Title: Year 12 this year
Post by: Romaboy on January 23, 2013, 05:45:35 pm
Hey guys,
So I'm going into year 12 this year and not really that confident. I really want to get an above 90 ATAR and I know I can do it it's just I'm really uneasy about chemistry. I don't know why I continued it because I sucked in units 1/2. I will do the holiday homework for it before school starts as I haven't done it yet, though do you think I should neglect it and just have it in my bottom two? or actually put a lot of work into it and try and get a 30+ at least?
Is it hard to get raw 30? what marks would you need?
Thanks guys :)

By the way, good luck to everyone else who is doing year 12 this year :D

Always work hard at everything, never get into the habit of neglecting any part of any subject; it just manifests itself later on.

I pulled a 30 raw in chem (scaled to 34), but I know I could've done better but for the fact that I was incredibly lazy all of year 12. If you put effort into it, I'm certain you can get 40+ raw :)

I definitely wouldn't neglect any of your subjects. It is always possible to work hard and achieve amazing results, all it requires is a focused mind and a good attitude :) You can do it!

Okay, I'm going to put a lot of effort though I didn't put much effort in 1/2, is that going to be detrimental to my grades in 3/4?  :-\

Nope! Your 1/2 grades have absolutely no relevance to the 3/4 course. Just study hard and you'll be fine.

If you really don't like chem and think you wont do so well, why dont you try to change subjects.
I know my school still let us change up to the second or third week into school.
If i was you I would call the school and see if changing subjects is possible.

If you know you hate the subject now, I'm telling you you are not going to have any motivation to do any work in it. This is what happened to me with methods. I hated it, didnt do well in 1/2 but for some reason I continued on. Worst decision ever, I did work for it at all for the whole year and regretted not doing either history or politics which I know I could hve done a better job at.

Hmm, can you clarify that you actually don't like the subject at all, or is it just that you struggled a bit in Year 11. If it's the latter than that's something that you can turn around this year with a bit of hard work and dedication. What you need to know in 3/4 is taught in 3/4 and for the small bits of knowledge here and there you'll end up learning that as you go along (and might be recovered a bit in the textbook, by your teacher etc. too - e.g. for volumetric analysis stuff early on, that was covered in 1/2 but to do the 3/4 stuff the book ends up going over the 1/2 stuff again anyway).

I agree with michak! Yes, people will encourage you to continue with chem, and it's your choice in the end. I read your post and it seriously reminded me of him haha! I was having the same dilemma, and still, I pushed aside the fact that I'll struggle this year and continued on.. Even after I finished orientation! But still, I knew I'd just hate it more and eventually neglect it because I just didn't like it! So I changed it to a subject I liked over the holidays and I feel much more relieved  :) . Why don't you talk to your school and change to something you know you'll enjoy?? Most schools still allow for it in the first few weeks of year 12, so maybe email the person in charge of subject changes  before school starts and see what happens! Good luck  :D

hey,

look im basically at the same stage as you. in year 11 last year i gave absolutely no craps about my grades in chem as long as i passed as i was doing 4 unit 3&4's last year. however, although its going to be just a little tougher depending on the book you are using (hinemann assumes you did 1&2 a lot), it is definitely do-able. ive already done the whole 3&4 course and i can tell you just a little bit of hard work can give you excellent results. HINT:in chem you have to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

Don't mean to be a sceptic...but the WHOLE 3/4 course? Whoah.
