hi,
I wanted to know if a biomed student does the bioengineering major, is biomedical engineering the only engineering masters he/she can choose or are there other engineering masters available also?

thank you for your reply. What I wanted to ask was if a person completes the bachelor of biomedicine with a major in bioengineering, if he/she wants to continue with a masters of engineering, is the biomedical masters of engineering his/her only option or are there other masters in engineering which he/she can still take up? thanks in advance.

you can do other engineering such as chemical, mechanical, civil etc, but for 3 years instead of 2 years, provided you fulfil the pre-requisites. just make sure you do at least linear algebra and calculus 2, to qualify for any engineering

Still need to do Physics 1 and 2 to get into Mech or Elec Eng and for Civil, you have to do 25 points of first year science. You can't do 25 points of Physics in biomedicine at first year, so basically BioEng is your only choice.

No, but isn't biology and gene/environments in biomed considered a science? You could do physics through your selective subjects in second year or through breadth in third year. Basically you just have to choose the bioengineering stream at first year, to do any kind of engineering. As for chemical engineering, you already do chemistry for biomed (12.5 units) so you need to do another chem subject to qualify for the 3 year masters of engineering. I'm also in the same boat and done some research and asked the engineering department

Can you take 25 points of Physics in Biomed though? I see that you have to take 12.5 points of Physics in first year, but I don't see any physics subjects as part of the 'selective' classes for Biomed. BTW, you can't take science subjects as breadth in Biomed.

It's nice to know that you can do Chem Eng through Biomed, albeit Science would be a better choice due to starting it properly in 2nd year, not 4-6 year.

what engineering were you thinking on doing?

maybe chemical or biomolecular engineering. Is it still possible to do them?

According to the student advisor and the advice I had from the Engineering department, it is definitely possible. Chemistry for Biomedicine is combination of Chem 1 and Chem 2, but is it still considered only a single subject. So you need another chemistry subject in second year, to satisfy the pre-requisities for the Master of Engineering (chemical or biomolecular). Just popped an email to the engineering department just to make sure this is possible. Yeah, I'm also going to major in bioengineering in first year, to fulfil engineering subjects.

If you didn't want to continue with bioengineering, you could always switch back to the mainstream biomedicine degree in second year, without any disadvantage. So you can still major in a health science instead of doing bioengineering. Plus, this leaves you with the option of engineering after your biomedicine degree. I assume you want to do a health science such as medicine, dentistry, physio?

What are the exact prerequisites for specific Engineering masters? Is it like if a person wants to do a chemical engineering masters he/she will have to do three chemistry subjects in their bachelors degree?

For the 3 year Master of Engineering (Chemical) and Master of Engineering (Biomolecular) requires
Any Undergraduate Degree
•An undergraduate degree including:
◦the equivalent of 25 points (2 subjects) of first year mathematics, specifically Calculus 2 and Linear Algebra (or equivalent), and
◦the equivalent of 25 points (2 subjects) of first year chemistry (or equivalent).
•An average of 65% in the final two years.
