Who here is coming to MelbUni next year? If so, what degree are you doing and what do you hope to achieve with it? (ie. Post-grad work, international career)
UoM FTW
EDIT: Changed titled to JAFFYs. Lolz.
-
Lol . I am . Hope to get into science. I hope to learn more about medicinal chemistry and drug development . Afterwards I think I'd be a good drug dealer :P
-
Nice. With a 93 ATAR, I'd be very surprised if you didn't get into Sci :) A little bit of Breaking Bad I see
-
I am doing Bachelor of Science (Computing and Software Systems) then perhaps moving into Network Systems Engineering or something and doing a Masters of Information Systems. :)
-
I probably won't get into Melbourne, due to my literature score, but I will see you guys in second year :) Bachelor of Arts FTW!
-
I'll be coming (back) to Melbourne Uni. I am doing a Bachelor of Science and as to what I want to achieve from it? Being awesome. That is all.
-
lol who calls them freshers?

I thought it was jaffy. Just Another F****** First Year.
-
I'm feeling old looking at this thread... :/ can't believe it's three years since I started university!
-
He's preparing for when he will be studying here. We called all the freshmen Jaffys because they didn't understand what we were saying it was beautiful.
-
Woo UoM :D

So true!!!! Melbourne has made for an amazing university experience for me. These last three years have flown by too fast. I'm excited for the next four years I have at Melbourne. Alot of my friends doing Commerce and what not are entering the work force and doing 9-5 jobs. I'm kind of happy that I'll still have that Uni Lifestyle.
Good luck for everyone awaiting offers for UMelb!!!
-
Yeah, I generally refer to them as JAFFYs - even when I was one myself. It's only a short step from "fresher" to "sophomore" and "junior". In my opinion, Americanisms like that sound stupid when being used in Australia. I think college students at UoM often use the US terms - this contributes to my general disdain for them.
Btw, welcome all first years/JAFFYs.
-
I'm hoping to get into my first preference, bachelor of science-civil systems to then study masters of civil engineering. If I don't get into science, then hopefully I can get into bachelor of environments and then do civil engineering :) hopefully :)
-
Sounds good everyone! Hopefully you all get an offer to come to UoM and if so, welcome.
-
I'll be coming back to uni (7th of January in fact - AMSI summer school). I'll be continuing with my MSc, which I've extended by a semester, so I can put more work into research.
-
I'm coming back Jan 14th because I'm taking Foundations of Electrical Networks over Summer. Looks good to me.
-
Should be doing a bachelor of music (passed the audition and met the requirements), not really sure what I want to achieve with it, I just love music so hopefully if I work hard rewards will come. :P
-
I've got a mate doing that next year too. VCA or MCM? I think MCM is the classical school if I'm not mistaken and she's going there.
-
Yeah MCM, what instrument is she doing?
-
I'll be there next year studying science, with absolutely no idea where I'm headed. Will prob be taking maths, chem, physics and engineering units first year to keep everything open.
-
Leaving breadth till 2nd year is probably the best for you if you're undecided. Your plan keeps open all physical, chemical, mathematical and engineering majors except chemical and biomedical engineering. You've got heaps of choice left.
-
Sorry bro, didn't see your edit. She's doing Trumpet, and picking up Piano as a minor instrument or something in second year.

What must be taken in first year to keep chem eng open?
-
Oh wait, you're doing Chemistry 1 and 2. You should be good for Chem Eng as well.

In case I miss Aerospace Engineering/Science degree at Monash, I might get into Melbourne Science(with SEAS). I'm gonna study mathematical physics and become a physicist. Then I might continue my way through particle physics or astrophysics. But I hope I can get into Aerospace Engineering/Science at Monash so I will have more flexible options in the future.

Spoken like a true Monashian :D
Though I got to admit that Melb-Uni O-week is much better and useful in terms of getting into uni life than Monash's. (crashed my friends o-week group last year)
-
Hopefully I will be!! :D
Just waiting for the offers. I'm excited.

doing Biomed :) (from a rural school, so guaranteed a spot) and something in the health sciences eventually..

Welcome. With an ATAR as excellent as yours, I'm sure you'd get into Biomed no matter what school you went to.

I just graduated high school and I'm aiming for the BSc animal health and disease, I hope to graduate BSc and get into the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine course... speaking of which, does anyone know the chance of getting into it? what sort of grades will I need?
-
A question to fellow 2012 graduates: how many of you are taking a gap year and starting UoM in 2014?
-

Definitely good ones. Vet is quite competitive. I'd say at least H2As from what I've heard, but I'm no expert.

I'd try to get the best marks possible (trying to get as close to a H1 average as possible) as there would be quite a bit of competition and it's only based on GPA.

What is the Animal Health and Disease major?
Animal Health and Disease is one the majors on offer in the Bachelor of Science.
The core second year Animal Health and Disease subjects - Foundations of Animal Health 1and 2, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology - are the prerequisites for entry to the Veterinary Bioscience specialisation. During second year studies in the Animal Health and Disease major, students can apply for entry to the Veterinary Bioscience specialisation for third year. Students who are admitted to, and successfully complete, the Veterinary Bioscience specialisation in third year are guaranteed entry to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with 100 points credit (1 year of study), leaving 3 years of study in the DVM.
The major also provides a pathway for students interested in pursuing careers in areas such as animal science and research, animal production industries, disease surveillance and bio-security, and animal welfare. The alternative specialisation is Animal Disease Biotechnology, from which students will graduate with skills in the areas of animal health and disease surveillance.
