Commerce students!

*shameless plug time* selling first year...

-management textbook (MGC1010) including the iStudy card - $60

- marketing textbook (MKC1200) but Monash made a modified version last semester that is exactly the same but they chopped out a few pages, ill let it go for $25

-microeconomics textbook (ECC1000) the version I have includes macroeconomics as well - $40

PM me if interested~

What badass majors.

Biggest tip is dont drop the ball. A lot of people are used to being forced to hand things in on time (or even at all) in highschool. In uni, no one makes you. You can hand it in late if you like with penalties, same work for less marks. I've done this a fair few times and regretted it every time. Plenty of people dont even hand in an assignment sometimes. So, just keep your discipline up.

Skipping lectures is ok long as you listen to them relatively soon after. Plenty of people skip lectures and only listen to all 30 the week before the exam or something.

Dont buy food from meeting point unless you want a new species of virus or bacteria named after you (especially the pasta).

are all lectures recorded and able to watch at home or only some of them? if this is the case will we be told whether the lecture is recorded or not?

Almost all lectures are recorded. The student union (MSA) ran a campaign last year and the year before to convince most of the lecturers to do it, as far as i know though, it's still up to their discretion.

The vast majority are recorded (almost all the recorded ones have video of the lecturers screen/projector output too).

If one is recorded, its almost certain all the rest will be too (barring technical failure, etc).

A provisional list should be here before uni starts - http://mulo.monash.edu.au/

If they were recorded last year, fair bet they will be for this year though. So, you can look at last years list.

It's behind the law building, or the first building across the loop from the bus loop.

Probably one of the few nice looking lecture theatres

Oh you'll be fine
I remember being lost on my first day of Uni (after having a cancelled train - so I was terribly late)
Ran into Kazdawg from the forums who pointed out the way ^-^

Have a mooch around on this site or get the app, it can be quite useful: http://lostoncampus.com.au/monash/clayton

We'll most likely be looking at a meet at Monash during O-Week for everyone to meet eachother.

It's a great way to get to know an initial batch of people as well :)
Title: Re: The Monash Jaffy (first year) Thread 2013
Post by: slothpomba on January 20, 2013, 01:36:03 am
You'll be lost for 2-3 weeks max. The positions of things dont usually change week to week. Once you know where everything is it's generally OK.

It seems like a big place at first and it is but buildings tend to kind of cluster. A lot of the science/biomed buildings are next to eachother in a certain area of the uni, same with a fair few arts buildings, etc.

Dont be afraid to use your map for the first couple weeks or ask people where shit is, almost always they're willing to help.

For all new commerce students in 2013, on O week there's this thing called Student Ambassadors that help you on the day.
They also set up a peer mentor kind of thing (starting this year, if i'm not wrong), to help new first years cope with first year uni.
So yeah, if you think you have problems (academic, etc etc), seek one of these ambassadors.

I'm a Student Ambassador for the Bus Eco faculty this year, so yeah, if you have any commerce related problems, just ask us (or some of the older guys on campus).

For science, we got an idea of what requirements we need to meet (nothing you cant find in the handbook) and members of each department (chemistry, physics, astronomy, biology, etc) gave little pitches about their areas and why we should do their subjects.

Nothing all that great or important honestly. If you got nothing else on that day and can be bothered, certainly can't hurt going. I know it seems important now but in hindsight its not something i'd blow off anything important for.

Likewise, the science faculty (same with arts, commerce, etc) has an office, with a desk staffed with people 9-5 whose sole job it is to inform you about courses, requirements, if you're progressing in the right way, etc. You can always pop down and ask them or email them.

I was oversea during the info session and got my sister to go in place of me. When she got back from the info sesh, I got told off over the phone for over 30 mins because Monash wasted half of her day telling students everything that can be found on the internet.

Also, the enrollment session is a waste of time if you've already enrolled on WES and know how the units and stuff works.

Guessing thats the Rotunda, its a big round building, and then lecture thearte R4, so just keep walking around the circular walkway inside till you find R4.

Thanks pi, is there also a way to make it appear in windows live so that i can send and receive from the actual account and not a forwarded account?
When i try to add the account to mail it has blank space in server adress (incoming server information) and server address (outgoing server information). Do you know what i need to fill in here?

after playing around for ages, it turns out the 'username' we have to put in to sync mail accounts is not abcd1 but [email protected]
If anyone was trying to sync with no success to windows live mail or apple mail that should fix it on all devices (after this follow the instructions on the link above)
However before that you do need to go to google mail settings in a browser -> forwarding / IMAP -> enable IMAP

On another note does anyone know if there are lockers in monash especially for storing clothes for sport/gym/riding and how much it costs and such

The only lockers I know of are in the basement level of the Menzies building. There is no charge, it is on a first come, first served basis and you will need to bring a lock yourself for it. They need to be cleared out before the end of each semester.
