So I'm not quite sure what stationery and exercise books to get. Can I please get some suggestions? Thanks! (So lost ATM) :S

You don't need to get anything in advance. Wait until you see what classes are like before you decide whether loose leaf paper or textbooks, binders or folders, pens or pencils suit you better.
I at least found for my lower level subjects that printing off the lecture notes and annotating the slides by hand was all that I needed in class.

Just like mark said - just for the first day print the lecture notes and have a writing book with you and from then you can sort yourself to see what best suits you. Its all up to you.
For the tutes though you might have a premade book you need to buy from the book store for chemistry and biology (this is from me doing science not sure if it's the same for biomed) - which basically has questions that you go through in the tutes.

White-out to correct spelling mistakes such as the one in the title.

Are we given a student diary?

I find A5 notebooks ideal for tutorials (as they're small and easy to carry around :P) and for lectures I guess you don't need much because you'd just annotate the lecture notes :) In terms of actual stationery, I'd say just have a few pens on hand and a highlighter - if you're anything like me, you'll probably be excavating through your bag in the first few days looking for those as well :P haha on my first day I remember bringing an A4 5 subject notebook (like what I had for year 12 subjects) but eventually I got rid of it because it was bulky and not really necessary because most of the time, you don't write an awful lot in tutes anyway :)

We got them last year but apparently due to Unimelb's concerns about the environment and paper use, they're not actually printing out/binding any diaries this year! You're not missing out on much though so dw! The only good I got out of it was the map from the back of it which helped me in my first few days haha don't even know where my diary is now!

Probably something like:
- Some coloured pens (definitely helped me out for the rote learning component of my studies)
- Four lever-arch binders e.g http://www.geca.org.au/media/uploads/product/images/01_-_ecoboard_earth_tone.jpg
Setting out my folders (e.g. putting in all the plastic pockets, loose-leaf, dividers) and labeling by each subject them a couple days before uni definitely helped me to stay organized
- Plastic pockets, loose leaf paper
- Dividers for your folders (e.g seperate lecture notes, assignments, tutorials)
- Sticky tabs
- Decent diary
- Binder books

Still got the online maps :)

I got organised for uni for the first time in my studies, ever.
For first semester, I was doing Chem, Bio, Calculus, and Russian, so I decided that I wouldn't really be using a laptop much at uni because my subjects looked like I'd need to be doing a lot of writing.
I got 4 exercise books that I was sure could fit into binders and an array of display pockets just for loose handouts that are sometimes given in tutorials (i.e. Calculus assignments).
For semester two I treated myself to a netbook and didn't regret a moment of it - I used it religiously for Biology and Russian, however not so much for Physics and Chemistry (these lectures require formula note-taking and diagrams which aren't easy to do on a laptop). I still bought the same four books and more display folders and it worked brilliantly for me. Never lost a thing, everything was organised.
Get yourself a nice bag too. I received a big Crumpler brand bag from a friend, and it was really nice to carry my stuff around in.
Basically just figure out two things - decide whether or not you need a laptop for your subjects (are you going to be taking lots of written notes in your lectures that could be better organised with technology? If so, a laptop is the way to go) and otherwise figure out if you'll be doing lots of exercises (get a book to keep it nice) or lots of scribbling (loose leaf is your friend) or a combination of both.

are the lecture notes given to you as you walk in the lecture or is there somewhere that you have to go to print them off before the lecturee?
-
A pen (4-pen if you want to be a little bit colourful) and a notepad. That's it. Half the time I forget to even bring that.
Note: I am not a model uni student.

I'd assume that in all unis these days the lecture notes would be online :)

It also depends on your subjects. There is a lot more theory and conceptual thinking in other subjects than those in science. Science subjects tend to have some kind of working out. Have paper and pen ready especially for mathematics :)
-
I've had smaller subjects where there are piles of printed lecture notes at the entrance to the lecture hall, with the slides on the left and a few solid lines for note-taking on the right. But that's unusual.
Myself, I usually carry a couple of 4-pens. And a basic scientific calculator, for when I need one. I don't have a laptop myself.

Do you get lots of handouts at lectures? just wondering whether i should settle for notebooks or folders (the most important decision of my life)

I've only ever heard of that happening in math subjects
