chem with the following grades...A B+ B+... :-\

The mark on the front page is for the multiple choice. You would've got 24/25, and then they doubled that to give you 48/50

You would've had six assessors for English  :P

The mark on the front page is for the multiple choice. You would've got 24/25, and then they doubled that to give you 48/50
oh wow.. feel so stupid now! haha cheers mate for clearing that up  :D

The A+ range for Further Exam 2 was 105 to 120 (52.5 to 60).

Turns out I lost half a mark on one of my worded answers. Not sure if it's worth fighting for (don't know what my chances are of winning, either), just for the shot at a Premier's.

A+ cutoff for Business was 101/130...little lower than normal but nothing suprising.

Ok with regards to my end of year chemistry exam grade I'm having quite strong doubts that I actually received a B+(which means I lost about 16-20 marks on the exam) do you guys think I should order an SOM just in case they did give me an incorrect grade or?

Hmm.. that's a tad higher than usual. I wonder what the cut-off was for Exam 1. I did think this year's assessments were slightly easier than some of the other recent ones.

I somehow lost 10 marks in Chemistry exam  2... this is very weird as I thought I would've lost 6-8 at the absolute max. Is it worth getting it checked?
71/75 and 62/72 + 190/200 sacs for a 42?

You could, but unfortunately there's not much chance they'll remark it  :-\

I just found out in 2011, for English my brother got 3 A's and a study score of 29. That year basically everybody got a 29 for English at the school, even the ones barely passing sacs... Is it possible to actually get a 29 with 3 A's?
He didn't contact the vcaa about it as we were overseas and he met the prerequisites for his course

Never heard of that before  ???

According to Mao's study score calculator he should've scored between 36 and 38

ok, I got my SoM for ESL  :)

TR 20/20 --> 160/160 [Interpreter of Maladies] yay!

Context 16/20 --> 96/120 [I&B] really good score considering that I didn't finish the piece and made up half of the evidence

C1 13/20 --> 39/60 :(
C2 14/20 --> 42/60 :(, didn't thought they'd take off soo much for neglecting visuals

Final Score 337/400

A+ Cut-off 293/400
