You can classify people (who buy macs/apple products) into groups.
1. They buy everything Apple, because they're sheep that follow.
2. They buy mac's because they find it intuitive and easy to use. Build quality
3. 2 and Software
4. Then you have people who use the same lame "its expensive excuse", because they weren't allowed one.. (In my case, friends etc..)
My MacBook Pro is extremely well built, that's very important to me. It's reasonably fast. Faster to do every day things than most other windows equivalents (that's down to the OS). And most importantly, great software. Logic Express etc...
This should be an entirely different topic imo. haha. It'll just end in a huge fist fight (keyboard fight)
-
5. Normal people
-
Oh no, I don't like wasting my money, I must be jealous -.-

yes, it's just an "excuse".
apple legitimately sells the same specs you'd find in the equivalent windows setup for $1000+ more
you keep telling yourself that the "build quality" is worth forking out an extra thousand dollars.
i'll be over here not being taken advantage of

No ones disputing that macs are easy to use, it's more of an issue with functionality
Fir certain uses, (design etc.) macs are great, but in terms of replicating the convenience of other laptops in word processing etc, they really just don't compare
Also chicken65, your comment above could be classified offensive. There are plenty of people who could easily afford macs, they simply don't find that it suits their own needs or style of work
-
Have any of you who have complained even own a mac?
I never said build quality is the only thing either... The software is brilliant, it's far more reliable, again, it has software that has no parallel twin to its windows brother..
Also chicken65, your comment above could be classified offensive. There are plenty of people who could easily afford macs, they simply don't find that it suits their own needs or style of work
Those groups I listen were meant to be taken semi seriously :)
They aren't the only people who buy it but yes, in all honesty, I feel that way sometimes. People simply can't afford a mac so they always say, it's over priced etc.. I'm fortunate enough that my parents allowed me to purchase one.
-
I could afford a mac if I wanted one. They offer me no improvement over my ultrabook. Ergo, I'd rather save the $400

To me, it does. I've gone through a fair few laptops and a gaming machine, I feel that my mac is a bit faster when it comes to everyday tasks.
It annoys me when people always say that you can get a comparable system for a cheaper price if you go a windows route. Mac's are a different OS (okay UNIX) so comparing them to a windows pc is just stupid in my opinion. If people tested out real world tasks on both machines, I think they'd come close. Obviously most windows PC's around a mac price range will easily beat it in terms of processing power.
I could afford a mac if I wanted one. They offer me no improvement over my ultrabook. Ergo, I'd rather save the $400
Of course, I can completely understand. There's no point in spending extra if you don't need it. But I can justify it with my reasons. You could use the $400 elsewhere!

Care to explain why?
The friends I speak with often aren't allowed expensive computers from their parents (because they don't see its worth) so they always say it's over priced (maybe to make them feel better).. How am I a spoilt "brat" as you put it..

If your immediate go-to is that anyone who exhibits any sense of fiscal responsibility is poor and jealous, you are spoiled. It means you're living in a bubble where you bizarrely think that the only reason people don't buy expensive things is that they can't afford them.
You then immediately illustrate my point by demonstrating that you don't pay for your possessions so you of course have little concept of the value of money. Live a little, you'll see what I mean.
-
Hey guys, cool it down.
Chicken, to some people Macs are overpriced, to others its worth it. No need to judge those who find Macs overpriced.

Did you not read where I said that it wasn't everyone, but my friends? Also, just because I didn't pay for my mac, it doesn't mean that I've never worked or know the value of money. Don't assume so much.
There's a reason why the posts from before got deleted, so I'll stop here.

Look I'm sure you didn't mean to come off as bratty, but your comment kinda gives that impression. Yeah YOUR friends might have those reasons, but don't forget there are many more people outside your small circle. In saying that you think most people don't buy macs because they can't afford it, it almost appears as though you're trying to assert your own privilege/financial status, which I'd say is unadvisable.
Trust me, you don't want to cross that line...I doubt I'm the only one that's holding back from spewing some seriously heated words.

I really didn't mean it that way, very sorry to anyone who felt that way..
I don't know if it's what I said before. But I restricted what I said to MY friends because I know them. They always say that mac's suck, they're too expensive.. Only because their parents don't allow them one. (yes our parents buy our computers). My parents thankfully bought me an iMac, then I sold it and used money that I saved up to buy my Macbook. :)
I never ever boast about my parents financial status because I don't think I have any right to. It's their money not mine. They choose it to spend it however they see fit. Dad works with computers everyday as well so I think he has good reason to justify purchasing a mac for me.

Guys, this is the second time, cool it. If you want to call someone out for their shortcomings, do it constructively. Don't let this thread descend into rage posts.
EDIT: Cooled. Phew. :)

Look honestly, I know this will go no where. As far as I see it. If your content with what you have. That's awesome. I'm very happy with what I have. I have a gaming PC and a macbook for schooling and music production! Gaming PC is approaching 3 years though.

Is this the right forum for this thread? ITT we have 17 year olds telling us the only reason we don't buy Macs is because we can't afford it.. When all of us here have worked and saved up many times what this guy has in his whole life?
What?
-
I think this has raised an interesting point, however - quite a few people tend to express their distaste for the other when they have not even tried them both themselves... I know a fair few people that do this.

Yeah you're right, I moved it to OGD. I meant to earlier but I got distracted by some idiot messaging me on fb

It appears to have been unintentional. I'd say we drop kesh-bashing and go back to mac-bashing :P
And stick, true, but I've used a mac, and didn't like it. That said, everyone's entitled to their own opinion ::)

oh wow. Can you please understand that I said it was limited to just my friends who I know well.......
-
I'm not accusing anyone of doing it and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It pisses me off, however, when people reckon they know all there is to know about both when they haven't even tried one of them. I'm sure we can all relate to this somehow. :P

I said sometimes here, maybe not the best way to say it.
Either way, maybe I didn't say it right, maybe I crossed the line. But everyone makes mistakes right?? I've admitted it. You can stop talking about me now. :) Thanks
-
Honestly I'm more annoyed because its been a long time since I interacted with somebody that still lives in this bubble that money is just a factor of whether your parents give it to you or not. But whatever. Case closed.
Hey could you please elaborate more on your fathers justification on buying you a Mac? I missed it :)

Guys, let's just drop it.
-
It wasn't really my fathers justification to be honest. :)
I bought an iMac because I wanted it for producing music. Using Logic express which is only available on the OSX. So really, I had no choice in what to buy. I didn't like the mac mini because it was lower specced back then I believe, and also I wanted a screen and the keyboard and so on. But yeah, that's the main reason.
But I recently sold it and used what ever money I could to buy a new Macbook pro. Funny enough, even though I mentioned build quality, I had to return my first one because the hinge was squeaking hahaha.
But yeah, the macbook has pretty much the same power, probably a bit less. But it's portable so I can use it anywhere and make music and my friends places and stuff.
On top of that, it's just curiosity :) I'd like to see what it's like to own a macbook on a daily basis. It's also easier for mum to use than a traditional PC. So she can use it when she wants to go on skype or what ever.
(I'm trying to draw this away from me haha)
-
If I wanted a Macbook I'll go to Maccas. I don't see the difference in quality.
-
MacBooks are incredibly light and thin with really good screens. Nothing really comes close in terms of combining features, thinness and weight though.,
-
Yeah, agreed. But some people just don't care.

If I had to get a macbook it would be a macbook pro with the retina screen but even then the basic model is $1900 without a dedicated graphics card which is a bit of bummer

If you look at the base price for a 13" macbook. Around 1300, also factor in that the retina one uses thinner components and a newer chassis as well as an SSD. You can sort of see where it's coming from at the same time. Then you add Apple Tax. :)
-
The people which crack me up are those who buy Macs because it's 'hip' and then buy droids and diss iPhones cause that's also hip

The 13" doesnt have a retina screen and has the terrible 1280 x 800 resolution. Also no dedicated graphics card and is thicker and heavier than the new macbook pros.
For $1349 you can get something with much MUCH MUCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH better specs albeit a tiny bit heavier
-
iPhones I am okay with because google play sucks and handset support for Android also sucks
-

WHAAAATTT!!??
I like google play, I like how you can install apps from your computer and it pushes it to your device. I think iTunes can do that now?
Which phone one do you have? Are you talking about manufacturer support or just support in general? XDA developers has a huge base of programmers and devs for a huge range of droids.
-
Can I also point out one thing I love about my macbook.
Im not sure if any other notebook can do this (I haven't come across one). But can you open your notebook by pulling just the lid and not touching the base. I love that. Don't ask me why. :P
-
^^
I do that every day on my UX-31
Getting the latest Android release pushed to your handset appears to be a matter of chance as far as I can tell. iOS is straight away.
Google Play has very few of the apps I want, because nobody wants to port them from iOS because the different handsets have different compatibilities and your market is fragmented.
If you're going to root/custom firmware your phone then sure.

Oh okay lol
JB took a while for many phones I guess. But people managed to bring JellyBean before it's official release onto some of the more popular smart phones.
off topic though. lol

There is a 13" retina. There is no dedicated graphics, but I don't see a need for it given the Ivy Bridge GPU performs reasonably well. I acknowledge that it still doesn't compare to a dedicated GPU, but then who the hell is going to buy a Mac to play games? Beside games, I cannot think of a single valid reason for needing a dedicated GPU.

And I'm saying that dedicated graphics card is pointless for doing real work. Macbooks are not multi-purpose machines for gaming enthusiasts (read: most computer enthusiasts). They are for people who has lots of work, and no time for the usual bullshit that is associated with a 'normal' laptop.
Despite what Apple marketing says (their job is to fool people to buy their product), the actual value of a Macbook is not in its specs or the usual hardware. It's in the integration of different components, and how each component is built to the same high quality. I challenge you to find an ultrabook with the same quality touch-pad, battery life, chasis (read: not plastic) & audio output. I will even forgo the software and aesthetics. Can you find a better spec laptop, with the same form factor, with the same portability, at a lower price than macbooks?
-

Don't even mention XPS. I couldn't have gotten rid of that laptop any faster.

I just read that and wish I could word everything as well as that :O
Agreed. All macs also seemed to have very good DAC's for audio. Personally, I also liked the feel of the plastic macbooks from ages ago too :) I think it's the "unibody" that I'm impressed with most.
What notebook actually has the highest battery life? Is it actually the Macbook or?

Okay then, minus the dedicated graphics and any other laptop is even cheaper.
Also, asus UX31A

I think he's talking about the whole package.
I do like the UX screen res though.

No. Macbooks haven't held that title for a while. There are several ultrabooks that beat it at battery life, though it comes at a price: a shit screen (oh, and no dedicated graphics of course).
You can't really compare newer ultrabooks with Macbooks anymore, because of the Windows 8 'tablet' thing, where everyone is putting capacitive touch screen on their laptops now, and so this extra 'functionality' adds costs and values that cannot be compared. I am still ideologically against the idea of tablets though (ever since the iPad made its debut).

Compared to the MBA, its only advantage is a higher resolution screen (note: higher resolution does not imply better).
Compared to the MBP Retina, it is slightly worse in every way.

compared to the MBP Retina, it is at least 700 bucks cheaper (from where I bought it, think its still $1200)

What's your beef with tablets?
-
What's your beef with tablets?
They are useful for games like Fruit Ninja, and that's about it. I used to think they would be good for maths, until I discovered LaTeX. I also used to think they would be good for drawing (e.g. graphs, diagrams), until I actually tried and everything just looked terrible. As far as productive work goes, we still need a keyboard. And I'll slap a bitch if she tries to put her dirty fingers on my screen.
-
You mean, after you discovered LyX :-P
-

The trackpad cannot compare to the Macbook range (first hand experience from a friend). The audio does not compare. The screen, even though high resolution (less than retina in pixel count, higher than retina in display resolution), lacks vivid colour. Other aspects such as battery life and CPU benchmarks are slightly worse, but not by an amount that's worth mentioning. Nevertheless, it is still worse than the Retina in every way. The same goes for the Samsung 9 and HP Envy.
I won't get myself into an argument about whether these differences are worth $700 (accessories and options in a new BMW can cost more than an entire Toyota).
Anyways, the choice between Apple and non-Apple is usually a lot simpler. It depends on which OS the person is more familiar with. It's very hard to switch from one to another.
-

I think tablets are great for little things like basic web browsing, email, Facebook and instant messaging clients like Skype. I agree that tablets aren't very good for productivity however.
Basically, activities that do not demand the power of a notebook or desktop. Think of the Asus transformer tablets actually. They're a great example, essentially a tablet but once you pop it onto a dock, it can do many things a netbook can.
-

I disagree. Personally, I think it's very easy, having done it myself. But are you talking about learning curve or just find it hard to want to switch?

I found it easy too, but most people don't. It's more that OSX and Windoze have different paradigms about how to do things (e.g. taskbar vs expose).

Each to their own

Fair enough, I guess other would have issues with that. I think apple actually had a set of videos to help people switch over.
That's it. http://www.apple.com/support/macbasics/

it is fairly clear that this thread is intended to show how superior you are to pc 'plebs' who are much poorer than you and as such cannot afford computers as good as yours. have you considered that maybe no one cares as much as you do and that you are not any better for having demonstrated your clear inherent superiority over them. it is inappropriate and a show of poor character to find satisfaction in berating people because they cannot or choose not to afford a more expensive computer than otherwise necessary. this thread would be a better contribution to the world if it were for providing technical help rather than belittling others

Do you find that you miss the taskbar in OSX? Or is that just me? I've never really used the "launch pad".

Didn't read all the posts(too long) but
Programmers who want to run Mac OSX, Windows and Linux on the same machine.
-

Nope. I use 'Alfred' to launch everything. It's kinda like spotlight but on steroids.

Developing on a Mac is such a pain though ( by this I mean programming ). I'm just spoiled using Ubuntu :(
Though if I got a macbook the first thing I would do is remove the Mac partition and install both Windows/Linux on top - you get the best of both worlds imo.

You do. But that's only if you want to program for iOS.

Last year when I started postgrad, we had iMacs on our desks. I loved using my iMac so much, that I decided to buy a MacBook Pro because I needed a laptop. I have had problems with the hard drive and logic board (I'm starting to think the logic board was the main issue), but with my warranty I was able to have everything replaced in a matter of days (not weeks or months). I also love the aluminium shell, over the plastic shell. I'm pretty much set on staying a Mac user.

I also love the aluminium shell, over the plastic shell. I'm pretty much set on staying a Mac user.
I do like Apples warranty service. Although sometimes the people are a bit of a pain to deal with, their policies and turn around times are superb.

Developing on a Mac is such a pain though ( by this I mean programming ). I'm just spoiled using Ubuntu :(
Though if I got a macbook the first thing I would do is remove the Mac partition and install both Windows/Linux on top - you get the best of both worlds imo.
I don't find developing on Macs painful at all. All the standard *nix tools are available. Unlike Windoze, I don't have to launch a thousand IDEs to do some simple scripting. Why do you find programming on Macs painful?

It's just a preference thing. I prefer Qt over Xcode, and a lot of hotkeys and stuff are different. I find the terminal a little harder to use as well.
Then again, it could be just a Linux fanboy gripe :) I'm sure I could get used to it if I had to. (Not like there was/is any other choice to dev for iOS )

tl;dr
I'm a mega Windows fan mostly because I don't give a rats ass about looks and the Mac OS. Would rather save $1000 and buy a Windows Laptop which has the exact same stats.
I do however have an iPhone and iPad so don't go all 'you Apple hater' on me
