hi I'm in year 11 this year and I'm doing Art Unit 1/2.
Last year my art teacher gave us homework to complete over the holidays and one of it was to complete criteria one of the folio component. She told us to choose a theme, by theme does she mean painting/drawing/photography/fashion/costume design or does she mean a topic like media/politics/animals...

I did studio art but the terminology is similar:
Theme usually refers to the ideas and messages in your art. It is what the subject matter (animals, nature, people...) is conveying. Theme is often intangible, like emotion or ideas, whereas subject is the object or creature in the art.
Painting/drawing/photography are all techniques, not themes.
So for example, you could draw (technique) a tiger (subject) expressing anger (theme).
