Title: Science - Subject selection
Post by: k.sangakkara on December 21, 2012, 08:16:14 pm
Hi guys,

Anyone have a list of the core subjects for the Melbourne Science Course? I tried reading the handbook, but I'm just totally confused. So it'd be great if someone could paste a list of the necessary subjects here thanks.

:)

Does looking at http://www.bsc.unimelb.edu.au/majors make it clearer?

There are no core subjects per say, however the following requirement need to be met:
- 62.5 to 125 points of science subjects are level 1
- no more than 37.5 subjects are level 1 in one direction (ie. in maths)
- 62.5 to 112.5 points of science subjects at level 2
- 75 to 125 points of science subjects at level 3
- 225 - 250 points total of science subjects
- note that you must do a major (and all its prerequisite subjects)
+ a total of 50 to 75 points of breadth (non-science subjects) must be completed, that includes
- 0 to 37.5 points at level 1
- 0 to 75 points at level 2
- and 0 to 75 points at level three
**12.5 points per subject**
300 points are required for the completion of the course

Hope it helps :)

So could I wait till second year to study breadth subjects? Also, I've already completed a UMEP subject in VCE this year, so technically that would be 2 breadth subjects out of the way. Is it easy to get credited for these units?

You can absolutely wait till second year to do breadth, thats what I have done. the UMEP subjects will count towards breadth or science credits depending on what the subjects were.

Ah, perfect. They weren't science subjects, so at least I'll only have to do 2 breadth subjects during my course.

mark_alec is right, it depends on what you want to major in. For example, under the 'life sciences' section of http://www.bsc.unimelb.edu.au/majors, the first year prereqs are generally biology of cells and organisms, genetics and the evolution of life, chemistry 1/ fundamentals of chemistry (the latter if you haven't studied vce chem), chemistry 2.
