Title: Commerce - Melb vs UNSW
Post by: kuzza on January 17, 2013, 09:28:29 pm
Hey guys I have offers from

Melbourne UNI - Commerce

UNSW - Double degree  (Commerce +   Science/economics/media/arts)

I just want to seek some opinion from you guys to see which is better. Apparently UNSW's Australian school of business is the best in Australia?

Personally it does not matter to me if I go to UNSW or Melb. All I care about is the quality of education and also the "prestigiousness". Thanks!

Definitely UNSW.  Not only is it the best business school, it also has a very business-interested population of students, and so it will be fantastic grounds for networking etc. (which is obviously really important in business).  Double degree also looks more attractive on your resume perhaps.

It depends on what you want to specialise in. UoM has one of the best finance faculties in Australia (and in the world), especially if you're looking at postgrad (masters/phd) overseas, UoM has a set of well-connected professors with top uni's in America and England, so if you are looking far into the future, you should definitely consider UoM (if finance). Furthermore, the quality is essentially the same in undergraduate, sure there may be a bit of difference here and there but essentially all commerce undergraduate subjects do not tend to differ by much. If you are looking at postgrad however, I know that UNSW has one of the top mathematical economics faculties in Aus, otherwise stick with UoM for finance. If you are looking at financial econometrics (or applied finance), you should consider Monash (not sure if you got an offer from them but if you can get into UoM Comm you should be able to get into Monash Comm).

If you are intending to specialise in finance/economics etc, definitely do a science double degree as that will boost you analytical skills which is invaluable for finance/economics.

Thanks very much for the opinions.

I am actually intending to do Management and marketing... What are all of your views about it.

If I were to go UNSW, I will do media and commerce. or economics and commerce.

Thanks

I hear UNSW is particularly good at economics - that's the vibe I get, at least.

I see both sides of the argument. A big thanks to everyone that contributed!

But alot of people argue that melbourne university is ranked higher than UNSW!

"Quality of education" and "prestigiousness" probably have little in common. You might actually find that certain universities offer a very good quality of education even though they are not as prestigious as other universities (RMIT engineering comes to mind here).

And even beyond that quality of education is something which is very tangible and hard to define - it might depend on luck (i.e. who you get as your lecturers/tutors) as well as if they suit what you think is good. Like to me, because I'm lazy, a good tutor is someone who won't make me do stuff in class :P get what I mean?

To be honest, you probably won't go wrong with either UoM or UNSW, I'd say take onboard TT's advice regarding the different faculties but at the end of the day, it doesn't matter, they're both good unis, have a think about where you'd enjoy yourself more :P
